So it’s the 30th birthday of Channel 4, and with that comes the 30th birthday of Countdown; it’s come a long way in 30 years and let’s hope that it will continue for a long time! Nick tells us to thanks Marcel and Jeanne Stellman for bringing Countdown over the channel.

Countdown recap for Friday 2 November 2012.

Round 1: T H M R D A E I C

C1: CHARTED (7)
C2: THREAD (6)
DC: CHEDARIM (8) MATH (4)
OT: TRACHEID (8)
Score: 7–0 (max 8)

CHEDARIM is a variant spelling of HEDARIM, a word which Jo nearly got accidentally yesterday.

Round 2: R L E D S K U I H

C1: SHIRKED (7)
C2: HUSKED (6)
DC: DUSKIER (7) HURDLES (7)
OT: RUSHLIKE (8)
Score: 14–0 (max 16)

RUSHLIKE means relating to rushes (plants).

Round 3: N V N D S A E O E

C1: NOVENAS (7)
C2: vendors
DC: VANS (4)
OT: DONNEES (7) ENNEADS (7)
Score: 21–0 (max 23)

Ron sees a phantom R.

Round 4: A E A L T S H E C

C1: LATCHES (7)
C2: CHEATS (6)
DC: CHELATES (8) ESCALATE (8)
OT: ALCAHEST (8) LEACHATE (8)
Score: 28–0 (max 31)

With Philip having a 7 each round and Ron still on zero, things don’t look hopeful for Ron.
CHELATES are some sort of chemicals.
Also the DC max is 30. You know, thirty, as in the thirtieth birthday of Countdown... never mind.

Round 5: 100, 9, 3, 7, 8, 10. Target: 896.

C1: 896. 100*9-(7-3) (10)
C2: 896. 100*9-(7-3) (10)
Score: 38–10 (max 41)

I was hoping that it would be a difficult round so Philip continues his thend of getting seven points every round, but he doesn’t. Ron now has points too.

Jo, who hasn’t said a phoney word yet this show, talks about closure.

Teatime teaser: WETAREAS -> SEAWATER

Round 6: O I E I N S D P O

C1: POISED (6)
C2: misdeclared 6
DC: SPOONED (7) POISONED (8) nosepod
Score: 44–10 (max 49)

Philip goes further ahead. IONISED there as another seven.

Round 7: L S T L N A E A Y

C1: NEATLY (6)
C2: latent
DC: LASTLY (6) ANT (3)
OT: ANALYTES (8)
Score: 50–10 (max 57)

Ron sees another phantom letter – or maybe he just saw the T twice. Either way he is pushed further behind.

Round 8: E I A R P T E M W

C1: PIRATE (6)
C2: partie
DC: WARTIME (7) PRIMATE (7) ARMPIT (6) earpets
OT: EMIRATE (7) EMPTIER (7) EPIMERA (7) MEATIER (7) PEATIER (7) TEMPERA (7) WIRETAP (7)
Score: 56–10 (max 64)

PARTIE^ just isn’t a word and it pushes Ron further behind, although neither of them spotted any of the nine 7s.

Round 9: D M L C Q A E U T

C1: CALMED (6)
C2: TAMED (5)
DC: TALCUMED (8) cudmate
Score: 62–10 (max 72)

To TALCUM is a verb apparently.

Since celebrations are happening today, Susie talks about origins of celebration-ish words.

Round 10: 100, 8, 6, 8, 1, 2. Target: 611.

C1: 611. 6*100+8+1+2 (10)
C2: -
Score: 72–10 (max 82)

Easy numbers here, but still too hard for Ron.

Teatime teaser: STACKLAW -> CATWALKS

Round 11: D J R N R E A I O

C1: JOINDER (7)
C2: JOINER (6)
DC: ORDAINER (8) jodrain
Score: 79–10 (max 90)

PHILIP HAS WON!

And the game is already wrapped up by round 11.

Round 12: F B E I C Z O S R

C1: FROZE (5)
C2: SCRIBE (6)
DC: FORCES (6) COZIER (6) becoz
OT: CORBIES (7)
Score: 79–16 (max 97)

Ron actually beats Philip here!

Round 13: M S N G T E A O W

C1: MAGNETS (7)
C2: TANGOES (7)
DC: MANGOES (7) westmango
OT: MAGNETOS (8) MEGATONS (8) MONTAGES (8)
Score: 86–23 (max 105)

The classic trio of AEGMNOST returns.

Round 14: 7, 10, 1, 8, 4, 3. Target: 649.

C1: 647. (7+1)*8*10+4+3 (7)
C2: -
RR: 650. ((7+1)*8+1)*10 (7)
OT: 649. (8*7+3)*(10+1) (10)
Score: 93–23 (max 115)

Despite only being 71% difficulty, Rachel fails to solve this thing.

Round 15: T H I R T Y F U N

C2 buzzes on 11 seconds to say UNTHRIFTY which is correct.
Final Score: 93–33 (max 125)

Ron makes a final buzz for... something but Philip takes his second win, both with scores of 90+. Join Graeme on Monday for his third game.

Special mention to Cindy Ritson for being in the production crew since the show started in 1982.

Score: 93-33
Raw: 98-62
Maxes: 3-2

Also, here’s some form of chart I made about Jo’s dodgy words. Might make one every time she’s in DC.
