Countdown recap for Tuesday 16 October 2012.

It's Tuesday again and that can only mean one thing; Worsley Recap time!

C1: Champion Rose Boyle (1 win, 100 points.) A recently joined apterite and forumite, she's an accountant from Dublin, working for insurance. She made a very impressive debut yesterday, with ten maxes and a century to boot against a decent opponent.
C2: Challenger Gavin Sutton. He's worked in the banking industry for nearly 30 years now and like Rose, is also an accountant, from Welling, Kent. During that time, he worked for Italian, English and Turkish banks. He is a big fan of 80's music and his local football team Welling United.
DC: Susie Dent and Dr. Phil Hammond.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: K T G I E A P F E

C1: FEET (4)
C2: FEET (4)
DC: FAKIE (5)
OT: PATEE (5) PIETA (5)
Score: 4–4 (max 5)

A very tricky start to the day, so much that four's enough for both contestants to score. DC find one of just three fives. Let's move on.

Round 2: N T N U O V L E O

C1: TUNNEL (6)
C2: TUNNEL (6)
DC: LOVE (4) VOLUTE (6)
Score: 10–10 (max 11)

Slightly better, as both get one of the sixes, which is the max for this round.
A VOLUTE is a scroll used in architecture.

Round 3: S C P M O U E W A

C1: POEMS (5)
C2: MOUSE (5)
DC: COW (3) PEAS (4) COWPEAS (7)
OT: MUCOSAE (7)
Score: 15–15 (max 18)

More tricky letters; Rose and Gavin are stuck on five while Phil puts three and four together to make a compound seven.

Round 4: L T S I E D W N O

C1: DOWNEST (7)
C2: LISTED (6)
DC: DOWNIEST (8) TOWLINES (8)
Score: 22–15 (max 26)

A dubious offering by Rose, which I fully expected to be disallowed. However, Susie allows it on the one-syllable comparitive rule for adjectives, although it does sound daft. She gains the lead but could have had an extra point by adding the I.

Round 5: 75, 100, 50, 6, 3, 6. Target: 987.

C1: 988. Mistake in working.
C2: 984. (100 + 50) x 6 + 75 + 6 + 3 (7)
RR: 987. (100 + 50 + 6/3) x 6 + 75 (10)
Score: 22–22 (max 36)

Rose actually ends up at 888, allowing Gavin to cash in with his four away method to level the game. Rachel solves via a similar route to what Rose tried.

The doctor talks about a book titled "Good General Practice", written in 1954.

Teatime teaser: OLDWHALE -> HALLOWED

Round 6: D F R E A E C J I

C1: REFACED (7)
C2: FEARED (6)
OT: DEFACER (7)
Score: 29–22 (max 43)

Rose's "risky" seven is fine, as she retakes the lead.

Round 7: P M D A I E G T I

C1: IMAGED (6)
C2: gaited
DC: impetagi MIDGET (6)
OT: GIMPED (6) MAGPIE (6) PITIED (6) TAMPED (6)
Score: 35–22 (max 49)

Plenty of sixes in this selection but Gavin's isn't one of them, falling into the fairly common GAITED trap. Phil tries a plural od IMPETIGO which unsurprisingly is not in, not sure how he was spelling it anyway. On a personal note, this round was the highlight for me, as for once I managed to spot MAGPIE. :D

Round 8: S R A E Q B N O I

C1: BONIER (6)
C2: RABIES (6)
DC: BARONIES (8)
Score: 41–28 (max 57)

DC corner spot the darren, which beats the contestants' offerings by two.

Round 9: Y S C E A U L D R

C1: DELAYS (6)
C2: scaulder
DC: CRUDELY (7) CURSEDLY (8)
OT: SACREDLY (8)
Score: 47–28 (max 65)

Gavin's risk backfires, causing him to fall further behind. There are a couple of -LY words lurking for eight, one which is found by the corner.

OoW: Susie mentions the origins of the words PYTHON, OSTRICH and CANARY.

Round 10: 25, 6, 4, 7, 9, 4. Target: 749.

C1: 750. 7 x 4 x 25 + (9 x 6) - 4 (7)
C2: -
RR: 749. ((9 + 4) x 6 + 4 + 25) x 7 (10)
Score: 54–28 (max 75)

Rose stretches her lead even further with her one away solution, with Gavin failing to get close. Rachel's clearly been practising her 107 times tables.

Teatime teaser: ROASTNOT -> NOTATORS

Alright, own up, who wrote this teaser (see clue above)? :D :) :P

Round 11: S G H R E O A D X

C1: hoardes
C2: SHARED (6)
DC: HOAXERS (7)
OT: GHERAOS (7) OXHERDS (7)
Score: 54–34 (max 82)

Rose unnecessarily adds an E to her HOARDS, which closes the gap to 20.
A GHERAO is an Indian protest where employees prevent their employers from leaving a place until their demands are met.

Round 12: T R S E A I T C E

C1: TREATIES (8)
C2: RACIEST (7)
DC: SCATTIER (8)
OT: CATTERIES (18) CERATITES (18)
Score: 62–34 (max 100)

She makes up for it though with a good eight, although shockingly no one spots either nine!
A CERATITE is an ammonoid fossil chiefly in Permian and Triassic periods.

Round 13: F S T I E O N R O

C1: FORTIES (7)
C2: REFITS (6)
DC: FESTOON (7) STONIER (7)
OT: SNOOTIER (8)
Score: 69–34 (max 108)

Another missed maximum by the studio but more importantly Rose wraps up the game with her seven.

Round 14: 100, 9, 8, 10, 2, 4. Target: 330.

C1: 330. 4 x 100 - ((9 - 2) x 10) (10)
C2: 330. 4 x 100 - ((9 - 2) x 10) (10)
Score: 79–44 (max 118)

Ten reasonably simple points for both on the final numbers game.

Round 15: T O T U E S D A Y

C1 buzzes on 2.75 seconds to say OUTSTAYED which is correct.
Final Score: 89–44 (max 128)

Rose solves the conundrum again, this time needing just under three seconds to do it. Not quite as convincing as yesterday but good stuff nonetheless from the forumite, who ran out comfortable winner int he end. Join Robbo tomorrow to discover whether Rose can make it a hattrick of wins. See you next week for what could be Rose's seventh game.
