Round 1: P R N G I U A I L

C1: PAIRING (7)
C2: PAIRING (7)
OT: LAIRING (7) NAUPLII (7) PURLING (7) RAILING (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

Nice flat start, appropriately PAIRED with PAIRING. :P

In most crustaceans, a NAUPLIUS (plural NAUPLII) is a larval form with three pairs of appendages and a single median eye, occurring usually as the first stage of development after leaving the egg.
To PURL is to knit with a reverse stitch.

Round 2: B R A S E L D O E

C1: RELOADS (7)
C2: LEADERS (7)
DC: braseed EARLOBES (8)
OT: LEEBOARDS (18)
Score: 14–14 (max 25)

A super impressive 9 (which I always seem to miss (no exception today :P  )) is missed by all, but while Jo shows off her braseed, Susie shows off her impressive EARLOBES. :P

A LEEBOARD is either of two broad, flat objects attached to the sides of a sailing ship amidships, the one on the lee side being lowered into the water to prevent the ship from making leeway.

Round 3: L S N J E A I H X

C1: INHALES (7)
C2: JEANS (5)
Score: 21–14 (max 32)

A sharp gasp of air and Paul's darren takes him into the lead.

Round 4: T G E C I Y E T F

C1: CITY (4)
C2: fitty
DC: cigyteet
OT: FYTTE (5)
Score: 25–14 (max 37)

A very nasty round, unless you're called Jo Brand of course. :P But, Tom is unfortunate as fitty is apparently a local dialect work where he comes from. :(

FYTTE means qualified or competent, as for an office or function.

Round 5: 100, 75, 25, 50, 1, 8. Target: 491.

C1: 496. (8 x 50) + 100 - ((75 / 25) + 1) (7)
C2: 496. (8 x 50) + 100 - ((75 / 25) + 1) (7)
RR: 491. (((75 + 50) / 25) x 100) - 8 - 1 (10)
Score: 32–21 (max 47)

Back to 4 large for Paul, but he misses the method that uses the 2 smalls to full effect. Well, Tom does too, so no harm done.

Jo talks about problematic words, such as "quintastic", a term for 50-year-olds, who are still in peak condition.

Teatime teaser: REDTREES -> DESERTER

Round 6: D N O P U S E C N

C1: POUNCED (7)
C2: enpounds
OT: POUNCES (7) UNPOSED (7)
Score: 39–21 (max 54)

Oh dear, a bit of an unnecessary risk by Tom. Well, unless he didn't have either of the 7's, I guess..........

Round 7: V R B D I A O A S

C1: BRAVADO (7)
C2: DIVAS (5)
DC: BAVAROIS (8)
Score: 46–21 (max 62)

An impressive BRAVADO by Paul, which even DC didn't get. And another thing they didn't get was the darren, which was go by "he who lives upstairs". :P

Round 8: M L E R A N U S M

C1: NUMERALS (8)
C2: MANURES (7)
DC: unmeals
OT: MENSURAL (8)
Score: 54–21 (max 70)

Paul's letters and numbers both add up and that's another good 8 points for him. :D

MENSURAL is an adjective meaning pertaining to measure.

Round 9: R N R T A I U A E

C1: NARRATE (7)
C2: TRAINER (7)
DC: raturine
OT: RETRAIN (7) RUNTIER (7) TAURINE (7) TERRAIN (7) URINATE (7)
Score: 61–28 (max 77)

Plenty of 7's around, although Jo likes to follow yesterday's caturine with raturine!! :P

TAURINE is an adjective meaning of, pertaining to, or resembling a bull.

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of words derived from "Franks", the original settlers in France, such as "franchise" and "franking".

Round 10: 100, 75, 5, 6, 1, 8. Target: 972.

C1: 974. ((8 + 1) x 100) + 75 - (6 - 5) (7)
C2: 974. ((8 + 5) x 75) - 1 (7)
RR: 972. (75 + 6) x (8 + 5 - 1) (10)
Score: 68–35 (max 87)

Another stinky one if you can't see the trick.

Teatime teaser: PASSPORT -> POPSTARS WOAH!!! WOAH!!! POPSTARS (or even POPSTAR isn't in the dictionary.)

Round 11: P D W T E O E O S

C1: STOOPED (7)
C2: POSTED (6)
DC: wedspot
OT: SWOOPED (7)
Score: 75–35 (max 94)

Paul's lead is now extended to a double score. Surely, his half-octochampdom is all but guaranteed now. :)

Round 12: K L E N O G A S M

C1: MANGLES (7)
C2: SLOGAN (6)
DC: monkgas
OT: KALONGS (7) MANGELS (7) MANGOES (7)
Score: 82–35 (max 101)

And indeed it is thanks to his MANGLES and not Jo's monkgas. :P

A KALONG is a large flying fox of Southeast Asia.
A MANGEL (or MANGELWURZEL) is a variety of the beet Beta vulgaris, cultivated as food for livestock.

Round 13: R P S D E I E A F

C1: PRAISED (7)
C2: PRAISED (7)
DC: FREESIA (7)
Me: AIRSPEED (8) 8-)
Score: 89–42 (max 109)

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, the AIRSPEED I've achieved in this round gives me the top marks. Paul also has the chance of bettering his high score of 106 too. 8-)

Round 14: 50, 75, 10, 6, 1, 3. Target: 928.

C1: 922.
C2: 926. ((10 + 3) x 75) - 50 + 1 (7)
RR: 928. ((50 + 1) x 6 x 3) + 10 (10)
Score: 89–49 (max 119)

Oh dear, not only can Paul not get his top score, but he can't even get a century now :!:  But full marks (literally) to Rachel for a clean sweep of today's numbers games. 8-)

Round 15: C A T S G O A P E

C1 buzzes on 9.25 seconds to say SCAPEGOAT which is correct.
Final Score: 99–49 (max 129)

But, he's still got a flawless conundrum record. 4 out of 4 and 410 points is pretty snappy, I must say. I so hope that Paul can keep it up for another 4 shows to be the first octochamp of the series. :D

Join me tomorrow to see if he can make it 5 of a kind.

So, till then, bye bye for now. ;) :) :D  8-)
