Countdown recap for Tuesday 12 June 2012.

Again, apologies for the slowness of recaps at the moment, things should be back to normal very soon.
This is the recap for Jonathan's second show.

C1: Champion Jonathan 'the kid' Rawlinson (1 win, 110 points) - an Apterite/gap year student from Sheffield. Going to study Applied Maths at Cambridge next year, and plays the piano and violin. His mum, Coral, is arguably more famous than him.
C2: Challenger Robin Gardner - from West Bridgford (not Bridgport, Nick!) in Nottingham. He's retired and previously worked with young offenders.
DC: Susie Dent and Saira Khan.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Nick talks about losing weight for the summer. Rachel explains that her enormous cat is now on a diet!
Enjoy the show.

Round 1: E R O T E Z O P I

C1: POETIZE (7)
C2: TROPE (5)
OT: ZOETROPE (8)
Score: 7–0 (max 8)

It looks like Jonathan is going to stick with the 5-vowel formula which worked yesterday, and it's carried on nicely here.
It's strangely not the darren though - a ZOETROPE, in simple terms, is one of those old toys that you can spin round and the pictures inside look like they're moving :D

Round 2: V S U N A M E S D

C1: MEDUSAS (7)
C2: MADNESS (7)
DC: UNSAVED (7) SUNDAES (7)
OT: ASSUMED (7) DESMANS (7)
Score: 14–7 (max 15)

Flat 7's - Robin's off the mark.
DESMANS (or should that be DESMEN?) are small semiaquatic European mammals, related to the mole.

Round 3: I T E M U G E I L

C1: LEGUME (6)
C2: GUILE (5)
DC: GIMLET (6)
OT: GLUTEI (6) MIELIE (6) MILIEU (6)
Score: 20–7 (max 21)

Jonathan stretches his lead with a French vegetable :)
A GIMLET can be a gin-based cocktail or a T-shaped tool used to bore holes.

Round 4: R W A C E I M X R

C1: WARMER (6)
C2: RACIER (6)
DC: WAXIER (6)
OT: AIRCREW (7)
Score: 26–13 (max 28)

Sixes all around, but there is a darrenic 7 lurking.

Round 5: 50, 8, 5, 1, 9, 7. Target: 540.

C1: 540. ((7-5)+8+50)*9 (10)
C2: 540. (9+1)*50+8*5 (10)
Score: 36–23 (max 38)

Teatime teaser: TOYFRUIT -> FORTUITY

Round 6: C P O S I E N H O

C1: PHONIES (7)
C2: - (declared 8)
DC: COHESION (8)
Score: 43–23 (max 46)

Robin blobs by misdeclaring an 8, so Jonathan is now afforded some breathing space. Nice spot from DC.

Round 7: A D E V U S E P S

C1: EVADES (6)
C2: PAUSED (6)
DC: SUAVE (5)
OT: PASSED (6) PAUSES (6) PSEUDS (6) SPADES (6) SPEEDS (6) UPASES (6)
Score: 49–29 (max 52)

Flattttt.
UPASES are tropical Asian trees, of which the sap has been used for arrow poison (and other purposes).

Round 8: B L I T A J N E G

C1: BELTING (7)
C2: BLEATING (8)
DC: TANGIBLE (8)
Score: 49–37 (max 60)

Oooo :o A surprising miss there from JR and may that have given Robin a glimmer of hope?

Round 9: A R O B I T W E G

C1: BORGATE (7)
C2: BORATE (6)
Score: 56–37 (max 67)

Robin can't capitalise though and the gaps opened once again.

Susie talk about the rhyme 'Yankee Doodle Dandy'.

Round 10: 25, 6, 9, 7, 1, 8. Target: 352.

C1: 352. (25*7+1)*(8-6) (10)
C2: 352. (6+8)*25+9-7 (10)
Score: 66–47 (max 77)

Good solves from both!

Teatime teaser: GILLREAD -> GRILLADE

Round 11: A Q E S A Y U N A

C1: QUEANS (6)
C2: QUEASY (6)
DC: UNEASY (6)
OT: NAUSEA (6)
Score: 72–53 (max 83)

A very dodgy set of letters, but a few straightforward sixes were available.

Round 12: L T E I C H U A D

C1: ETHICAL (7)
C2: hatched
DC: DIALECT (7)
OT: ALETHIC (7) CITADEL (7) DELTAIC (7) DUCTILE (7) DUTCHIE (7) LATCHED (7)
Score: 79–53 (max 90)

Ah, Robin's seen 2 H's and now needs to beat Jonathan in the next round. :?

Round 13: O K I N E S O P R

C1: SPOOKIER (8)
C2: SPOOKIER (8)
DC: POISONER (8)
OT: ROOINEKS (8) SPOONIER (8)
Score: 87–61 (max 98)

He can't, so The Kid fights to live another day :D
A ROOINEK is an informal South African term for an English person (derived from Afrikaans)

Round 14: 100, 5, 2, 3, 9, 4. Target: 252.

C1: 252. (5*100+4)/2 (10)
C2: 252. (5*100)/2+9-(4+3) (10)
Score: 97–71 (max 108)

To quote James: :o :) 8-) :geek: :D !!!
A rare enough outing of full marks on numbers from both players today!

Round 15: L A W N S P R I G

C1 buzzes on 1 second to say SPRAWLING which is correct.
Final Score: 107–71 (max 118)

Another lightning conundrum spot from Jonathan, and century no. 2 to boot. Well done that man!

Raw score: 114-86
Maxes: 11-8 8-)
