Round 1: R C O T G S E U E

C1: GROUTS (6)
C2: groats
DC: TROGS (5) GESTURE (7)
Me: CORTEGES (8) 8-)
Score: 6–0 (max 8)

Oh dear, not a good start by Colin, as he sees a phantom A in the mix. But, I come up trumps with the darrenic 8. :D

Round 2: R L I O T V D A E

C1: TRAILED (7)
C2: TRAVEL (6)
DC: VIOLATED (8) DEVIATOR (8)
OT: DOVETAIL (8) IDOLATER (8) OVERLAID (8) TAILORED (8)
Score: 13–0 (max 16)

Loadsa loadsa 8's, but Ben's 7 is enough to extend his lead.

Round 3: N S G O E D S A P

C1: SPONGES (7)
C2: pagodas
DC: DOGNAPS (7)
OT: DAPSONE (7) DOSAGES (7) SPONGED (7)
Score: 20–0 (max 23)

Oh dear, what is it with Colin and phantom A's :?: :?

Round 4: H I W N A L F O E

C1: FINALE (6)
C2: FINALE (6)
DC: INWALE (6)
OT: AWHILE (6) INFLOW (6) INHALE (6) OLEFIN (6) WAHINE (6)
Score: 26–6 (max 29)

A nice flat round, getting Colin off the mark too.

An OLEFIN is any member of the alkene series.

Round 5: 50, 75, 25, 3, 5, 4. Target: 887.

C1: -
C2: 897. ((75 + 25) x (5 + 4)) - 3 (5)
RR: 887. (((75 x 4) - 5) x 3) + (50 / 25) (10)
Score: 26–11 (max 39)

A stinky 3 large numbers game appears, with Ben all at sea, Colin just clinging on to 5 precious points and Rachel making light work of it. :D

Alastair talks about his love of animals and politics, and talks about Winston Churchill.

Teatime teaser: RUDETEEN -> NEUTERED

Round 6: R D L T I U A I N

C1: RITUAL (6)
C2: TRAIN (5)
DC: UNITARD (7)
OT: DIURNAL (7) NAUTILI (7)
Score: 32–11 (max 46)

Colin's numbers points are immediately nullified by Ben's RITUAL, as DC ponder over a UNITARD. :P

A NAUTILUS (plural NAUTILI) is any cephalopod of the genus Nautilus, having a spiral, chambered shell with pearly septa.

Round 7: S K M R O I A U E

C1: SMOKIER (7)
C2: SMOKIER (7)
DC: SMIRK (5) MUSKIER (7)
OT: IRKSOME (7) MOUSIER (7) RAMKIES (7)
Score: 39–18 (max 53)

Plenty of 7's again, although everyone seems to be pretty SMOKIER and MUSKIER around here. :P

Round 8: O I T N J D E S D

C1: JOINTED (7)
C2: JOINTED (7)
DC: TODDIES (7)
OT: DISTEND (7) JOISTED (7) NODDIES (7)
Score: 46–25 (max 60)

Yet more flatness.

Round 9: E O I S G F T U L

C1: FOULEST (7)
C2: fluges
DC: LUGE (4) OUTFLIES (8)
OT: EULOGIST (8) FUGLIEST (8) SOLIFUGE (8)
Score: 53–25 (max 68)

A few 8's here, but Ben's 7 extends his lead even further now.

FUGLIEST is an adjective meaning the most extremely unattractive.

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "lascivious", "leud" and "luxury".

Round 10: 100, 2, 7, 6, 4, 10. Target: 824.

C1: 820.
C2: 823. (4 x 2 x 100) + 10 + 7 + 6 (7)
RR: 824. (10 - 7 + 100) x 2 x 4 (10)
Score: 53–32 (max 78)

More numbers points for Colin here, as he is just about hanging on in there.

Teatime teaser: SENDITEM -> SEDIMENT

Round 11: E R B S A E R Z A

C1: brazers
C2: ZEBRAS (6)
DC: BEARERS (7)
OT: ZAREBAS (7)
Score: 53–38 (max 85)

Ben is an I short of a very good word, but Colin's ZEBRAS have got him clawing back to within just 15 points of Ben.

Round 12: T N M E U P A M I

C1: PITMAN (6)
C2: UPTIME (6)
DC: PUTAMEN (7)
OT: MANUMIT (7) PETUNIA (7) PINETUM (7)
Score: 59–44 (max 92)

Well, with DOWNTIME now in the dictionary, it's only right that UPTIME should be in too. :) A few nice 7's available in the mix too.

MANUMIT is a verb meaning to release from slavery or servitude.

Round 13: B P R C E A O G E

C1: misdeclared 7
C2: probage
DC: PROBE (5) OPERA (5) BORAGE (6) APOGEE (6)
OT: AEROBE (6) BAREGE (6) BARGEE (6) BOCAGE (6) PEROBA (6)
Score: 59–44 (max 98)

Oh dear, Ben realises that he has messed his 7 by using a letter twice, but Colin can't capitalise as his 7 isn't in either.

An AEROBE is an organism, especially a bacterium, that requires air or free oxygen for life, as opposed to an anaerobe.
A BAREGE is a sheer fabric constructed in a leno weave of silk warp and cotton or worsted filling, often used to make veils and dresses.
A BOCAGE is a decorative motif of trees, branches, or foliage, as in a tapestry or a ceramic figure group.

Round 14: 50, 2, 3, 8, 4, 1. Target: 773.

C1: -
C2: -
RR: 773. (((50 x 2) - 3) x 8) - (4 - 1) (10)
Score: 59–44 (max 108)

Colin's chances of winning have now evaporated, as both he and Ben are too far away with their efforts, or should that be "lack" of efforts, as they both declared zero...... :?

Round 15: C O D R I V I N G

No one buzzes. The answer was DIVORCING.
Final Score: 59–44 (max 118)

Well, the buzzers seem to be having a nice long break this week, as neither of them have been pressed still after 4 days :!:  :o

So, Ben has won ANOTHER game with just 59 POINTS!!!! Crikey blimey...........  But, he has got 3 wins, and is still in with a shout of making the finals, but will need to win at least 3 more games to definitely guarantee that place.

But with Jonathan Rawlinson entering the fray on Monday, I'd say that the chances of that happening are very slim, but maybe that's just me.

I'll be back next Wednesday for the next installment of what could be a very interesting finish to this series.......... 8-)

So, till next week, take care of yourselves, you be sure of it. ;) :) :D
