Countdown recap for Thursday 31 May 2012.

Welcome to the final part of the Worsley Recap trilogy for the week. 8-)

Apparently you can tell an awful lot about a person just by looking at their handwriting. Mine's awful so I hope this isn't true.

C1: Champion Suzi Purcell (5 wins, 440 points.) A talented artist who works in a shop. She's had a pretty solid run so far, although she was a bit off form yesterday. Her conundrum records stands at a proud five out of five, can she keep it up?
C2: Challenger Paul Magson. From Hull, he works as a financial consultant in the dental industry, meaning that he gives out financial advice to dentists.
DC: Susie Dent and John Culshaw.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: S U L T I H D E O
R02: T R T E O B S X A

R04: Y D N O I A R D V
R05: 75, 25, 6, 2, 9, 10. Target: 270.
TTT: SELLPOST - "Having no allotment, rather like a bad movie"
R06: N R H E I S K A Q
R07: C O R S A D C I R
R08: S T R A O G M E A
R09: T O L S A B Z U O
R10: 75, 4, 6, 6, 2, 8. Target: 978.
TTT: HAPPIEST - "Not the happiest of times if you're reading these"
R11: N E D W I R T U A
R12: F T G N E A E T A
R13: V U N M A R N E A
R14: 50, 4, 1, 9, 6, 2. Target: 803.
R15: R A N O N A C I D (conundrum)

And now a brief interlude before our main feature:

Round 1: S U L T I H D E O

C1: HOISTED (7)
C2: holted
DC: HIDEOUTS (8)
OT: SOLITUDE (8)
Score: 7–0 (max 8)

Suzi strikes the first blow, with the other Susie going one better.

Round 2: T R T E O B S X A

C1: ROTATES (7)
C2: BOXERS (6)
DC: TOASTER (7) BOASTER (7) EXTORTS (7) ABETTORS (8)
Score: 14–0 (max 16)

She doubles her lead as Paul can't find any of the many sevens, while DC go darrenic with ABETTORS.

Round 3: D I N P E S M E I

C1: SPINED (6)
C2: MINED (5)
DC: IMPENDS (7)
OT: DEMINES (7) IMPEDES (7) SIDEMEN (7)
Score: 20–0 (max 23)

Suzi's not sure about SPINED but it's in as an adjective. Paul still can't score though, while DC find one of the sevens.

Round 4: Y D N O I A R D V

C1: ORDAIN (6)
C2: vinyard
DC: ANDROID (7)
Score: 26–0 (max 30)

Paul was probably watching Tuesday's show too closely (when Suzi got VINEYARD and had an S left over). You can't have it without the E so he'll have to stay on zero for a little longer. John does an impression of an ANDROID, which happens to be the darren for this round.

Round 5: 75, 25, 6, 2, 9, 10. Target: 270.

C1: 270. (25 + 2) x 10 (10)
C2: 270. (25 + 2) x 10 (10)
Score: 36–10 (max 40)

A very easy first numbers game, as Paul gets off the mark.

John Culshaw performs an amusing act on what Lord Sugar's version of Countdown would be like, using the left half of the clock. The conundrum board turns over to reveal GRRSALOUD, to the Apprentice theme tune, with the clock hand going backwards on the left side. After the 30 seconds are up, the board flips over to reveal LORDSUGAR. Ten bonus points to anyone who solved that.

Teatime teaser: SELLPOST -> PLOTLESS

Round 6: N R H E I S K A Q

C1: rakeish
C2: SHAKER (6)
DC: SHINER (6) HANKIES (7) HANKERS (7) HARKENS (7)
OT: HERNIAS (7) NEARISH (7) SHAKIER (7) SNAKIER (7)
Score: 36–16 (max 47)

A bad gamble by Suzi there, as RAKISH cannot be spelt with an E. There were plenty of legal sevens though, and Paul could have got one if he'd stuck the I in his word, but at least he has his first letters points now.

Round 7: C O R S A D C I R

C1: RADIOS (6)
C2: RAIDS (5)
DC: CORSAIR (7) ACCORDS (7)
OT: CORRIDAS (8)
Score: 42–16 (max 55)

More failure to add a letter by Paul, this time it proves very costly. No one in the studio can find the eight this time, which ends DC's chances of a max game.
A CORRIDA is a bull fight.

Round 8: S T R A O G M E A

C1: MEGASTAR (8)
C2: STAGE (5)
DC: MARGATES (8) MARGOSA (7)
OT: SAGAMORE (8)
Score: 50–16 (max 63)

A very impressive eight from Suzi as she continues to pull away from Paul.
SAGAMORE is an American Indian term for a chief.

Round 9: T O L S A B Z U O

C1: BLOATS (6)
C2: LOOTS (5)
DC: TABOOS (6)
OT: BAZOOS (6) BOULTS (6) OBLAST (6)
Score: 56–16 (max 69)

A BAZOO is a slang term in the US for a person's mouth.

Oow: Susie discusses the origin of the word SILHOUETTE.

Round 10: 75, 4, 6, 6, 2, 8. Target: 978.

C1: 977. (6/6 + 8 + 4) x 75 + 2 (7)
C2: 977. (6/6 + 8 + 4) x 75 + 2 (7)
RR: 978. (75 x 2 + 8 + 4) x 6 + 6 (10)
Score: 63–23 (max 79)

Both contestants are happy with one away but Rachel gives us yet another masterclass on the numbers.

Teatime teaser: HAPPIEST -> EPITAPHS

Round 11: N E D W I R T U A

C1: WINTER (6)
C2: widen (declared as 6)
DC: WAITER (6) INDURATE (8)
OT: URINATED (8)
Score: 69–23 (max 87)

Paul misdeclares, allowing Suzi to WIDEN the gap even further. A couple of eights about though, with DC finding one of them.

Round 12: F T G N E A E T A

C1: FATTEN (6)
C2: FATTEN (6)
DC: AGNATE (6) NEGATE (6)
OT: TENTAGE (7)
Score: 75–29 (max 94)

Win number six is now wrapped up for Suzi, while everyone misses the unusual darren.

Round 13: V U N M A R N E A

C1: MANNER (6)
C2: NEAR (4)
DC: vunmarnea
OT: ANURAN (6) MANURE (6) MAUVER (6)
Score: 81–29 (max 100)

Paul's having a frustrating day as he struggles to a four but Suzi still has a chance of her second century thanks to her six.
An ANURAN is a tailless amphibian of the order Anura.

Round 14: 50, 4, 1, 9, 6, 2. Target: 803.

C1: 804. (6 + 9 + 1) x 50 + 4 (7)
C2: 802. (6 + 9 + 1) x 50 + 2 (7)
RR: 802/804. (7)
OT: 803. (50 x 4 x (9 - 1) + 6)/2 (10)
Score: 88–36 (max 110)

Harder than it first looked, with even Rachel being foxed by this one. It is possible though, well done to anyone who got it.

Round 15: R A N O N A C I D

C1 buzzes on 22.5 seconds to say DRACONIAN which is correct.
Final Score: 98–36 (max 120)

A ridiculously hard conundrum for a heat game but Suzi is a demon on conundrums as she makes it six out of six! After seemingly losing concentration yesterday, she certainly regained her from today, even though the game was over very quickly again. Paul never really threatened to dethrone Suzi, whose place in the finals is now a mathematical certainty. Join Thomas tomorrow to see if she can make it a lucky number seven and if she can, join Graeme on Monday to find out if she can become a rare female octochamp in the 15 round era.

That's it from me for this week as the Robbo Recap will be returning on Wednesday. I just hope that a trio of recaps from me this week hasn't been too much for you all. The Worsley Recap will be returning a week on Monday and it will not just be any old recap. 11th June (make a note in your diaries) marks the hugely anticipated debut of apterite and part-time forumite Jonathan Rawlinson, who you may have seen win himself a couple of mugs by solving two conundrums from the audience this series. :) Join me then, I know you'll make sure of it, don't you dare miss it!

Cheerio for now.
