Countdown recap for Monday 14 May 2012.

Another fortnight passed since the last one, the Worsley Recap returns, the first since recording the finals. Just 38 days to go before the first quarter final airs so in the meantime, it's a case of who makes the finals. Will either of today's contestants make it? I obviously already know but I'm sure most of you don't so let's get down to the main business of the day.

This week is "Scout Community Week" apparently.

C1: Champion Craig Lingard (2 wins, 157 points.) He is a senior prison officer from Backley, and also a former professional Rugby player. He scored 142 tries for his club and as a result he has half of the stadium named after him. He has had two solid if unspectacular wins so and is aiming for a hattrick today.
C2: Challenger Luke Cottis. From Corsham in Wiltshire, he plays Aussie Rules football for Chippenham Redbacks.
DC: Susie Dent and Janet Street-Porter.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: C H E W U R A B O
R02: D T M A E U N R N
R03: K G A R O T E L O
R04: J L T D E I A I T
R05: 75, 7, 3, 1, 6, 4. Target: 721.
TTT: NELLSFAN - "Waffles on for ever about a few facecloths"
R06: S M L E A E S R A
R07: F N E T A N O B E
R08: T S T X S U E I C
R09: D M E F A T E D A
R10: 100, 25, 50, 4, 8, 5. Target: 608.
TTT: NIGELATE - "Nigel ate this when he had a pork pie"
R11: Y V U R E L A S I
R12: R A O P R G I N E
R13: Z D I H O S I P O
R14: 100, 6, 3, 4, 4, 7. Target: 538.
R15: A T R I M G E N T (conundrum)

And now a brief interlude before our main feature:

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: C H E W U R A B O

C1: CHORE (5)
C2: chewer
DC: BAROUCHE (8)
Score: 5–0 (max 8)

Luke suffers the curse of the phantom letter, allowing Craig to take an early lead. DC come flying out of the traps though with a superb eight, which Janet even knows the definition of. It's an historical horse-drawn carriage.

Round 2: D T M A E U N R N

C1: RANTED (6)
C2: TEAM (4)
DC: UNDREAMT (8)
OT: UNDERMAN (8)
Score: 11–0 (max 16)

Craig strecthes his lead as Luke is stuck with his lowly four.

Round 3: K G A R O T E L O

C1: LOOTER (6)
C2: LOOKER (6)
DC: GLOATER (7)
OT: LEGATOR (7)
Score: 17–6 (max 23)

Luke's off the mark, while Janet shows off with a word that describes her well.

Round 4: J L T D E I A I T

C1: JAILED (6)
C2: JAILED (6)
DC: JILTED (6)
OT: DETAIL (6) DILATE (6) TAILED (6) TILTED (6) TITLED (6)
Score: 23–12 (max 29)

Not surprised Craig went for that.

Round 5: 75, 7, 3, 1, 6, 4. Target: 721.

C1: 721. (75 - 3) x (6 + 4) + 1 (10)
C2: 719.
Score: 33–12 (max 39)

Craig extends his lead to 21 already by solving the numbers game that's probably easier than it looks.

Janet SP talks about how her career in journalism started, after she had ambitions to become an architect. Don't be surprises if Jordan F demands that Angela Rippon comes back in tomorrow's spoilers thread.

Teatime teaser: NELLSFAN -> FLANNELS

Round 6: S M L E A E S R A

C1: SEALERS (7)
C2: surreal
DC: MEASLES (7)
OT: AMASSER (7) ARMLESS (7) EARLESS (7) LEASERS (7) RESEALS (7) SEAMERS (7)
Score: 40–12 (max 46)

Luke is two letters short of his offering. Craig's slightly dubious sounding SEALERS turns out to be fine. Meanwhile, DC earn themselves a Word of Worsley thanks to their unpleasant offering.

Round 7: F N E T A N O B E

C1: NEATEN (6)
C2: -
DC: NEONATE (7)
Score: 46–12 (max 53)

Luke loses the plot completely (like I did in a letters round once). NEONATE makes another appearance as the darren. It refers to an infant under the age of four weeks.

Round 8: T S T X S U E I C

C1: CUTIES (6)
C2: CUTIES (6)
DC: CUTTIES (7)
OT: ICTUSES (7)
Score: 52–18 (max 60)

Six apiece but both players could have stuck the other T in their word, like DC did.
An ICTUS is a rhythmical or metrical stress, or a stroke or seizure.

Round 9: D M E F A T E D A

C1: DEFEAT (6)
C2: DEFEAT (6)
DC: DEFAMED (7)
Score: 58–24 (max 67)

He may have steadied the ship slightly, but DEFEAT looks inevitable for Luke, as DC produce another darren.

OoW: Susie talks about the origins of some new words which are on Oxford's watch list and may appear in the dictionary in the near future.

Round 10: 100, 25, 50, 4, 8, 5. Target: 608.

C1: 608. 100 x 5 + (25 x 4) + 8 (10)
C2: 609.
Score: 68–24 (max 77)

Luke's gamble backfires horribly, as Craig is running away with this game now.

Teatime teaser: NIGELATE -> GELATINE

Round 11: Y V U R E L A S I

C1: SLAVERY (7)
C2: LIVERS (6)
DC: SILVERY (7)
OT: VIRELAYS (8)
Score: 75–24 (max 85)

Another good word from the champ but a DC max game is ruined thanks to the unfound eight.
A VIRELAY is a type of French poem from the 14th Century, with only two rhymes.

Round 12: R A O P R G I N E

C1: pearing
C2: REAPING (7)
DC: ponger PONGIER (7)
OT: PARERGON (8) PROGERIA (8)
Score: 75–31 (max 93)

Craig fails to score for the first time as he gets the R and the P the wrong way around. It's too little too late for Luke though, with this game now officially out of reach for him.
A PARERGON is a piece of wood that is supplementary to or a by-product of a larger work.
PROGERIA is a rare medical condition in children characterised by symptoms suggesting old age.

Round 13: Z D I H O S I P O

C1: doosh
C2: HOOPS (5)
DC: ZOOIDS (6)
Me: OPIOIDS (7)
Score: 75–36 (max 100)

Craig seems to have switched off as again his word is disallowed. DC get a six but fail to spot the darren again.
An OPIOID is a chemical compound resembling opium in addictive properties or physiological effects.

Round 14: 100, 6, 3, 4, 4, 7. Target: 538.

C1: 539. (100 - 7) x 6 - (4 x 4 + 3) (7)
C2: 544.
RR: 538. (100 - 4 - 7) x 6 + 4 (10)
Score: 82–36 (max 110)

Craig earns himself another seven points and Rachel shows us the route to perfection.

Round 15: A T R I M G E N T

C1 buzzes on 4 seconds to say MATTERING which is correct.
Final Score: 92–36 (max 120)

A fairly quick conundrum solve completes a good day for Craig. Luke never really looked like dethroning the champion so he makes a swift return home. Join David tomorrow to find out if Craig can get the fourth win required to stand a chance of making the finals. I'll be back in another two weeks with another Worsley Recap, I'll be sure of it.

Good afternoon.
