So, it's the 22nd day of the month, the 33rd preliminary of the series and the 66th series of this brilliant show, so expect a winning score of 77, 88, 99 or 111 probably. :P

Enjoy. ;) :) :D

Countdown recap for Wednesday 22 February 2012.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: S T W T O I E O S

C1: woosiest
C2: TOOTSIES (8)
OT: SOOTIEST (8)
Score: 0–8 (max 8)

An unlucky start for our champ as you need a Z for WOOZIEST, rather than the 2 S's, but Chris won't care, as he has an early lead in this one. 8-)

Round 2: N T E I M N A F E

C1: MATINEE (7)
C2: FAMINE (6)
DC: EMINENT (7)
OT: INFANTE (7)
Score: 7–8 (max 15)

Peter comes back in instantaneously with a good 7.

Round 3: D R C N O A B E O

C1: BROCADE (7)
C2: CROONED (7)
DC: CARDOON (7)
OT: BACONER (7) BANDORE (7) BARCODE (7) BRADOON (7) BROADEN (7) CORDOBA (7) CORONAE (7) DRACONE (7) ONBOARD (7)
Score: 14–15 (max 22)

Maybe a day late, but it's pancake time. :P

A BACONER is a pig that weighs between 83 and 101kg, from which bacon is cut.
A BANDORE is an obsolete musical instrument resembling the guitar.
A BRADOON (or BRIDOON) is a snaffle when used with a curb on a full bridle.
A CORDOBA is a silver coin and monetary unit of Nicaragua, equal to 100 centavos.
A DRACONE is a large flexible cylindrical container towed by a ship, used for transporting liquids.

Round 4: H D E S C X I U C

C1: CHIDES (6)
C2: SHIED (5)
DC: DUCHIES (7)
Score: 20–15 (max 29)

Peter now takes the lead with his CHIDES, as DC go darrenic with their DUCHIES.

Round 5: 75, 4, 7, 2, 1, 2. Target: 781.

C1: 783. (((2 x 75) + 7) x (1 + 4)) - 2 (7)
C2: 788.
RR: 781. (75 - 2 - 2) x (7 + 4) (10)
Score: 27–15 (max 39)

Masters of the 11 times table will have enjoyed this round, but while Peter and Chris clearly aren't, Peter will be the happier as he at least gets 7 points from it. :)

Ann talks about her time in the Home Office when she was Minister of Prisons and visited some of the country's top prisons while a debate was going on about TV in cells.

Teatime teaser: NICENESS -> INCENSES

Round 6: E R D D I G T E M

C1: MERITED (7)
C2: MIDGET (6)
DC: EDGIER (6) RETIMED (7)
OT: DEMERIT (7) DIMETER (7)
Score: 34–15 (max 46)

Peter is MERITED with the 7 points for his 7 letter word.

A DIMETER is a verse or line of two measures or feet.

Round 7: Z R D H U E A N G

C1: UNHEARD (7)
C2: GANDER (6)
DC: HANGED (6) ZANDER (6)
OT: GAZUNDER (8)
Score: 41–15 (max 54)

The darrenic 8 might've been missed here, but Peter is heading into UNHEARD territory here......., well he got UNHEARD. :P

To GAZUNDER is to reduce an offer on a property immediately before exchanging contracts, having previously agreed a higher price with the seller.

Round 8: P M L I I T U O L

C1: ULTIMO (6)
C2: PILOT (5)
OT: LIMULI (6)
Score: 47–15 (max 60)

No stopping him now. Peter's steamrolling ahead with his 6.

A LIMULUS (plural LIMULI) is a crab of the genus Limulus; horseshoe crab.

Round 9: T V P A E V S O N

C1: NOVATES (7)
C2: PANTOS (6)
Score: 54–15 (max 67)

And a darren thrown in too. He could probably put his feet up in the 3rd part at this rate.

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "purple prose".

Round 10: 75, 100, 50, 4, 6, 3. Target: 809.

C1: 804. ((100 + 50 - 4) x 6) - 75 + 3 (7)
C2: 803.
OT: 809. (((100 - 3) x 50) + 4) / 6 (10)
Score: 61–15 (max 77)

A stinker of a 3 large is brought to the surface, but not a change in Chris' fortune, as he has had a blank 2nd part and Peter really just needs to show up in the last part to guarantee his win.

Teatime teaser: NICEDAVE -> DEVIANCE

Round 11: Q P R W A E A S S

C1: SPEARS (6)
C2: SPARES (6)
DC: WRASSE (6)
OT: SARAPES (7)
Score: 67–21 (max 84)

The darren might've been missed, but Chris finally knows how to score again.

A SARAPE (or SERAPE) is a blanketlike shawl or wrap, often of brightly coloured wool, as worn in Latin America.

Round 12: K R N O U D F I E

C1: FUNKIER (7)
C2: FUNKIER (7)
DC: FOUNDER (7) UNFIRED (7)
OT: REFOUND (7)
Score: 74–28 (max 91)

Game over now as that FUNKIER 7 found by both means Peter can't be caught.

Round 13: N R T M O E A B S

C1: BROMATES (8)
C2: ornates
DC: BARONETS (8) MONSTERA (8)
OT: STOREMAN (8)
Score: 82–28 (max 99)

Probably the obscurest of the four 8's available is picked by Peter, but he does still have a chance at getting another ton.

Round 14: 50, 100, 10, 4, 6, 1. Target: 761.

C1: 760. ((6 + 1) x 100) + 50 + 10 (7)
C2: 756.
RR: 761. ((100 - (4 x 6)) x 10) + 1 (10)
Score: 89–28 (max 109)

Or did, but only getting 7 means that he can only get a 99 now. Quite appropriate if you recall the introduction.....

Round 15: C E N D E G I F T

C1 buzzes on 1.5 seconds to say DEFECTING which is correct.
Final Score: 99–28 (max 119)

But he returns to good quickfire conundrum solving form to give himself a convincing win, which after he took the lead in round 4 never looked like it was going to be troubled.

Chris might not have been a competitive contestant, but tomorrow's contestant has plenty of Apterous pedigree, as it's Niall Seymour. Hopefully the recap tomorrow will be a scorefest. 8-)

Till then, bye bye. ;) :) :D
