Ock aye! And on this Burns' Night, can our Scotsman make it 6 wins out of 6 :?:

Let's find out. Enjoy. ;) :) :D

Countdown recap for Wednesday 25 January 2012.

C1: Champion Mark Murphy (5 wins, 400 points.) From Edinburgh. Nick hopes he loses, so he can get back north of the border for Burn's Night, which it is tonight, or win by a much more convincing scoreline than his recent episodes.
C2: Challenger Sri Gutta. A strategy manager from Crawley, West Sussex. He has 2 Bachelor's degrees, a Master's degree and has just completed an MBA.
DC: Susie Dent and Michael Vaughan, who once represented Scotland in a Cricket World Cup. :geek:
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: N S E A T C U E N

C1: STANCE (6)
C2: SENATE (6)
DC: NUTCASE (7) CANTEENS (8)
Score: 6–6 (max 8)

An even start by our contestants today, while Michael reminds us of another DC guest in Bumble (NUTCASE  ), but DC get the darren too, so a very good start for them.

Round 2: I E I V M T N E L

C1: VILE (4)
C2: INVITEE (7)
DC: TIMELINE (8)
OT: ILMENITE (8) LENITIVE (8)
Score: 6–13 (max 16)

Oh dear, our champ has inflicted Nick's wroth by saying the dreaded "FOUR"...... Sri's 7 is impressive though and gives him the first lead of the day, while DC hit the heights of 8 again.

ILMENITE is a very common black mineral, iron titanate, FeTiO3, occurring in crystals but more commonly massive.
LENITIVE is an adjective meaning softening, soothing, or mitigating, as medicines or applications.

Round 3: T R U A G S E I N

C1: RATINGS (7)
C2: RESTING (7)
DC: SIGNATURE (18)
Score: 13–20 (max 34)

A fairly simple 9 missed by both contestants here, but Sri maintains his 7 point lead for now..............

Just before he picks his next letters, Nick reveals that Sri has been to Germany, Spain, Poland, Romania, Colombia, USA, India & China in the last 12 months :!: He does admit that they were mainly for learning reasons.

Round 4: V T D O E U R A N

C1: UNRATED (7)
C2: OUTRAN (6)
DC: VAUNTED (7)
OT: NATURED (7) NOVATED (7) RONDEAU (7) ROTUNDA (7) VAUNTER (7) VERDANT (7)
Score: 20–20 (max 41)

Ooops, spoke too soon there it seems. Mark is back in it with his 7 here.

Round 5: 25, 2, 10, 6, 1, 3. Target: 303.

C1: 303. (2 x 6 x 25) + 3 (10)
C2: 303. (2 x 6 x 25) + 3 (10)
Score: 30–30 (max 51)

With some "advice", you might say from Nick, Mark goes for the safe option of 1 large, which conjures up a simple one for us to solve.

Michael talks about the England team that he was captain of during the 2000's, especially focusing on an occasion in New Zealand where Steve Harmison forgot his pads and bat, yet he'd brought along his portable dartboard.

Teatime teaser: FELTARTY -> FLATTERY

Round 6: E O U X S T G L I

C1: UGLIEST (7)
C2: outlies
DC: EXTOLS (6)
OT: EULOGIST (8)
Score: 37–30 (max 59)

The regularly risked outlies makes another appearance, which is bad news for Sri, but good news for Mark as he leads for the first time today.

Round 7: D G O A S W E A P

C1: PODGES (6)
C2: PAGODAS (7)
Score: 37–37 (max 66)

But, Sri replies immediately with the darren to level the scores again.

Round 8: F S E I O Y D N E

C1: DEFINES (7)
C2: DEFINES (7)
DC: DENSIFY (7)
OT: INFEEDS (7)
Score: 44–44 (max 73)

More 7's here. The scores are still level. Is this the sign of things to come, I wonder :?:

Round 9: R D R A E I T N E

C1: misdeclared 6
C2: RETRAINED (18)
Score: 44–62 (max 91)

WOAH!! WOAH!!!! WOAH!!!!!! Our champion can't find another easy 9, and even more embarrassingly he forgets his 6 which neglected to write down in the first place :!:  :o Deary me.......

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "Heath Robinson", which was named after some chap called William Heath Robinson. :P (Don't think he's any relation by the way.)

Round 10: 100, 6, 2, 10, 5, 2. Target: 948.

C1: -
C2: 948. ((100 - 5) x 10) - 2 (10)
Score: 44–72 (max 101)

Mark seems to have lost his head now, as he misses a fairly simple numbers game too. This is surely Sri's to lose now.

Teatime teaser: SADHEELS -> HEADLESS

Round 11: T Q S O A O H M A

C1: MASH (4)
C2: SMOOTH (6)
DC: ASTHMA (6)
Score: 44–78 (max 107)

Dear oh dear, Mark seems to be capsizing faster than the Costa Concordia, as he only finds 4 again!! An impressive 6 by Sri though, as DC (and me) get the only other one.

Round 12: J S D E O E U R F

C1: REEDS (5)
C2: DEFERS (6)
DC: REFUSED (7)
Score: 44–84 (max 114)

And Mark, like the Titanic is now truly sunk, as Sri has wrapped up the game with his 6, while DC go darrenic yet again.

Round 13: P N A O R I A T C

C1: ACTION (6)
C2: CAPTION (7)
DC: CAPTAIN (7) CORTINA (7) RAINCOAT (8)
OT: CAPITANO (8) PARANOIC (8)
Score: 44–91 (max 122)

Mark can't score for toffee now. I think he'll definitely be wanting a consolation shot of whisky when he gets back home. :)

Round 14: 100, 1, 3, 10, 4, 5. Target: 960.

C1: 960. (100 - 4) x 10 (10)
C2: 960. (100 - 4) x 10 (10)
Score: 54–101 (max 132)

At least he learns from his mistakes though, as he gets past his half-ton, while Sri completes his well-deserved century. But, can he impress Michael Vaughan and finish on a Nelson :?:

Round 15: R U R A L M I C E

No one buzzes. The answer was MERCURIAL.
Final Score: 54–101 (max 142)

No, is the simple answer to that, but no matter, Sri has put in an impressive performance, which I suppose also answered the question about how good Mark would be against a decent opponent, a question which I think he'd rather have left unanswered.

454 points from 6 games isn't that impressive really, so unless we have a drought of octochamps this series, I'm not expecting Mark to be rejoining us in June for the finals.

Sri, on the other hand, showed more than enough promise today, and maybe he can achieve what Mark couldn't and become the 2nd octochamp of this series.

Join me tomorrow to see if he can stay on the right track.

Till then, bye bye. ;) :) :D

That'd be Burns' Night, James (or even more properly, Burns Night) - Mr Burns will be turning in his grave! :)
