Wednesday 11th January 2012 (Series 66, Prelim 3)

Post by James Robinson »

So, welcome one and all. This is the first Robinson Recap of the new Hewer era, the first of many, I hope.

So, as Nick would say, "Well done", for coming here, and enjoy.

Countdown recap for Wednesday 11 January 2012.

C1: Champion Jack Worsley (3 wins, 318 points.) An Apteforumite from Blackpool, Lancashire. He's a gap-year student who wants to be an accountant or criminologist, but after his numbers displays so far, Nick is definitely trying to push him towards the accountancy path, so he earn more than £8 an hour (what Nick earned when he was 26, back in 1970. ) His favourite is the John Steinbeck classic, Of Mice And Men, which leads to Nick telling a story about a school friend of his and a prank he did involving a dead mouse.
C2: Challenger Barry Williams. A tax adviser from Newton Longville, near Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. He also used to be a tax inspector :!: :P He likes to sing and plays the guitar for a local band and he also is a volunteer at the local theatre, which happens to be The Stables, which used to be the theatre of John Dankworth, and still the venue of choice for Cleo Laine.
DC: Susie Dent and Paul Zenon.
RR: Rachel Riley, who is 26 today. ;) :) :D  8-) (And Nick is promising a present for her later, if she's good.......... )
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: H T N X I U O A D

C1: HANDOUT (7)
C2: HOUND (5)
DC: OXIDANT (7)
Score: 7–0 (max 7)

An impressive start for Jack, as he gives a good HANDOUT to everyone here.

Round 2: S W D E I U H B E

C1: WISHED (6)
C2: BUSHED (6)
DC: BESIDE (6)
OT: DWEEBISH (8)
Score: 13–6 (max 15)

A super impressive 8 is missed by all here, especially me, as I got DWEEBS..........

Round 3: N W C K P A I A E

C1: PANIC (5)
C2: PANIC (5)
DC: PANCAKE (7)
Score: 18–11 (max 22)

There's me thinking that was going for that extra vowel to get PANCAKE. Clearly not.

Round 4: N Y D A O U T A U

C1: TODAY (5)
C2: TOADY (5)
OT: ADYTA (5) ATONY (5) AUNTY (5) DAUNT (5) DAYAN (5) NOYAU (5)
Score: 23–16 (max 27)

Like the last round, it's pancakes all round in this flat round. :D

An ADYTUM (plural ADYTA) is the most sacred or reserved part of any place of worship.
A NOYAU is a liqueur made from brandy, flavoured with nut kernels.

Round 5: 50, 75, 25, 100, 9, 1. Target: 654.

C1: 654. ((9 - 1) x 75) + 50 + (100 / 25) (10)
C2: 650.
Score: 33–16 (max 37)

4 large means 4 x 2.5 points for Jack, as well a a bigger lead. :)

Paul does a trick involving our birthday girl, 2 £20 notes and some scissors, and a quick-fix repair job. 8-)

Teatime teaser: LIVEALOT -> VOLATILE

C1: MILAGES (7)
C2: MOVIES (6)
DC: GLAIVES (7) LOVAGES (7)
OT: GLIOMAS (7) GOALIES (7) MISGAVE (7)
Score: 40–16 (max 44)

A slightly dubious 7 passes the Dent Scrutiny check, and sees Jack's lead go up to 24 already. Are we heading for another onslaught today :?:

A GLIOMA is a tumour of the brain composed of neuroglia.

Round 7: G L Q G E I O D V

C1: LOGGED (6)
C2: LOGGED (6)
DC: GLOVED (6) DOGGIE (6)

Just some plain old 6's in this one.

Round 8: R T L E O E S T I

C1: RETITLES (8)
C2: LOTTERIES (18)
Score: 46–40 (max 68)

WOAH! WOAH!! WOAH!!! How many people saw that coming :?: But, come it has, and Jack's lead has been slashed by three-quarters to 6 points :!:  :o

Round 9: J C R R U A E O S

C1: AROUSE (6)
C2: CARERS (6)
DC: CAROUSE (7) CAROUSER (8)
Score: 52–46 (max 76)

Jack might kick himself for 1) not sticking the C in front of AROUSE for CAROUSE, and 2) not sticking the R on the end of CAROUSE for CAROUSER for the darrenic 8. Amazingly, Paul & Susie reveal that they were talking about CAROUSE during the first break. :o 8-)

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "dominoes", a favourite of Susie's 4-year-old daughter, Thea.

Round 10: 50, 25, 2, 10, 7, 1. Target: 925.

C1: 925. (50 - 10 - 2 - 1) x 25 (10)

Teatime teaser: HEATSPAN -> PHEASANT

Round 11: L S D S E A E F O

C1: LASSOED (7)
C2: FLOSSED (7)
OT: FADELESS (8)
Score: 69–53 (max 94)

A very strange darrenic 8 was available, but our contestants are back to matching each other again.

Round 12: T R M A E A S R I

C1: MARRIES (7)
C2: MARRIES (7)
DC: AIRSTREAM (18)

C1: FANNIES (7)
C2: FANNERS (7)
DC: INFERNOS (8)
Score: 83–67 (max 120)

And another DC darren here, with Jack still not quite over the finishing line yet. Maybe a tricky numbers will make him squirm a bit.............

Round 14: 100, 8, 9, 10, 9, 8. Target: 300.

C1: 300. (10 - 8 + (9 / 9)) x 100 (10)
C2: -
Score: 93–67 (max 130)

OH DEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not really sure what to say here, apart from, "Well done, Jack". :P

Round 15: B R O A D M O O R

C1 buzzes on 7.5 seconds to say BOARDROOM which is correct.
Final Score: 103–67 (max 140)

Aha, at last an Apprentice-themed conundrum arrives, and with comes Jack's 4th consecutive century. Despite missing the 9, Jack still lead from start to finish and seemed in control throughout, mainly due to the fact that his opponent couldn't count for toffee it seems, especially when you consider that Jack would've needed the conundrum, if Barry had got all 3 numbers games....... :geek:

Just before we end, Nick does give Rachel her reward........ £8, as mentioned earlier, Nick's wage when he turned 26, as well as a bouquet of flowers. :)

So, join me tomorrow when Jack goes for 5 in a row. :D

Till then, as Nick would say, "Good afternoon". 8-)
