Monday 21st November 2011 (Series 65, Prelim 101)

Post by James Robinson »

Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, again, again, again, again, again, again, again, again, again, again. Although I'm sure this isn't a place called Vertigo. But, this is in tribute to World Hello Day, which it was on Monday.

Since Rhys is having trouble doing this recap, he's delegated it to me this week, for the rarity that is a Robinson Recap Treble Bill.

Enjoy.

Countdown recap for Monday 21 November 2011.

C1: Champion Paul Keane (7 wins, 640 points.) An acoountant from North Finchley, London.

DC: Susie Dent and Tim Vine.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: N T R E I O P C B

C1: POINTER (7)
C2: POINTER (7)
DC: PROTEIN (7) REPOINT (7) ENTROPIC (8)
Score: 7–7 (max 8)

DC go darrenic with their offering of 8, as Mike informs me that INCEPTOR is now ODE3-invalid...........

Round 2: S D H E A I C S D

C1: CADDIES (7)
C2: CADDIES (7)
OT: CADDISES (8)
Score: 14–14 (max 16)

If everyone had just stuck an S in their CADDIES, the darrenic 8 would've been theirs.

A CADDIS is a kind of woollen braid, ribbon, or tape.

Round 3: S R N W O E O V E

C1: ROOVES (6)
C2: swooner
DC: OVERSEWN (8)
Score: 20–14 (max 24)

Another darrenic 8 :!:  :o Is this Darren Day :?:

Round 4: P L G I O N T A E

C1: LEGATION (8)
C2: LEGATION (8)
DC: GELATION (8) PLEATING (8)
OT: PILOTAGE (8) PINOTAGE (8)
Score: 28–22 (max 32)

Loadsa loadsa 8's here. Mega coolness. 8-)

PINOTAGE is a red grape variety of South Africa, a cross between the Pinot Noir and the Hermitage.

Round 5: 50, 100, 9, 6, 9, 3. Target: 759.

C1: 759. ((6 + 9) x 50) + 9 (10)
C2: 759. (9 x 100) - (3 x 50) + 9 (10)
Score: 38–32 (max 42)

2 equally good ways to solve this one, as this game is going along nicely.

Tim, as per normal, goes one-line crazy, just the way we like it. ;) :) :D

Teatime teaser: ABLERISE -> ABSEILER

Round 6: M N D A E L T U Q

C1: MALTED (6)
C2: AMULET (6)
DC: UNTAMED (7)
OT: MANTLED (7)
Score: 44–38 (max 49)

A couple of 7's available here, but the 6's keep this game in the balance.

Round 7: T L R G E A I D A

C1: TRAILED (7)
C2: TRAILED (7)
DC: RADIATE (7) TRIAGED (7)
OT: GRADATE (7) LAIRAGE (7) LIGATED (7) RAILAGE (7) REGALIA (7)
Score: 51–45 (max 56)

Flat 7, flat 7, flat 7, flat 7, flat 7, flat 7, flat 7 round, round, round, round, round, round, round.

LAIRAGE is accommodation for farm animals, especially at docks or markets.
RAILAGE is an amount charged for transporting goods by rail.

Round 8: F C B E I E R X P

C1: PREFIX (6)
C2: bicep
OT: EXPIRE (6) FIERCE (6) PIECER (6) PIERCE (6) RECIPE (6)
Score: 57–45 (max 62)

Lots of 6's here, but Paul doubles his advantage, because the singular of BICEPS is BICEPS. :?

Round 9: K D T D U O E R N

C1: underdo
C2: ROUNDED (7)
OT: KNOUTED (7) REDOUND (7) TRODDEN (7)
Score: 57–52 (max 69)

And because you can't underdo something, Clare is back in the game and is closer to Paul than ever before.

As part of a popular culture theme this week, Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of the James Bond 007 films, GoldenEye, The World Is Not Enough and A View To A Kill.

Round 10: 25, 2, 4, 7, 9, 9. Target: 334.

C1: 334. ((9 + 4) x 25) + 9 (10)
C2: 336.
Score: 67–52 (max 79)

Oh dear, a shocking miss by Clare trebles Paul's advantage to 15 points.

Teatime teaser: HOBOWELL -> BLOWHOLE

Round 11: T G W O E I V L O

C1: VIOLET (6)
C2: VIOLET (6)
DC: GLOVE (5) VOLE (4)
OT: GOOLIE (6) GWEILO (6) OOLITE (6)
Score: 73–58 (max 85)

A few weird 6's available, but the contestants stick to the simple one.

An OOLITE is a limestone composed of minute rounded concretions resembling fish roe, in some places altered to ironstone by replacement with iron oxide.

Round 12: S G R A E I T N S

C1: INGRATES (8)
C2: ARTINESS (8)
DC: ASSERTING (18)
Score: 81–66 (max 103)

Not the hardest 9 of all time, but too hard for our contestants to spot.

Round 13: L Z F R A E A Y J

C1: FLAYER (6)
C2: FLARE (5)
Score: 87–66 (max 109)

But, Paul wraps up his octochamp status with that darrenic 6.

Round 14: 75, 25, 3, 6, 6, 3. Target: 676.

C1: 675. (6 + 3) x 75 (7)
C2: 675. (6 + 3) x 75 (7)
RR: 676. (3 x 3 x 75) + (6 / 6) (10)
Score: 94–73 (max 119)

I think the moral of this numbers game is when one way doesn't quite work, try another way............

Round 15: Y U R T O A S T T

C1 buzzes on 0.5 seconds to say STATUTORY which is correct.
Final Score: 104–73 (max 129)

With the exception of Friday's conundrum, all of Paul's solves have been in 1 second or less :!:  Impressive for a non-Apterite it has to be said.

Those 104 points take Paul's total to 744, giving him the #3 spot for the time being. Well, he can only drop one spot at the worst, so he's definitely returning to the finals, which start in just over 2 weeks time, although, we won't see him till December 12th at the earliest.

I'll be back tomorrow with........, erm........., oh yeah, tomorrow's recap. :P

Till then, bye bye.
