Round 1: R E D U N I L N A

C1: INLANDER (8)
C2: NAILED (6)
DC: UNDERLAIN (18)
Score: 8–0 (max 18)

OOOOOOOOOHHH!!! Adam may have the early lead with his 8, but he had the darrenic 9, but decided not to risk it.

C1: STEAKS (6)
C2: SKATES (6)
DC: TWEAKS (6)
OT: STAKES (6) STOKES (6) SWEATS (6) TAWSES (6) WASTES (6)
Score: 14–6 (max 24)

Round 3: R E T I M O D E G

C1: MERITED (7)
C2: GOITRE (6)
DC: GEOMETRID (18)
Score: 21–6 (max 42)

Oh dear, no one actually mentions to Cheryl, that she could've stuck the D on the end of her GOITRE for a 7, but that pales into insignificance thanks to DC's ultra cool 9 :!:  :o 8-)

Round 4: R I B V S E I O H

C1: IVORIES (7)
C2: SHIVER (6)
DC: ORIBIS (6)
OT: VIBRIOS (7)
Score: 28–6 (max 49)

Adam tickles the IVORIES there with his 7, and already has a lead of above 20.

A VIBRIO is any of several comma- or S -shaped bacteria of the genus Vibrio, certain species of which are pathogenic for humans and other animals.

Round 5: 50, 2, 2, 8, 7, 5. Target: 134.

C1: 134. (50 + 8 + 2 + 7) x 2 (10)
C2: 135.
Score: 38–6 (max 59)

Cheryl is having no luck tonight, as the simple target evades her, letting Adam pull away even further.

Jonathan tells of the story of when he was reporting on Prince Charles' trip to Australia in 1994, while when he was going to a phone box to report nothing much that had been going on, but during his 5 minute walk to the phone box, Prince Charles had survived an assassination attempt. :o

Teatime teaser: BIGDARTS -> DIRTBAGS

Round 6: S E L O H M A E G

C1: GLEAMS (6)
C2: HOMAGES (7)
DC: megaholes

C1: PUNNET (6)
C2: PUNNET (6)
DC: PANTO (5)
JS: PEANUT (6)
OT: TONNEAU (7)
Score: 44–19 (max 74)

A few PUNNETs and PEANUTs around, but the darren is left alone again.

Round 8: G E O X L N M A U

C1: MANGLE (6)
C2: MANGLE (6)
DC: LOUNGE (6) LANGUE (6)
OT: LEGUAN (6) LANUGO (6) LEGMAN (6) MANGEL (6) MAGNOX (6)

Loadsa loadsa 6's here.

C1: GUITARS (7)
C2: SUGAR (5)
DC: SATIRIC (7)
OT: GASTRIC (7)
Score: 57–25 (max 87)

Adam strings his way to a nice 7, and his lead of 32 is restored.

Susie's Origin Of Words tells of the origins of the falconry terms "haggard", "lure", "codger", "pride of place" and "turn tail".

Round 10: 100, 10, 5, 1, 6, 10. Target: 248.

C1: 249. ((100 / (10 - 6)) x 10) - 1 (7)

OT: 248. (((100 + 10) x (10 + 1)) / 5) + 6 (10)
Score: 64–25 (max 97)

A tricky 1 large appears, and Adam does very well to spot 1 away. It is tricky, but doable, just not by Rachel. :(

Teatime teaser: HUGEDART -> DAUGHTER

Round 11: S E N A S O T A C

C1: SONATAS (7)
C2: COASTS (6)
DC: CONTESSA (8)
OT: ASSONATE (8)
Score: 71–25 (max 105)

The game's almost won now thanks to Adam's 7, but DC find one of the 2 available 8's.

ASSONATE is a verb meaning to correspond in sound.

Round 12: S B E A P L D O E

C1: ELAPSED (7)
C2: PLEASED (7)
DC: deposable ALBEDOS (7)
OT: PEDALOES (8)
Score: 78–32 (max 113)

Interestingly, both contestants decide to stick with 7. I wonder if either or both of them were thinking about PEDALOES :?: As it is, no-one in the studios spots the darren, but Adam won't mind as he's now won the game.

Round 13: N I T E M E V A R

C1: VERMINATE (18)
C2: RETAIN (6)
Score: 96–32 (max 131)

And what a way to finish the letters off. 8-) The 3rd available 9 of the day, and Adam looked like he spotted it as soon as the R came out of the consonant box.

Round 14: 75, 5, 9, 3, 7, 2. Target: 544.

C1: 544. (75 x 7) + (5 x 2) + 9 (10)
C2: 541.
Score: 106–32 (max 141)

Cheryl must just be wishing the game was over now, as she complete a triple nul pois on the numbers games, which also gives Adam century #6, can he now solve conundrum #6.

Round 15: N E T T G R O S S

C1 buzzes on 2 seconds to say STRONGEST which is correct.
Final Score: 116–32 (max 151)

Indeed he can. Complete dominance more or less by Adam there and his 6th win was probably the most comfortable of the lot. Surely octochampdom is nothing much more than a formality for him now.

Join me tomorrow for the 7th installment of his journey.

Till then, bye bye.

It's ironic that Jonathan Maitland spotted 'SATIRIC' and described it as a Scrabble word (I think mot normal people would use 'SATIRICAL' to mean the same thing), as I played it in a Scrabble match a few months ago, but missed it today.

That must be one of the easiest conundrums ever, by the way.
