Lee won his first game yesterday with a century, which is always a good start. His first defence today is against Brian Gregory, a retired local government officer from Southborough, Kent. Brian likes bowls, painting and Pam Ayres poems. Today he's being sponsored to raise money for the rebirth of his local church and community centre.

Round 1: H C F N A I E A S
C1: FANCIES (7)
C2: FINCHES (7)
DC: FIANCES (7) FINCAS (6)
OT: CHAINES (7) FASCIAE (7) FASCINE (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)
Chaînés are fast turns from one foot to the other in ballet. Fasciae is the plural of fascia but only where it means thin sheaths of fibrous tissue enclosing muscles; for the gawdy pink covers that teenage girls put on their mobile phones and those boards under the gutter on your house, it's fascias. A fascine is a bundle of rods used in construction or military operations for filling in marshy grounds and for strengthening embankments.

Round 2: T N U H E E V S O
C1: EVENTS (6)
C2: EVENTS (6)
DC: ENTHUSE (7)
OT: SEVENTH (7) VENTOUSE (8)
Score: 13–13 (max 15)
Ventouse is a cup-shaped suction device used to aid childbirth. I remember being shown these before my nippers were born. They really do just stick it on the baby's head like a plunger, and pull it out. Babies delivered with this often have quite conical heads for a while as well :)

Round 3: D L S R E U I R O
C1: LORRIES (7)
C2: SOLDIER (7)
DC: LOUSIER (7) SLURRED (7)
OT: DURRIES (7) LOURIES (7) SOLIDER (7) SURLIER (7)
Score: 20–20 (max 22)

Round 4: D S L I O W R E S
C1: SOLDIERS (8)
C2: ROWDIES (7)
DC: WORDLESS (8)
Score: 28–20 (max 30)
D'oh! Brian had soldier in the previous round, but failed to spot the plural minutes later!
Double d'oh! Brian also had WORDLESS but didn't chance it.

Round 5: 75, 7, 5, 3, 10, 7. Target: 852.
C1: 844.(75+5+3)*10+7+7 (5)
C2: -
CV: 852. (75+7+3)*10+7-5 (10)
Score: 33–20 (max 40)

Teatime teaser: TRUELADY -> ADULTERY

Round 6: N D M E O O B P A
C1: BOOMED (6)
C2: MOANED (6)
DC: POMADE (6) BEDPAN (6) ABDOMEN (7)
Score: 39–26 (max 47)

Round 7: Y N D T E O I L I
C1: EDITION (7)
C2: EDITION (7)
DC: LENTOID (7)
Score: 46–33 (max 54)
Lentoid means lentil-shaped, and apparently words like "lens" are derived from this.

Round 8: T F K T E A I R T
C1: TATTIER (7)
C2: FATTIER (7)
OT: TITRATE (7)
Score: 53–40 (max 61)
Titrate is the bitrate at which you can download porn. Or it's something you do in chemistry to find out the amount of something in something else (that's as much as I understood from the definition... little help here Dinos?)

Round 9: N D P S E E O D E
C1: DEPENDS (7)
C2: deepened
DC: DESPOND (7) SPONDEE (7)
OT: DEEPENS (7) DEPOSED (7) SPEEDED (7)
Score: 60–40 (max 68)

Round 10: 4, 5, 9, 7, 2, 2. Target: 458.
C1: -
C2: 454.Mistake in working.
OT: 458. (9*5*(7-2)+4)*2 (10)
Score: 60–40 (max 78)

Teatime teaser: MOBYLOOT -> LOBOTOMY

Round 11: J M S L U I A I M
C1: MAULS (5)
C2: JAILS (5)
DC: MAILS (5) MAIMS (5)
OT: JULIAS (6) MAJLIS (6) MIAULS (6) MILIUM (6) LAMIUM (6) LAMIUMS (7)
Score: 65–45 (max 85)
A julia is an orange and black American butterfly, majlis (plural same) is the parliament of various North African and Middle Eastern countries (especially Iran), miaul is an (outdated) alternative for meow, a milium is a keratinous nodule on the skin and lamiums are plants of a genus which comprises the dead-nettles.

Round 12: T B C E A A G Z O
C1: GAZEBO (6)
C2: GAZEBO (6)
OT: BOCAGE (6) CABOTAGE (8)
Score: 71–51 (max 93)
Gazebo is a nice spot from both players. Bocage is (in France) pastureland divided into small hedged fields interspersed with groves of trees, or it's the modelling of leaves, flowers and plants in clay, especially for porcelain figurines. Cabotage is the right to operate sea, air or other transport services within a particular territory.

Round 13: C P T S E E A U L
C1: capulets
C2: SPECULATE (18)
OT: PECULATES (18)
Score: 71–69 (max 111)
Lee probably got a little muddled with capsules and caplets here, and ended up with Juliet's family name. All of which was immaterial as Brian stormed in with, according to Des, "the first nine of series 59" (didn't we have did DEPLETION yesterday? Maybe he means spotted by a contestant) to virtually wipe out what had looked like a comfortable lead for Lee. Exciting stuff!
Oh, and peculate (also the only 8 from the selection) means to embezzle, especially from public funds. So I guess you can peculate to accumulate as well :)

Round 14: 25, 8, 2, 3, 7, 2. Target: 336.
C1: 336.7*2*25-3*2-8 (10)
C2: 334.
Score: 81–69 (max 121)

Round 15: L A C I N G M I X
C1 buzzes on 2 seconds to say CLIMAXING which is correct.
Score: 91–69 (max 131)
Lee sniggers slightly as he gives the slightly rude but correct answer to once again make the scoreline look convincing. He probably also guffawed off-camera as Des said "69 isn't to be sniffed at" when referring to Brian's tally with regards to his sponsorship. Fnarr fnarr indeed.
Another high score from Lee, but another nine missed, making it a little tricky to try and second-guess how far he might go...

Sure thing. A titration, normally involving a base and an alkali, is used to determine the molarity (or concentration) of either substance when the molarity of the other substance is known, eg 25cm^3 Sodium Hydroxide, concentration 0.1M. You gradually allow the acid into the hydroxide, containing pH indicator, using a burette. When the solution is neutral (ie equal amount of acid and alkali) a colour change occurs. You then record the volume of acid used and perform a calculation to find the molarity. Hope that helps!

Felt compelled to respond to this before my brain cells went dead as I haven't done any chemistry in weeks!
