Carl is going well on his return to the show (after being CHEATED out of the previous series by PAULINE HUGGINS), and a fourth victory today would be a big step towards qualification for the impending series finals. Attempting to thwart his progress today is Barbara Cleggett, a pharmacy manager from Maidstone in Kent. She's been married to her husband (obviously) Bob for 35 years, and they have two children, Russell and Adam, and a grandson, Christopher.

Round 1: G N P I S E R S U
C1: SPRINGS (7)
C2: SINGERS (7)
DC: PRESSING (8)
OT: PERUSING (8) SPRINGES (8)
Score: 7–7 (max 8)
Carl will be kicking himself that he somehow managed to miss slipping the 'E' into his word to get springes, which of course are those nooses/snares for catching small game which we all use daily.

Round 2: N T E A P G O E L
C1: POTEEN (6)
C2: POLENTA (7)
DC: ANTELOPE (8)
OT: ELONGATE (8)
Score: 7–14 (max 16)

Round 3: F Q T I C A S O R
C1: FACTORS (7)
C2: COAST (5)
Score: 14–14 (max 23)

Round 4: S L E E R T I O S
C1: LOITERS (7)
C2: RISSOLE (7)
DC: TIRELESS (8)
OT: LEISTERS (8) ESTOILES (8)
Score: 21–21 (max 31)
A leister is a pronged spear for catching salmon (I tend to keep mine in the same cupboard as my springes) and an estoile is (in heraldry) a star with wavy points or lines, usually six in number.

Round 5: 75, 50, 100, 25, 2, 7. Target: 528.
C1: 529.75*7+100/25 (7)
C2: 525.
CV: 528. (100-25)*7+(2*75)/50 (10)
Score: 28–21 (max 41)
Carol can't really have those ten points, because she was way outside the time with this one.

Teatime teaser: LPPRICES -> CLIPPERS

Round 6: R X E I M P O Z T
C1: IMPORT (6)
C2: MOPIER (6)
DC: EXPORT (6)
OT: PERMIT (6) POXIER (6) PREMIX (6)
Score: 34–27 (max 47)

Round 7: L C A N S R E I A
C1: carnalise
C2: SALINE (6)
DC: CANARIES (8) CARLINES (8) ARSENICAL (18)
Score: 34–33 (max 65)

Round 8: D N O I L H O I S
C1: LIONS (5)
C2: HINDS (5)
DC: OLDISH (6)
OT: DHONIS (6) LINISH (6) HOISIN (6) SOLIDI (6)
Score: 39–38 (max 71)
A tricky round with a few maxima, none of which particularly leap out at you. Dhonis are small wooden sailing vessels used in India and SE Asia; to linish is to polish or remove excess material by contact with an abrasive moving belt; hoisin is the sauce you have in Chinese duck pancakes (mmm) and solidi is the plural of solidus, which is a slash like this: /, a curve in a Chemistry graph (of composition against temperature, below which the substance is entirely solid) and also a gold Roman coin.

Round 9: A I M N W D O D A
C1: MIND (4)
C2: DOMAIN (6)
DC: DIAMOND (7)
Score: 39–44 (max 78)

"Two from the top and five of your choice" requests Barbara.
Carol points out that this makes seven numbers, and subsequently offers to slip Barbara one under the desk. Fnarr fnarr, gyok etc.

Round 10: 100, 25, 4, 4, 2, 2. Target: 134.
C1: 134.100+25+4+4+2/2 (10)
C2: 134.100+25+4+4+2/2 (10)
Score: 49–54 (max 88)

Teatime teaser: SILLYPAT -> PLAYLIST

Round 11: I O S P T E S M D
C1: POSTIES (7)
C2: STOMPED (7)
DC: DEPOSITS (8) TOPSIDES (8) DESPOTISM (18)
Score: 56–61 (max 106)

Round 12: Y K U A R B I G N
C1: BARKING (7)
C2: BRAYING (7)
DC: BRAKING (7)
OT: BURYING (7)
Score: 63–68 (max 113)

Round 13: B D N E O V T A R
C1: BROADEN (7)
C2: ABORTED (7)
OT: BEVATRON (8)
Score: 70–75 (max 121)
A bevatron is a type of synchotron apparently. I'm guessing it's something to do with Transformers. And it should also be Kirk's nickname, if it isn't already.

Round 14: 7, 6, 4, 10, 50, 75. Target: 771.
C1: 777.
C2: 770.(75+6-4)*10 (7)
CV: 771. (75+6)*10-50+4+7 (10)
Score: 70–82 (max 131)

Round 15: L I N G T H I N G
C1 buzzes on 4 seconds to say LIGHTNING which is correct.
Score: 80–82 (max 141)

A relieved Jason Cullen is still hanging on in there as #8 seed, as Carl will look back on a game with many missed maxes knowing that just one (or even not risking his shonky niner) would have given him a fourth victory. Oh well, never mind. At least he wasn't CHEATED this time. Despite the fact it was a tight game, Barbara knew she was going to win all along it would seem. "Are you surprised?" asked Des. "No, just pleased" replied the new champion, with an air of breathtaking arrogance ;)

Ah shithouse. For the second week running I make a cow's arse of submitting this to Coral, this time by accidentally submitting it as Friday 23rd May's show. Actually it said Friday 23th in the dropdown box, but I hardly feel in a position to point out the mistakes of others at the moment
