They don't need much introduction but very briefly Charlie Reams was a runner up in series 59 and in the Champion of Champions XIII. He also runs some unofficial countdown forum and apparently some tacky game to go with it.

Junaid Mubeen beat Charlie Reams in that final of series 59 but then was beaten by Reams en route to the COCXIII final. Runner 'Been has raised lots of wonga running various marathons and half marathons.

Gary Osborne is next to Susie for the fourth and final time for these specials and just like I thought "who the fuck is that?" he will probably think the same of the two contestants today despite their "fame" in the Countdown world.

It's Oxford v Cambridge, Ginger v Not Ginger, Reams v Mubeen, only one can win, the other will be cast aside sneered at by Countdowners, their ego forever damaged.

Let battle commence...

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: L S N M E A E O U

C1: ENAMELS (7)
C2: LOANEES (7)
OT: SOLANUM (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

A strong start from both knights as they lock horns.

Round 2: T R D M O I O A O

C1: DOORMAT (7)
C2: TOROID (6)
Score: 14–7 (max 14)

First strike to Reams as he finds the not too unusual darren.

Round 3: C G N T E A E M I

C1: MAGNETIC (8)
C2: MAGNETIC (8)
OT: GEMINATE (8)
Score: 22–15 (max 22)

Reams maxes again and Mubeen keeps with him for now.

Round 4: T S N B A E A E V

C1: SAVANTE (7)
C2: ABSENT (6)
Score: 29–15 (max 29)

Another blow to Mubeen as Reams powers on with his second darren.

Round 5: 62, 12, 7, 1, 5, 10. Target: 130.

C1: 130. (12+1)*10 (10)
C2: 130. (7+5+1)*10 (10)
Score: 39–25 (max 39)

This numbers game is too easy for the warriors and they dispose of it with ease.

DC Guest Time: I got distracted with other things when Gary came on but he said something about Gracie Fields and false teeth. Yes, that was it.

Teatime teaser: CRUELFAG -> GRACEFUL

Round 6: R D S D O A E A E

C1: ADORES (6)
C2: SADDER (6)
DC: DEODARS (7) ERASED (6)
Score: 45–31 (max 46)

The max game is off although Mubeen did have DEODARS but amazingly he didn't risk it.

Round 7: Q T B L A I O A J

C1: BLOAT (5)
C2: QIBLA (5)
OT: BALTI (5) BIOTA (5) JABOT (5) LABIA (5) TABLA (5) TALAQ (5)
Score: 50–36 (max 51)

The letters are being unkind as only 5's are available.

Round 8: T X S H O E O D Y

C1: HOOTED (6)
C2: shooted
DC: SOOTHED (7)
Score: 56–36 (max 58)

Mubeen makes his second error of the match deciding to go with the improbable SHOOTED^ as Reams marches ahead on the path to glory.

Round 9: F T G R U E I U E

C1: FIGURE (6)
C2: REFUGE (6)
OT: FUTURE (6) REFUTE (6)
Score: 62–42 (max 64)

6 is the max here and each spot one. Mubeen's hope lies in the numbers game coming up.

Susie's Origins of Words: Apparently Dr Franz Anton Mesmer is the root of the word mesmerise.

Round 10: 12, 87, 8, 3, 4, 8. Target: 724.

C1: -
C2: 724. (87+3)*8+8-4 (10)
Score: 62–52 (max 74)

Reams fluffs it leaving Mubeen to strike back slashing the lead by 10 points keeping this contest alive going into the final third.

Teatime teaser: DINEFISH -> FINISHED

Round 11: T S P C I O I A O

C1: ISOTOPIC (8)
C2: COPITAS (7)
Score: 70–52 (max 82)

A hammer blow to Mubeen who only recently clawed it back as Reams relentlessly picks out ISOTOPIC for 8 and again another darren. Excellent battle.

Round 12: D R N L E I A R N

C1: DRAINER (7)
C2: INLANDER (8)
Score: 70–60 (max 90)

But Mubeen comes back for more, savagely finding a darrenic 8 of his own.

Round 13: S H Z V I I E R W

C1: VIZIERS (7)
C2: wishier
Score: 77–60 (max 97)

This brutal affair could be over now as Reams finds a terrific word to put him almost clear. Just a numbers game to survive. Mubeen needs to be within 5 and better than Reams to take it to a crucial.

Round 14: 37, 4, 1, 5, 10, 6. Target: 649.

C1: -
C2: 651. (4-1)*6*37-10-5 (7)
RR: 649. (10+6+1)*37+5*4 (10)
Score: 77–67 (max 107)

Miraculously Reams again falters with the finishing line in sight. Mubeen seizes his chance and takes what could be the most crucial 7 points of his life. With one victory each it looks like a semi-crucial conundrum will decide who will have the eternal bragging rights.

Please reveal today's conundrum...

Round 15: K I L L A B A A A

BOOM!

C1 buzzes on 0.5 second to say BALALAIKA which is correct.

With the conundrum barely revealed Reams has won it. After losing his first game against Mubeen he has won the next two to take his place in the Countdown Hall of Fame.

Final Score: 87–67 (max 117)

More importantly: Reams 2 - 1 Mubeen

Case closed.

Lovely recap, thanks for the kind words. I haven't seen the episode yet but I hope it came across what a good time we were having. The numbers change was a bit mean but it's nice that they're still experimenting after 28 years, and honestly I was pleased to get any points at all. I believe Junaid was right behind on the conundrum, and Damian said he would've left it at a draw. The first draw for a decade! Really not sure where that answer came from, I was only vaguely aware of what a balalaika is, so I may have remembered it from my many happy hours spent reading the list of all conundrums. Anyway it was a real pleasure to be invited back and all of us had an awesome day. Thanks to Kate for suggesting us :)

Yes it did look like it was fun. I deliberately left out details such as your "Hi Rach" which was very casual and showed that you were not strangers to each other. Also Junaid starts dancing in round 7 I think and I omitted that from the recap and also how Junaid asked for a round of applause and your declaration of "zero away". I left these out as I didn't think it fitted with the tone of the recap that I was going for. Hopefully it came across all sort of "combat-like" which is what I was trying to achieve. If I didn't then I guess I am just a shit recapper. :|

She was meant to say "Hi Chaz" which is how we greet each other online, but she bottled it

I have a feeling that Charlie would trade his 2-1 victory for a 2-1 loss if it meant he could have Junaid's win - a series' winner is a bit special....

Probably you're just trying to provoke me, you terrible man, but really I'm not sure either way. The CoC win was special because that whole tournament was played in such a phenomenal atmosphere, and without it I would never have played my game vs Corby Jnr which was both technically and emotionally my finest hour. On the other hand Junaid's name will always be on the front page of CDB, it was Carol's last game, it was a series final, and it was the game I most wanted to win of all. The special was great fun but easily the least important of the three to me, so I'd happily trade that. On balance, no complaints.
