Tony made his debut yesterday and with spots like PELOTA and PILOTAGE he is certainly more than capable of stringing a few wins together. Standing in his way is the rather lovely Philippa who bears more than a passing resemblance to our last lovely Cambridge lady, Sarah Flynn.

Round 1: T T S P A I E R J
C1: PIRATES (7)
C2: PIRATES (7)
DC: ARTISTE (7) PATTIES (7) PARTIES (7)
OT: Around 20 sevens according to Countmax of which I can be arsed to list none.
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

Round 2: S G I E N L M O N
C1: MELONS (6)
C2: MINGLES (7)
DC: LEGIONS (7)
OT: LINGOES (7) and GINNELS (7) but like the last selection it did seem like there should be something better.
Score: 7–14 (max 14)

A GINNEL, for you non-northerners, is a narrow alley or passageway between two walls or buildings.

Round 3: T R D D I E A N M
C1: Realised he used the "I" twice (do we reckon he was about to offer DAINTIER then?)
C2: TRAINED (7)
DC: DANDIER (7)
OT: A few others and again I cannot be arsed laboriously listing them but I can be arsed typing that I cannot be arsed so by now you must be thinking: "Sheesh! It would have been quicker had this tosser just listed them." Actually, I probably would have listed them had I not started these sentences. I suppose I could delete them and you'd never know but I'd know and there would always be a distance between us as a result.
Score: 7–21 (max 21)

Round 4: A S T Q L E I P N
C1: pilates
C2: pilates
DC: PANTILES (8)
OT: and it's anagram PLAINEST (8) but then I imagine you all already had it written down.
Score: 7–21 (max 29)

Round 5: 50, 8, 6, 2, 4, 7. Target: 543.
C1: 542.
C2: 543.(6/2+8)*50-7 (10)
Score: 7–31 (max 39)

Teatime teaser: LACKWEAK -> CAKEWALK

Round 6: O P S R E A M F D
C1: FEDORAS (7)
C2: SOARED (6)
DC: DAMPERS (7)
OT: SERFDOM (7) RADOMES (7) and a couple of others.
Score: 14–31 (max 46)

Round 7: N L S Y U O I E R
C1: soiler
C2: LESION (6)
DC: LOUSIER (7)
OT: ELUSION (7) LOURIES (7)
Score: 14–37 (max 53)

A LOURIE is a type of African bird with either crimson or grey plumage

Round 8: T Z S O A E F D I
C1: FASTED (6)
C2: FOISTED (7)
DC: IODATES (7)
OT: The old fave, STIFADO (7) (Joseph), is there but beware Scrabblers that's an ODE-only!
Score: 14–44 (max 60)

Round 9: N R B W E U O E L
C1: BOURNE (6)
C2: brewer
DC: "There must be more than a six" exclaims Martin Jarvis.
OT: Countmax disagrees just a few more sixes.
Score: 20–44 (max 66)

Round 10: 2, 3, 7, 5, 8, 75. Target: 517.
C1: 517.Same method (10)
C2: 517.75*7-5-3 (10)
Score: 30–54 (max 76)

Teatime teaser: SAMECUPS -> CAMPUSES

Round 11: B N G A O I E R N
C1: "Nothing".
C2: BEARING (7)
DC: RINGBONE (8)

OT: ADVECTS (7) OCTAVES (7) SCATTED (7) etc
Score: 37–68 (max 91)

Round 13: L G H T E I I H X
C1: hilight
C2: LIGHT (5)
DC: HEIGHT (6) HELIX (5)
OT: EIGHTH (6) is the only other six.
Score: 37–73 (max 97)

Round 14: 3, 4, 7, 6, 10, 75. Target: 381.
C1: 380.(7*6-4)*10 (7)
C2: -
CV: 381. (75-4-7)*6-3 (10)
Score: 44–73 (max 107)

Edit: There were a few methods for this one so thought I better include them.

Me: [7-(3*4-10)]75+6, Howard: (4 + (7+3)/10) x 75 + 6 and the fun (?!) way by Michael Wallace: (75+10+6*7)*3

Round 15: H A R D F A C E S
No one buzzes. The answer was HEADSCARF.
Score: 44–73 (max 117)

The flattest ever selection? I would still rather have the occasional flat selection than have a load of QXZIIIIIYV selections like they used to have in the olden days (olden days = when Damian Eadie was appearing on the show). Philippa has had a good debut and appears equally comfortable in the letter rounds and the number rounds. Perhaps today's conundrum was a little too tough to start judging her on that aspect of the game: I didn't get it either  . It's great to see Martin Jarvis in DC since this virtually rules out the possibility of his being in the final. (Sorry if I am a little bitchy at the moment I am menstruating.)

By the way did anyone catch Martin Jarvis's first half chat? I missed it but vaguely heard him say something along the lines of cramming it in in 90 seconds: makes you feel sorry for his missus.

Okay, that's enough - I am away to gently lap at a saucer of milk.

We thought rather the same thing. (he was telling us the story of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 90 seconds, and it was thoroughly boring and just a bit weird, but not in a good way, just in a boring way)
