We're all familiar with Peter now - he's onto his sixth game and I would sum him up by saying he's very strong on the numbers, and good but a little inconsistent on the letters. Today he faces David Dunnington, a retired financial advisor from Kibworth in Leicestershire. He's been married for 48 years ( ) and is heavily involved in a charitable organisation which refurbishes unwanted tools for developing countries. I expect after 48 years of marriage he probably knows a thing or two about unwanted tools ;)

Round 1: M P N I A I E S C
C1: PANICS (6)
C2: PANICS (6)
DC: AMNESIC (7)
OT: PISCINAE (8)
Score: 6–6 (max 8)
A piscina is a swimming pool, innit.

Round 2: D S U E C J A I R
C1: CRUISED (7)
C2: SAUCIER (7)
DC: JUICERS (7) CARDIES (7)
OT: SIDECAR (7) CRUSADE (7) ADJURES (7) RADICES (7) RESIDUA (7)
Score: 13–13 (max 15)
To adjure is to urge [someone to do/say something], radices is the plural of radix, being the base of a system of numeration, and residua is the plural of residuum, which is chemical residue.

Round 3: D T B O E I R X E
C1: DEBTOR (6)
C2: exiter
DC: ORBITED (7)
Score: 19–13 (max 22)
Rats, exited would have been much safer. Exiter probably sounded familiar cos it's a city in Devon :D

Round 4: S Q R U O E T O B
C1: BOOSTER (7)
C2: SOBER (5)
DC: TORQUES (7)
OT: QUESTOR (7) REBOOTS (7) ROQUETS (7) OUBOETS (7)
Score: 26–13 (max 29)
Roquet is to strike another ball with one's own; which, as well as being a slightly awkward moment during a bout of DP, is also a croquet thang. Ouboet is an affectionate term for an older brother or male friend in South Africa.

Round 5: 25, 8, 5, 1, 3, 6. Target: 447.
C1: 447.6*3*25-8+5 (10)
C2: 441.
Score: 36–13 (max 39)

Teatime teaser: CUTEROSY -> COURTESY

Round 6: T G R E I A K S M
C1: MIGRATES (8)
C2: MISTAKE (7)
DC: RAGTIME (7) MAGISTER (8)
OT: STERIGMA (8) SITKAMER (8)
Score: 44–13 (max 47)
Sterigma is a spore-bearing projection from a cell in some fungi (I'm sure Richard Brittain can tell us more) and a sitkamer is another South African word, this time for a sitting room.

Round 7: E O E T D Z N U T
C1: TOUTED (6)
C2: DENOTE (6)
DC: NOTED (5)
Score: 50–19 (max 53)
Noted is not an anagram of denote, Jennie Bond. Some other sixes here too, but who wants to hear about rubbish old sixes?

Round 8: N Y P A I O S E N
C1: PENSION (7)
C2: PANSY (5)
OT: PINYONS (7) SAPONIN (7) SPINNEY (7)
Score: 57–19 (max 60)
The financial advisor will be kicking himself at missing 'pension'. Pinyon is a variant spelling of pinon, which is a small pine tree, and saponin is some kind of toxic compound.

Round 9: F P H I A O E T R
C1: POET (4)
C2: PROFIT (6)
DC: TRIPE (5) POTHER (6)
Score: 57–25 (max 66)
Some other sixes here too which I can't be bothered to list.

Round 10: 75, 8, 9, 5, 9, 7. Target: 945.
C1: 950.(8+5)*75-9-9-7 (7)
C2: 945.Mistake in working.
CV: 945. (((7+8-9)*5)+75)*9 (10)
Score: 64–25 (max 76)

Teatime teaser: ROOKCOVE -> OVERCOOK

Round 11: L C W O E I S N R
C1: CLOWNS (6)
C2: SCOWLER (7)
DC: COWRIES (7)
OT: LICENSOR (8)
Score: 64–32 (max 84)

Round 12: T S L E O A R E G
C1: RELATES (7)
C2: STORAGE (7)
DC: LEGATORS (8) GLOATERS (8)
OT: OLEASTER (8) AEROGELS (8)
Score: 71–39 (max 92)
An oleaster is a type of ornamental Eurasian shrub, and an aerogel is a solid material of extremely low density, produced by removing the liquid component from a conventional gel.

Round 13: A I U E R T L M S
C1: malters
C2: MUSTER (6)
DC: ALTRUISM (8) MURALIST (8) SIMULATE (8)
OT: ULTRAISM (8) MURIATES (8)
Score: 71–45 (max 100)

Round 14: 1, 4, 10, 7, 6, 50. Target: 579.
C1: 579.(50+7)*10+6+4-1 (10)
C2: 579.Mistake in working.
Score: 81–45 (max 110)

Round 15: I N P U T G A G S
C2 buzzes on 24 seconds to say UPSTAGING which is correct.
Score: 81–55 (max 120)

Isn't it funny how often the person who is behind going into the conundrum goes on to solve it? No, not really. Des also puts it to Peter that he has been very strong on the numbers, but a bit poo at conundrums. Bit harsh to point that out, especially as he's now only two victories short of octochampdom. Which I called it after his first game last week. Go me! Oh, and Peter, I guess.

I wouldn't normally want to boast about this as playing at home is completely different from playing in the studio, but from my very comfortable armchair I'd have done 119 out of 120, just missing PISCINAE in the first round.

Martin
If you cut a gandiseeg in half, do you get two gandiseegs or two halves of a gandiseeg?

Oops, I can't help but feel a little responsible for that. Sorry Peter :)
