Friday 6th March 2009 (Series 60, Game 25)

Post by Allan Harmer »

Countdown recap for Friday 6 March 2009.

C1: Champion Kirk Bevins (4 wins, 480 points.) Our very own dart-loving, Kylie loving, intrepid ghost-hunter. Jeff asks if Kirk if he would prefer to meet Phil The Power Taylor or Kylie Minogue? Kirk replies Kylie, to which Jeff retorts 'You should be so lucky Kirk!' ;)
C2: Challenger Barrie Robinson. A jazz, crosswords and sports fan whose favourite song is 'Every time we say goodbye', by Ella Fitzgerald. Or is it Gerald Fits Ella? - boom boom!
DC: Susie Dent and Dr Phil Hammond. Dr Phil is my favourite DC guest and I am envious that Kirk has had a whole week of him. Kirk and Phil have built up a great rapport with some lively banter all week so far.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

C1: SEASHORE (8)
C2: HASTE (5)

Round 14: 5, 8, 6, 4, 2, 25. Target: 792.

C1: 792. 25x8-2=198x4 (10)
C2: 792. 8x4=32x25=800-(6+2) (10)
Score: 101–39 (max 110)

Round 15: L A T I N M A D E

C1 buzzes on 0 seconds to say LAMINATED which is correct.
Score: 111–39 (max 120)

Kirk buzzes as soon as the letters appear and delivers the coup de grace to poor Barrie, who never looked at home in a game of this quality.

Well done Kirk. Another satisfactory ton, (111 = T20, 19 and D16), but it's not a darts score that we want, it's the coveted 147 max score in snooker that we are hoping for. Best wishes for the remaining games and I hope the letters and numbers are kind to you.

Thanks for another awesome recap, Allan. Just to let you know you have C1 and C2s words mixed up here. Well done for getting the 8 - I don't think I'd heard of it.

I don't think it's fair to blame Barrie for the one-sided game. Perhaps one of the stats buffs could work out how many of last season's players would have finished within - say - ten of Kirk. And as you point out, Barrie has watched the herd of elephants trample four unfortunate saps already and has nowhere to run to.

I'm not blaming Barrie at all Rosemary. My objective is purely to try and give the reader an impression of the game as I see it and Barrie looked very uncomfortable playing someone as good as Kirk, as would most mere mortals.

I have every sympathy for the poor chap, hence using the term coup de grace, alluding to the fact that this was the final blow to put him out of his misery. Before he came on the show he probably had visions of playing someone like Anne Abel and thought he was in with a fair chance of winning a teapot.

In fact, I had exactly the same thoughts in the last series until I came up against a certain Charlie Reams, esq. It's just the luck of the draw and poor Barrie certainly got the shitty end of the stick!

I like elephants. But I don't go and stand in thier way.

Not "calling", "likening to": you come across as incredibly hyped up, which is a bit scary. But maybe you will have calmed down a bit by next Monday.

Congrats on another win, Kirk! :)

I'm rationing out watching the shows because of the break for the racing (bloomin' sport! :( )
BTW, did you get a break in recordings, or were they still all done in a couple of days?

Not that I'm ever likely to be in the running for octochampdom, but playing so many games at once would be sure to knock me out.

I got JAPONICA too, Alan! :) 8-) (Kirk beat me 106 to 53 though  )

Since Colin Murray's doing Monday to Thursday next week, thus making the usual five in all, there was presumably no interruption to the recordings, only to the transmissions of the programmes.

This was the last show of the day. After some time in the bar with Rachel, Jeff, Susie, and co and one Box Pizza later (and a max checking session for Wednesday's game of course), Team Kirk retired for the night. This Monday's show and the Mon-Thu episodes of the next week were filmed the next day. Colin Murray features in DC for all of those. There was then a break in filming for a bit less than a month after this, so expect a different DC guest in next Friday's show.

It's good to hear Jeff, Rachel and Susie socialise in the bar afterwards, did Carol and Richard/Des/DesO do the same?

Richard always used to frequent the bar after recordings, even heat recordings. Carol didn't way back in 2001/2, oddly enough.

That's an experience most men would like to have, I think!
