Round 1: F I O E G T N M G

Sian: GNOME (5)
David: FEINT (5)
DC: FIGMENT (7) EMOTING (7)
OT: MITOGEN (7)
Score: 5–5 (max 7)

Our players start with a pair of 5, while DC start with a pair of 7's. :) :) :)

A MITOGEN is a substance that induces or stimulates mitosis.

Round 2: V T I L S U R E N

Sian: nutrile
David: LISTEN (6)
DC: SILENT (6) UTENSIL (7) VIRULENT (8)
OT: INSULTER (8) LUSTRINE (8) RIVULETS (8) UNRIVETS (8) VENTURIS (8)
Score: 5–11 (max 15)

Maybe she has mixed up NITRILE with nutrile, but unfortunately for Sian, it's not in.

LUSTRINE (or LUSTRING) is a glossy silk fabric, or a satin-weave fabric resembling it.
A VENTURI is a short piece of narrow tube between wider sections for measuring flow rate or exerting suction.

Round 3: 75, 2, 4, 6, 10, 1. Target: 837.

Sian: 837. ((10 + 1) x 75) + (6 x 2) (10)
David: 837. ((10 + 1) x 75) + (6 x 2) (10)
Score: 15–21 (max 25)

Simples.

Teatime teaser: AUNTMELBA -> UNTAMABLE

Round 4: W C E D A T U C I

Sian: CUTIE (5)
David: WAITED (6)
OT: CADUCEI (7)
Score: 15–27 (max 32)

David WAITED for that to come out, so he could double his lead. :P :P :P

A CADUCEUS (plural CADUCEI) is an ancient Greek or Roman herald's wand, typically one with two serpents twined round it, carried by the messenger god Hermes or Mercury.

Round 5: D E S M O I R K R

Sian: SMOKIER (7)
David: SMOKIER (7)
DC: IRKSOME (7) SMIRKED (7)
OT: MISORDER (8)
Score: 22–34 (max 40)

Now both our players seem to be SMOKIER than each other....

Round 6: 50, 1, 10, 6, 3, 2. Target: 712.

Sian: 712. ((10 + 3 + 1) x 50) + (6 x 2) (10)
David: 712. ((10 + 3 + 1) x 50) + (6 x 2) (10)
Score: 32–44 (max 50)

Simples once more...

Nina talks about how she has been adapting to the pandemic, and what she might stick with when "normality" resumes.

Round 7: T E A O H B R E N

Sian: abhorent
David: BREATHE (7)
DC: ANOTHER (7) BARONET (7)
OT: ABORTEE (7) BENEATH (7) EARTHEN (7) HEARTEN (7) REBOANT (7) RHENATE (7) THEREON (7)
Score: 32–51 (max 57)

I thought about it as the letters came out, but unfortunately, ABHORRENT does need 2 R's.

An ABORTEE is a woman who undergoes an induced abortion.
EARTHEN is an adjective meaning relating to or characteristic of the earth or material existence.
REBOANT is an adjective meaning resounding, reverberating; loudly echoing.
A RHENATE is a salt containing oxyanions of rhenium; specifically a salt of the anion ReO₄ 2−.

Round 8: P D A J O G U T O

Sian: TOAD (4)
David: outjog
OT: ADOPT (5) GADJO (5) OUTDO (5) OUTGO (5) PADOU (5) POOJA (5)
Score: 36–51 (max 62)

Outjog does sound a good word, I must admit, but it's not reached the dictionary yet...

In or with reference to Romani use, a GADJO is a non-Romani person.
A PADOU is a kind of silk tape or ribbon.
In Hinduism and Buddhism, POOJA (or PUJA) is the act of worship.

Round 9: 50, 1, 7, 10, 4, 5. Target: 621.

Sian: 615.
David: 622. ((7 + 5) x (50 + 1)) + 10 (7)
RR: 621. (4 + 5) x ((7 x 10) - 1) (10)
Score: 36–58 (max 72)

Very impressive small solve by Rach, but David regains control with his 1 away.

Teatime teaser: ROMEOTALK -> TOOLMAKER

Round 10: V A N D E R S I T

Sian: RANDIEST (8)
David: RANDIEST (8)
DC: INVADERS (8) DETRAINS (8)
OT: DEVIANTS (8) SANDIVER (8) STRAINED (8)
Score: 44–66 (max 80)

Moving swiftly on...

A SANDIVER is a scum that forms on molten glass.

Round 11: A R S Y E U S Q L

Sian: SQUARES (7)
David: SQUARELY (8)
DC: QUEASY (6)
Score: 44–74 (max 88)

Ouchy, ouchy, ouch, Sian sees the SQUARES, but David is SQUARELY with his offering, and he's closing in on victory.

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "litter" for use with animals.

Round 12: B N O P I W E C O

Sian: WINCE (5)
David: BONCE (5)
DC: WOOPIE (6)
OT: NOCEBO (6)
Score: 49–79 (max 94)

Nothing much good here, but that's only good news for David, as Sian needs a 9 to stay in the hunt....

A NOCEBO is a detrimental effect on health produced by psychological or psychosomatic factors such as negative expectations of treatment or prognosis.

Round 13: X A R S I E D C L

Sian: SLICED (6)
David: SCARED (6)
DC: SAILED (6) RADICLES (8)
OT: DESCRIAL (8) RADICELS (8)
Score: 55–85 (max 102)

But, it's not to be, as the 6's are enough to make David our new champion.

A DESCRIAL is the action or fact of descrying something or someone; especially discovery.
A RADICEL is a fine or fibrous root; a secondary or adventitious root, a rootlet.

Round 14: 25, 10, 9, 2, 6, 5. Target: 431.

Sian: 431. ((10 + 9 - 2) x 25) + 6 (10)
David: -
Score: 65–85 (max 112)

Well, David must've had a complete brain freeze there, but that'll make Sian a bit happier at least. :) :) :)

Round 15: T I N G L T I P S

David buzzes on 4.75 seconds to say SPLITTING which is correct.
Final Score: 65–95 (max 122)

But, who doesn't like getting the conundrum, as David takes it to wrap up the win, with a very healthy score of 95 :!: :!: :!:

So, last week, we had 1 person win all 5 shows. This week, we've had 5 different winners winning 1 show each :!: :!: :!: :P :P :P :o :o :o

Who knows what next week will bring?? See you soon... ;) :) :D
