Round 1: M R L E A I R S O

Jonny: MAILERS (7)
Sian: morales
DC: MORALE (6) LIARS (5) MORALISE (8) MORALISER (18)
Score: 7–0 (max 18)

Ouch, that's one way to start a match...., no morales for Sian, but there's MORALISE and even MORALISER for 9!!!

Round 2: P U E I K Y N B W

Jonny: puney
Sian: PINKY (5)
DC: PUNY (4) BUNYIP (6)
OT: PUNKIE (6)
Score: 7–5 (max 24)

A PUNKIE is a biting midge of the family Ceratopogonidae; a no-see-um.

Round 3: 75, 5, 9, 1, 10, 3. Target: 232.

Jonny: 232. ((75 + 1) x 3) + 5 - (10 - 9) (10)
Sian: 232. (3 x 75) + 10 - 9 + 1 + 5 (10)
Score: 17–15 (max 34)

Teatime teaser: INVITEDUS -> UNVISITED

Round 4: R A T E U S R C X

Jonny: CRATERS (7)
Sian: CURATES (7)
DC: TRACERS (7) CARTERS (7)
OT: TRACEURS (8)
Score: 24–22 (max 42)

A TRACEUR is a person who takes part in the activity of parkour or free running.

Round 5: N R B H I E A C S

Jonny: BRANCHES (8)
Sian: chainers
OT: CARBINES (8) INARCHES (8) REBANISH (8) RECHAINS (8)
Score: 32–22 (max 50)

Ouchy once more for Sian, as you can't be a chainer, but you can RECHAIN...

In horticulture, to INARCH is to graft (a plant) by connecting a growing branch without separating it from its parent stock.
To REBANISH is to banish again or for a further time.
To RECHAIN is to chain again (literal and figurative).

Round 6: 100, 8, 3, 2, 1, 1. Target: 794.

Jonny: 794. (8 x 100) - (3 x 2) (10)
Sian: 794. (8 x 100) - (3 x 2) (10)
Score: 42–32 (max 60)

Simples...

Nina talks about how she and her colleagues covered the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Round 7: N T D U I E N O R

Jonny: EDITOR (6)
Sian: ROUTINE (7)
DC: ROUTINED (8) NEUTRINO (8)
OT: INDENTOR (8) UNIRONED (8)
Score: 42–39 (max 68)

A good ROUTINE for Sian gets her back in, but she could've stuck the D on the end for ROUTINED...

An INDENTOR is someone who makes a dent or impression in something.

Round 8: Y E A O F M H E L

Jonny: FOAMY (5)
Sian: FLAME (5)
DC: FEMALE (6) FLAMEY (6)
OT: HOMELY (6) OYAMEL (6)
Score: 47–44 (max 74)

Another Sian word where a letter could've been stuck on the end there..., hopefully these won't be crucial later...

An OYAMEL is a large fir tree, Abies religiosa, found at high altitudes in Mexico, and used in carpentry and as a source of turpentine and balsamic medicinal oil.

Round 9: 100, 50, 4, 2, 10, 6. Target: 261.

Jonny: 264.
Sian: 260. ((10 x 50) / 2) + 6 + 4 (7)
RR: 261. ((100 x 10) + 50 - 6) / 4 (10)
Score: 47–51 (max 84)

Well, that's a gift for Sian, as Jonny somehow misses the super easy one away (although Sian's method is very unusual in the extreme too), but Rachel manages to solve the evens into an odd problem. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Teatime teaser: THISRATES -> TRASHIEST

Round 10: M E I P A Q D Z J

Jonny: MAIZE (5)
Sian: DIME (4)
DC: AIMED (5) AMPED (5)
OT: AMIDE (5) AZIDE (5) IMPED (5) JAPED (5) MAEDI (5) MAZED (5) MEDIA (5) PIZED (5) ZAIDE (5)
Score: 52–51 (max 89)

Loads of 5's, but Sian can't find one, so Jonny retakes the lead.

An AMIDE is an organic compound containing the group —C(O)NH₂, derived from ammonia by replacement of a hydrogen atom by an acyl group.
An AZIDE is a compound containing the anion N₃⁻ or the group —N₃.
A MAEDI is a form of progressive pneumonia in sheep, caused by a lentivirus.
To PIZE is to strike; specifically to hit a ball with the hand in the game of pize-ball.
In Jewish use, a ZAIDE (or ZAYDE) is one's grandfather.

Round 11: D R T O A V G E T

Jonny: grotted
Sian: TARGET (6)
DC: GAROTTED (8)
Score: 52–57 (max 97)

Now it's Jonny's turn to mess up a word, as he decides to spell/pronounce GAROTTED without the A....

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "snob".

Round 12: N S O I U R T P O

Jonny: PORTIONS (8)
Sian: TURNIPS (7)
DC: OUTSPIN (7)
OT: POSITRON (8) POTIRONS (8) PROTOSUN (8) RUPTIONS (8) SORPTION (8) TOURNOIS (8) UNIPORTS (8)
Score: 60–57 (max 105)

Plenty of 8's again, but Sian only pull up some TURNIPS, meaning the see-saw is back in motion and Jonny returns into the lead.

A POSITRON is a subatomic particle with the same mass as an electron and a numerically equal but positive charge.
A POTIRON is a kind of pumpkin, especially one with a flattened shape and orange skin.
A PROTOSUN is the sun at an early stage of its formation, before becoming dense enough to sustain nuclear reactions.
SORPTION is absorption and adsorption considered as a single process.
TOURNOIS is denoting a coin struck at Tours, which was one-fifth less in value than one coined at Paris.
A UNIPORT is the transport of a single species of ion or molecule in one direction across a biological membrane.

Round 13: C S D I E S L O T

Jonny: SLIDES (6)
Sian: COLDEST (7)
DC: DISSECT (7) DISCLOSE (8)
OT: SOLIDEST (8) SOLSTICE (8)
Score: 60–64 (max 113)

And the see-saw swings again, as Sian takes the COLDEST word to give herself a 4 point lead....

A SOLSTICE is the time or date (twice each year) at which the sun reaches its maximum or minimum declination, marked by the longest and shortest days (about 21 June and 22 December).

Round 14: 100, 5, 9, 3, 1, 7. Target: 394.

Jonny: 393.
Sian: 394. ((7 - 3) x 100) - (5 + 1) (10)
Score: 60–74 (max 123)

WOAH! WOAH!! WOAH!!! Well, that's a turn-up for the books, Jonny somehow can't solve the numbers, and Sian seals the win with a round to go    :o :o :o

Round 15: S U P E R T O A D

Jonny buzzes on 26.5 seconds to say UPROASTED which is incorrect.
Sian does not buzz.
The answer was OUTSPREAD.
Final Score: 60–74 (max 133)

Well, the conundrum doesn't go solved, which might be a relief to Jonny, but after defeating one Barnsley resident yesterday, he loses to another one today. :P :P :P

Certainly, that was an unusual game today, but Sian is the new champion, and we'll see if she can win another game tomorrow. 8-) 8-) 8-)
