Round 1: T R E A K T E V O

David: OVERTAKE (8)
Dick: OVERTAKE (8)
DC: RETAKE (6) TAKEOVER (8) OVEREAT (7)
Score: 8–8 (max 8)

An easy OVERTAKE for both players here. ;) :) :D

Round 2: L I F E X O N A S

David: FELONS (6)
Dick: flexions
DC: FLEXION (7) FLIES (5) NOISE (5) FINALES (7)
OT: SILOXANE (8)
Score: 14–8 (max 16)

Ouch, I thought flexions sounded good, but it can't be pluralised unfortunately for Dick. :(

A SILOXANE is a compound having a molecular structure based on a chain of alternate silicon and oxygen atoms, especially (as in silicone) with organic groups attached to the silicon atoms.

Round 3: 100, 8, 9, 1, 2, 9. Target: 788.

David: 788. (100 x 8) - (9 + 1 + 2) (10)
Dick: 788. (100 x 8) - (9 + 1 + 2) (10)
Score: 24–18 (max 26)

Straightforwards numbers here. :)

Teatime teaser: VERADROWN -> OVERDRAWN

Round 4: J I G C E N A D E

David: GAINED (6)
Dick: ceeding
DC: CEDING (6) JADING (6) ENCAGED (7)
OT: ADIENCE (7)
Score: 30–18 (max 33)

Oh dear, you can't spell CEDING that way, I'm afraid....

ADIENCE is the tendency to seek out or maximize the impact of a stimulus.

Round 5: T N I E D S O T U

David: OUTSIDE (7)
Dick: DENTIST (7)
DC: STENT (5) STINT (5) STINTED (7) TEDIOUS (7)
OT: DUETTINOS (18)
Score: 37–25 (max 51)

7 certainly seems to be the order of the day (unless you're Fern, in which case, 5 will suffice), but there's a fab NINE in the selection. 8-) 8-) 8-)

A DUETTINO is a short duet.

Round 6: 25, 9, 9, 1, 3, 6. Target: 185.

David: 185. ((9 - 1) x 25) - 9 - 6 (10)
Dick: 185. ((9 - 1) x 25) - 9 - 6 (10)
Score: 47–35 (max 61)

Easy numbers again. :D

Fern talks about the weird words her children invented.

Round 7: R E H D A V O E W

David: OVERHEAD (8)
Dick: HAVERED (7)
DC: HOVERED (7) WAVERED (7)
OT: OVERAWED (8) REAVOWED (8)
Score: 55–35 (max 69)

A great 8 from David extends his lead to 20 points, as we approach halfway.

Round 8: R I S O M E C F A

David: FOAMIER (7)
Dick: forces (declared as 7)
DC: FORCES (6) SCREAM (6) CASEIFORM (18)
Score: 62–35 (max 87)

Oops, David thinks FORCES is a 7...., but DC go top trumps with a superb 9. :geek: :geek: :geek:

Round 9: 75, 6, 5, 8, 9, 6. Target: 650.

David: 650. (75 x 8) + (((6 / 6) + 9) x 5) (10)
Dick: 649.
Score: 72–35 (max 97)

David's now pulling away nicely, surely octochampdom is his now...

Teatime teaser: ELDESTNUT -> UNSETTLED

Round 10: D U S O D E T A S

David: SADDEST (7)
Dick: SADDEST (7)
DC: DUSTED (6) OUSTED (6) TOSSED (6)
OT: ADUSTED (7)
Score: 79–42 (max 104)

Definitely is the SADDEST day today, knowing what we know.... :( :(

ADUSTED (or ADUST) is an archaic adjective meaning scorched or burnt.

Round 11: C R O I L T A L E

David: EROTIC (6)
Dick: collater
DC: RECOIL (6) CORALLITE (18)
Score: 85–42 (max 122)

David might've forgot to stick the A onto EROTIC, but Dick can't give the correct spelling of COLLATOR, so the game's almost up.

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of some common words with unusual origins, such as "bra".

Round 12: U S O Y N E P R I

David: PONIES (6)
Dick: SENIOR (6)
DC: peonys PEONY (5) PRISON (6) PERSON (6) URSINE (6) SOUPIER (7)
OT: PRUINOSE (8) PYRENOUS (8)
Score: 91–48 (max 130)

And that's OCTOCHAMPDOM SECURED for David thanks to some PONIES. ;) :) :D  8-)

PRUINOSE is an adjective meaning covered with white powdery granules; frosted in appearance.
PYRENOUS is an adjective meaning a fruit containing pyrenes, a crystalline aromatic hydrocarbon present in coal tar. :o

Round 13: N E B I R Y A S L

David: BINARY (6)
Dick: BRAINS (6)
DC: BRAINY (6) LESBIAN (7) BARNEYS (7)
OT: BILAYERS (8) BLARNEYS (8) BREYANIS (8) INLAYERS (8)
Score: 97–54 (max 138)

Appropriately, some BINARY BRAINS on show here... :P :P

A BILAYER is a film two molecules thick (formed e.g. by lipids), in which each molecule is arranged with its hydrophobic end directed inwards towards the opposite side of the film and its hydrophilic end directed outwards.
To BLARNEY is to influence or persuade someone using charm and pleasant flattery.
BREYANI is a South African version of BIRYANI, an Indian dish made with highly seasoned rice and meat, fish, or vegetables.

Round 14: 25, 75, 6, 7, 3, 2. Target: 646.

David: 646. ((6 + 2) x 75) + (3 x 7) + 25 (10)
Dick: -
Score: 107–54 (max 148)

Now that's a great solve by David, especially as Rachel seemed bamboozled at which way he was going at first :!: :!:  :geek: :ugeek:

Round 15: U R C H I N C O G

David buzzes on 10.25 seconds to say CROUCHING which is correct.
Final Score: 117–54 (max 158)

And he finishes off by breaking his personal best from 2 days ago too. :D :D :D

And so, David becomes the 5th octochamp of the series, and as mentioned yesterday, he stays at #5 on the leaderboard with his octototal of 732 points. So, we look forward to seeing him return for the finals whenever that may be....

So, now as Nick said himself, "We'll see you soon....", when soon is though, we just don't know, but in the meantime, for the next 8 weeks, the 30th Birthday Championship from 2013 will be repeated, so it starts on Monday with Tom Hargreaves v Nicki Sellars. ;) :) :D

So for now, stay home, stay safe, and hopefully, Series 82 will resume ASAP. ;) :) :D  8-) :geek: :ugeek:

Till then, this is James Robinson, recapping out. :( :( :(
