Enjoy the show.

Round 1: C Y E I T P A R N

David: PAINTER (7)
Steve: PARITY (6)
DC: PERTAIN (7)
OT: PERTINACY (18)
Score: 7–0 (max 18)

David brushes up to take the lead from the off, while a NINE hides in the selection.

PERTINACY (or PERTINACITY or PERTINACIOUS) is an adjective meaning holding firmly to an opinion or a course of action.

Round 2: S Y R I U T F O Z

David: FROSTY (6)
Steve: FRUITS (6)
OT: STORIFY (7)
Score: 13–6 (max 25)

A very tricky set of letters around here, but there was a 7 hidden in there....

To STORIFY is to represent or recount as or in a story; to make a story of.

Round 3: 50, 3, 10, 5, 10, 7. Target: 466.

David: 465. Mistake in working.
Steve: 467. ((50 - 3) x 10) - (10 - 7) (7)
RR: 466. ((50 + 3) x 7) - 5 + (10 x 10) (10)
Score: 13–13 (max 35)

This was certainly trickier than it seemed, and it causes David to make a mistake, letting Steve level the match, while Rachel solves it after the break.

Teatime teaser: PLAGUELIP -> PUPILLAGE

Round 4: E A U S T G O V N

David: stoven
Steve: ATONES (6)
DC: NOVATES (7) VAGUEST (7)
OT: GAVONES (7) NOUGATS (7) ONSTAGE (7) OUTAGES (7) OUTGAVE (7) OUTSANG (7) SOUTANE (7) TANGOES (7) TONGUES (7) VOGUEST (7)
Score: 13–19 (max 42)

7's aplenty, but it's just 6's for the players, but David's isn't in, so Steve takes a surprise lead.

A GAVONE (or CAFONE or CAFFONE) is a labourer; a peasant, especially one who is Italian or of Italian descent.

Round 5: R W A I S R E B D

David: braiders
Steve: BRAISED (7)
DC: WARBIRDS (8)
Score: 13–26 (max 50)

Well, I was also certain that braiders (and even rebraids) was in, shows what I know :!: :!: :o :o Shame for David there...

Round 6: 100, 6, 9, 7, 3, 4. Target: 674.

David: 674. ((100 - 3) x 7) - (9 - 4) (10)
Steve: 673.
Score: 23–26 (max 60)

Well, that will make David feel a lot better. :)

Nicki talks about her volunteer work at a local charity shop.

Round 7: H R O S A M I T N

David: RATIONS (7)
Steve: RATIOS (6)
DC: HARMONIST (18)
OT: ANTHORISM (18)
Score: 30–26 (max 78)

And David takes the lead, as Steve forgets to stick the N in his RATIOS...., but DC find a top notch 9. 8-)

An ANTHORISM is a description or definition that counters that given by an opposing party; the action of countering the opposing party in this way.

Round 8: S C N A E T U O M

David: AMOUNTS (7)
Steve: AMOUNTS (7)
DC: COSTUME (7) MUCONATES (18)
Score: 37–33 (max 96)

Back-to-back 9's for DC, but the AMOUNTS are good enough for our players here. :)

Round 9: 75, 9, 9, 4, 10, 3. Target: 868.

David: 868. Mistake in working.
Steve: 860. Mistake in working.
RR: 868. ((75 x 3) - (9 + 9 - 10)) x 4 (10)
Score: 37–33 (max 106)

Oh dear, oh dear, another tricky numbers game, and it causes both players to mess it up....

Teatime teaser: EVERSLOPE -> SLEEPOVER

Round 10: I E C T A Q E V T

David: ACTIVE (6)
Steve: ACTIVE (6)
OT: AETITE (6) CITATE (6) VITTAE (6)
Score: 43–39 (max 112)

This round seems like what the rest of the show has been, but this one actually only has 6 as the max!! :P :P

An AETITE (or AETITES) is a hollow nodule or pebble of hydrated iron oxide containing a loose kernel that makes a noise when rattled, formerly regarded as having medicinal and magical properties.
A VITTA (plural VITTAE) is a botanical term for an oil tube in the fruit of some plants, or a zoological term for a band or stripe of colour.

Round 11: M P O I L N E J C

David: COMPILE (7)
Steve: POLICE (6)
DC: COMPLINE (8)
Score: 50–39 (max 120)

David now extends his lead into double figures thanks to that 7.

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "McGuffin".

Round 12: K D L A E I G N O

David: DEALING (7)
Steve: LOADING (7)
DC: GODLIKE (7)
OT: ADINOLE (7) AKINDLE (7) ALIGNED (7) DEALIGN (7) DOGLIKE (7) GEOIDAL (7) KNAIDEL (7) LEADING (7) LEAKING (7) LINKAGE (7) OAKLING (7)
Score: 57–46 (max 127)

7's aplenty in this one. 8-)

An ADINOLE is a hard, fine-grained rock, rich in albite, resulting from contact metamorphism of shales, slates, etc.
GEOIDAL relates to GEOID, a hypothetical solid figure whose surface corresponds to mean sea level and its imagined extension under (or over) land areas.
A KNAIDEL (or KNEIDEL) is a type of dumpling eaten in Jewish households during Passover.
LINKAGE is the tendency of groups of genes on the same chromosome to be inherited together.
An OAKLING is a small or young oak tree; an oak sapling.

Round 13: D E S R A P E L C

David: REPLACED (8)
Steve: PARCELS (7)
DC: RELAPSED (8) PLEADERS (8) RECLASPED (18)
Score: 65–46 (max 145)

David's nearly there, as DC find their third 9 of the game, but in an amazing coincidence, just like yesterday, David's lead with 2 rounds to go is 19 points... :o 8-)

Round 14: 75, 4, 5, 3, 3, 6. Target: 128.

David: 128. ((4 + 6) x 5) + 75 + 3 (10)
Steve: 130.
Score: 75–46 (max 155)

Unlike yesterday, Steve isn't interested in changing his mind after Rachel's offer, and it probes to be the final nail in the coffin for him.

Round 15: D I S H C H E E R

Steve buzzes on 1.5 seconds to say CHERISHED which is correct.
Final Score: 75–56 (max 165)

Well, Steve does at least get the conundrum to soften the blow a little bit. :)

So, Steve has 3 wins, and if he wins all 5 shows next week, he'll become the 5th octochamp of this series. 8-)

As you all know, next week's shows will be the last new shows for a while, so let's see if Steve can give us something nice to leave us with, when the shows goes into hibernation. ;) :) :D
