Round 1: C A G S M E O L U

Annie: cagouls
Roy: CAGOULES (8)
OT: LEUCOMAS (8) MACULOSE (8) MOULAGES (8)
Score: 0–8 (max 8)

Ouchy, very unlucky for Annie, as the singular of CAGOULES is either CAGOULE or KAGOUL.... :? :? :?

MACULOSE is an adjective meaning marked with maculae; spotted.
A MOULAGE is a cast or impression, especially of a person or a part of the body; the process of making a cast or taking an impression.

Round 2: T E D I N O Y A N

Annie: TANNOYED (8)
Roy: ANNOYED (7)
OT: ANOINTED (8) ANTINODE (8)
Score: 8–8 (max 16)

Woah, a role reversal as Roy's word is knocked off by Annie's additional letter....

Round 3: 50, 4, 3, 6, 4, 10. Target: 745.

Annie: 746. ((50 + 3) x (10 + 4)) + 4 (7)
Roy: -
Score: 15–8 (max 23)

Well, Annie has got back into her stride with her 1 away, which happens to be the nearest to the target. 8-)

Teatime teaser: LACYEDGE -> DELEGACY

Round 4: P E S O D I R U Q

Annie: POURED (6)
Roy: SQUIRED (7)
DC: QUIPS (5) PERIODS (7)
OT: PERIODUS (8) QUERIDOS (8)
Score: 15–15 (max 31)

This game is certainly toing and froing, with Roy equalising straight away.

A PERIODUS is a sentence or passage made from a number of clauses; the pause after such a sentence.
In Spanish-speaking contexts a QUERIDO is a male sweetheart, a darling.

Round 5: T R H E A N I G O

Annie: EARTHING (8)
Roy: HEARING (7)
DC: HEATING (7) HEARTING (8)
OT: INGATHER (8) ORANGITE (8) OTHERING (8)
Score: 23–15 (max 39)

Annie regains her lead immediately thanks to unEARTHING an 8. :)

ORANGITE is an orange-yellow variety of thorite.

Round 6: 100, 8, 1, 7, 5, 6. Target: 617.

Annie: 616. (100 x 6) + 8 + 1 + 7 (7)
Roy: 616. (100 x 6) + 8 + 1 + 7 (7)
RR: 617. ((8 - 7 + 1 + 100) x 6) + 5 (10)
Score: 30–22 (max 49)

Both players get one away, as they miss the trick for a full 10 points....

Charlie talks about his fascination with Tarzan.

Round 7: D T W A E S I F M

Annie: WAISTED (7)
Roy: WAFTED (6)
DC: WASTED (6) MISDATE (7)
Score: 37–22 (max 56)

Annie's word isn't WASTED, but it's WAISTED, which is heaven for seven. 8-)

Round 8: T V U O N S E I T

Annie: INVEST (6)
Roy: INVEST (6)
DC: TUNES (5) OUTSET (6) OUTSENT (7)
OT: ENVIOUS (7) NIVEOUS (7) OUTVIES (7) TENUTOS (7) TIENTOS (7) TONIEST (7) VEINOUS (7)
Score: 43–28 (max 63)

Time for a double INVESTment, but maybe in some 7's, of which there are plenty in this round....

NIVEOUS is a literary adjective meaning snowy or resembling snow.
To OUTVIE is to outdo in competition or rivalry.
In 16th- and 17th-century Spanish music, a TIENTO is a contrapuntal piece resembling a ricercar, originally for strings and later for organ.

Round 9: 25, 7, 6, 4, 8, 10. Target: 874.

Annie: 876. (25 x 4 x 8) + (7 x 10) + 6 (7)
Roy: -
RR: 874. ((7 + 4) x 8 x 10) - 6 (10)
Score: 50–28 (max 73)

Another tricky numbers game outfoxes the former maths professor, and another 7 points for Annie sees her edge closer and closer to her 5th win.

Teatime teaser: AHALIBUT -> HABITUAL

Round 10: M A T O R E G U J

Annie: OUTRAGE (7)
Roy: GOURMET (7)
DC: ORATE (5)
Score: 57–35 (max 80)

Both available 7's are picked by the players. Roy still needs to try and find something to claw back the deficit....

Round 11: S N T O E A B M N

Annie: BONNETS (7)
Roy: BONNETS (7)
DC: STEAM (5) STONE (5) BOATMEN (7) BOATSMEN (8) ENTOMBS (7)
OT: MANBOTES (8)
Score: 64–42 (max 88)

A lovely pair of BONNETS picked up by both players, but there a lovely pair of 8's available too. 8-)

A MANBOTE (or MANBOT) is a fine to be paid to an overlord as compensation for the killing of a man under his authority.

Susie's Origins of Words talks about the origins of some restaurant terms.

Round 12: T D L U A E R S P

Annie: PULSATED (8)
Roy: peruse
DC: PERUSAL (7) PALES (5) ADULTERS (8)
OT: PASTURED (8) SPLURTED (8)
Score: 72–42 (max 96)

That might be the killer blow for Annie here....

Round 13: N S L S I U I Z R

Annie: SLURS (5)
Roy: SIN (3)
OT: NIRLS (5) NISUS (5) NURLS (5) RUINS (5) SINUS (5) SUNIS (5)
Score: 77–42 (max 101)

A horrible final letters game emerges, and Roy sort of makes a SIN, by not pluralising SIN for SINS, but luckily Annie's SLURS seal her win #5.

Round 14: 75, 8, 3, 2, 2, 6. Target: 573.

Annie: 573. ((75 - 3) x 8) - (6 / 2) (10)
Roy: 574.
Score: 87–42 (max 111)

Another numbers masterclass from Annie. Clearly, Roy's maths skills have been left at the university today.....

Round 15: M E N C H O O B Y

Roy buzzes on 22.5 seconds to say HONEYCOMB which is correct.
Final Score: 87–52 (max 121)

A great solve by Roy, which sort of reminds me of my recent TV show recording of Hive Minds, which you will see in September. ;) :) :D

But, in the meantime, Annie now has 5 wins under her belt, and will certainly be looking for a full house.

Join Anthony tomorrow to see if she will make it a super 6.

There's no episodes next Wednesday and Thursday, so I'll be back on 24th August.

Till then, bye for now. ;) :) :D
