Round 1: R L T C A I E G L

Antoinette: ARTICLE (7)
Mark: ALLERGIC (8)
Score: 0–8 (max 8)

A superb start from Mark with a darrenic 8, I wonder if Antoinette will get a reaction out of that :!: :P

Round 2: U E I N L M S O E

Antoinette: MOULINS (7)
Mark: EMULSION (8)
OT: MELUSINE (8) MESOLINE (8) SELENIUM (8)
Score: 0–16 (max 16)

Well, if she did, it was clearly an allergic reaction to 8's, as Mark doubles his lead Tommy Cooper style. :P ;)

MELUSINE is a silky, long-haired felt, used for making hats.
MESOLINE is a white granular aluminosilicate of the zeolite group, occurring on the Faroe Islands and now thought to be either levyne, chabazite, or a variety of thomsonite.

Round 3: 10, 8, 1, 4, 3, 8. Target: 858.

Antoinette: 854. Mistake in working.
Mark: -
RR: 856. (7)
OT: 856. (((8 + 3) x 10) + 1 - 4) x 8 (7)
Score: 0–16 (max 23)

Antoinette decides to go for broke early doors with a 6 small, which although it immobilises Mark, she can't take advantage either, as she can't get her 854 from paper to board, but Rachel can only get to 2 away from the target, as we have yet another impossible 6 small in this CoC.....

Teatime teaser: ONECRISP -> CONSPIRE

Round 4: R Z O A E I R B T

Antoinette: BRAZIER (7)
Mark: ORBITER (7)
DC: RAREBIT (7)
OT: ABORTER (7) ARBITER (7) BIZARRE (7) BIZARRO (7)
Score: 7–23 (max 30)

An ABORTER is quite simply, a person who performs an abortion.
BIZARRO is a North American version of BIZARRE.... :P :P

Round 5: S R L V E A O I S

Antoinette: VALORISES (18)
Mark: VALORISES (18)
DC: RISSOLE (7)
OT: OVERSAILS (18)
Score: 25–41 (max 48)

After VALORISED appeared yesterday, quite interesting seeing VALORISES today, but it's a simple 18 points each for our players here. :D :D :D

Round 6: 75, 100, 25, 7, 4, 3. Target: 776.

Antoinette: 776. (7 x 100) + 75 + 4 - 3 (10)
Mark: 776. (7 x 100) + 75 + 4 - 3 (10)
Score: 35–51 (max 58)

A simple 3 large keeps Antoinette in range for now....

John talks about the heroic exploits of Canadian sailor Lawrence Lemieux, who gave up a certain silver medal to rescue 2 peoples' lives during the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, and was awarded with the Pierre de Coubertin medal for his bravery.

Round 7: F L T S U E I A D

Antoinette: FAULTED (7)
Mark: FEUDALIST (18)
Score: 35–69 (max 76)

WOAH! WOAH!! WOAH!!! WHAT A HAMMERBLOW FROM MARK!!!   :o :o :o A sweet 2nd 9 from him gives him a mega lead, which will be hard for Antoinette to recover from....

Round 8: V R G E I O U C M

Antoinette: VOICER (6)
Mark: MORGUE (6)
DC: GRIME (5) GROVE (5)
OT: CERIUM (6) CORIUM (6) ERUVIM (6) MEVROU (6) VIGOUR (6) VOGUER (6)
Score: 41–75 (max 82)

A pair of 6's gets us back down to Earth. :)

ERUVIM is the plural of ERUV, an urban area enclosed by a wire boundary which symbolically extends the private domain of Jewish households into public areas, permitting activities within it that are normally forbidden in public on the Sabbath.
A MEVROUW (or MEVROU) is a courteous form of address to a married Dutch or Afrikaans woman; ‘madam’, ‘mistress’.

Round 9: 8, 3, 4, 1, 7, 9. Target: 579.

Antoinette: 579. ((1 + 7) x 8 x 9) + 3 (10)
Mark: 579. (9 x 8 x (7 + 1)) + 3 (10)
Score: 51–85 (max 92)

Antoinette goes for 6 small, but both she and Mark are on it, and her chances of progressing are getting slimmer and slimmer now.....

Teatime teaser: GROTBAGS -> BOGGARTS

Round 10: P T X E O N P D A

Antoinette: NOTEPAD (7)
Mark: PANTED (6)
DC: TONEPAD (7) PEDANT (6)
Score: 58–85 (max 99)

Well, maybe I spoke too soon. Antoinette notes on her NOTEPAD and that's 7 points to her.

Round 11: M R N A A O E D A

Antoinette: ROADMAN (7)
Mark: ADENOMA (7)
DC: ARMADA (6)
OT: MADRONA (7) MANDORA (7) MANDORE (7) MARDANA (7) MONARDA (7) MOREANA (7) RAMONDA (7) ROADMEN (7)
Score: 65–92 (max 106)

Loads of new 7's available here, but our players stick to 2 tried and tested ones. :D

A MANDORA (or MANDOLA) is an early stringed instrument of the mandolin or cittern type.
In India, a MARDANA is the part of a house reserved for the habitation of men, to which women are usually not admitted.
MONARDA is any of various aromatic North American plants constituting the genus Monarda (family Lamiaceae (Labiatae)).
Especially among speakers of the Sotho languages in South Africa, a MOREANA is a title of or respectful form of address used to a chief or (more generally) any person in authority.
RAMONDA is a plant of the genus Gesneriaceae comprising three species of perennial herbaceous plants found in mountainous regions of Europe, having a basal rosette of hairy leaves and lilac or violet flowers.

Susie's Origins of Words talks about the origins of the word "geek".

Round 12: T W O U I E T A R

Antoinette: OUTWAIT (7)
Mark: OUTWEAR (7)
DC: OUTWRITE (8)
Score: 72–99 (max 114)

It's all OUT here!! OUTWAIT and OUTWEAR from the players, whilst DC OUTWRITE with their darrenic 8. 8-)

Round 13: K S P Q O A O I E

Antoinette: POKIES (6)
Mark: OKAPIS (6)
DC: POOKAS (6)
OT: OOPSIE (6) QIPAOS (6) SOAPIE (6)
Score: 78–105 (max 120)

Luckily, pookies wasn't in for either player, but Mark's OKAPIS see him safely through to Tuesday's quarter-final.

A QIPAO is a type of dress traditionally worn by Chinese women, typically having a high mandarin collar, a split skirt, and a fitted bodice with an asymmetrical closure extending from the neck to the right underarm.

Round 14: 75, 50, 4, 2, 1, 9. Target: 219.

Antoinette: 219. (4 x 50) + (2 x 9) + 1 (10)
Mark: 219. (4 x 50) + (2 x 9) + 1 (10)
Score: 88–115 (max 130)

Simple 2 large to finish off the numbers action today. :)

Round 15: T U B A S T A R S

Mark buzzes on 23.5 seconds to say SUBSTRATA which is correct.
Final Score: 88–125 (max 140)

And a great conundrum solve by Mark gives him a fab 125 score and gives him a "Champion of 2014" matchup with Dan McColm in the final quarter-final on Tuesday. A shame for Antoinette, who couldn't claw back the gap after being 16-0 down right at the start.

So, the quarter-finals start tomorrow, and in my next recap, I'll recapping the semi-final between the winners of the first 2 quarters, so it'll be Tom Cappleman/Giles Hutchings v Andy Platt/Dylan Taylor.

What's your money on I wonder :? :?:

So, see you next week. Till then, enjoy the action, it's WELL AWESOME :!: :!: :!: ;) :) :D  8-)

Bye for now. :geek: :ugeek:
