Round 1: R L W A I O N A E

Jonathan: AILERON (7)
Steve: WAILER (6)
DC: AEOLIAN (7)
OT: ALIENOR (7)
Score: 7–0 (max 7)

The great recent classic from Jonathan gets him off the mark immediately today. :)

Round 2: T O D A E R P I G

Jonathan: PODGIER (7)
Steve: operated (declared as 7 too..... )
DC: PORTAGED (8)
Score: 14–0 (max 15)

Oh dear, a double blunder by Steve, as he declares an 8 as a 7, which has 2 E's when only one is in the selection.... He then said he had PIRATED written down, but decided to say the other word instead.....

Round 3: 50, 8, 4, 7, 10, 8. Target: 137.

Jonathan: 137. ((10 - 7) x (50 - 4)) - (8 / 8) (10)
Steve: 138.
Score: 24–0 (max 25)

Jonathan decides to go a long-winded way, but maybe that's the maths teacher's way is just that. :P :P

Teatime teaser: NIGELRAY -> YEARLING

Round 4: T S E U B Q A E N

Jonathan: BANQUETS (8)
Steve: UNSEAT (6)
DC: BEQUEST (7) BASQUE (6)
Score: 32–0 (max 33)

Some lovely BANQUETS for Jonathan, with Steve's score still on zero for now.....

Round 5: R L F I E V A M I

Jonathan: MAILER (6)
Steve: MARVEL (6)
DC: FLAMER (6) FLAMIER (7)
OT: FILMIER (7) VIREMIA (7)
Score: 38–6 (max 40)

A MARVEL for Steve who gets off the mark at last, but Gyles goes FLAMIER in DC with a 7.

Especially of fabric, something that is FILMY is thin and translucent.

Round 6: 50, 4, 10, 4, 9, 1. Target: 520.

Jonathan: 520. ((4 / 4) + 1 + 50) x 10 (10)
Steve: 520. ((4 / 4) + 1 + 50) x 10 (10)
Score: 48–16 (max 50)

Simple numbers here. NEXT

Gyles reads a poem full with euphemisms. :P

Round 7: R H D O O S E A N

Jonathan: senorha
Steve: ONSHORED (8)
Score: 48–24 (max 58)

A slightly unfortunate misspelling by Jonathan is overlooked by an impressive new addition for 8 from Steve. 8-)

Round 8: K T X O U E I R S

Jonathan: ROUTES (6)
Steve: tories
OT: OUSTER (6) OUTERS (6) OUTIES (6) OXTERS (6) RESTIO (6) ROUSIE (6) SORTIE (6) SOUTER (6) STOKER (6) STRIKE (6) STROKE (6) SUITOR (6) TOKERS (6) TRIKES (6) TRIOSE (6) TUSKER (6)
Score: 54–24 (max 64)

Plenty of 6's, but not the Tories from Steve. I wonder if he thought of that from Gyles being in DC :?: :?

A RESTIO is wiry rush- or reed-like plant of southern Africa, used for thatching and brooms. (Genus Restio, family Restionaceae)
A ROUSIE is an Australian/New Zealand person performing unskilled labour or doing odd jobs on a farm, especially in a shearing shed.

Round 9: 50, 2, 10, 10, 4, 2. Target: 173.

Jonathan: 172. ((50 - 10) x 4) + 10 + 2 (7)
Steve: 174. ((50 - (2 + 2)) x 4) - 10 (7)
RR: 173. ((((2 x 10) + 50) x 10) / 4) - 2 (10)
Score: 61–31 (max 74)

With no odds here, a tricky task, and even Rach needs extra time to solve this teaser.........

Teatime teaser: RAINSLUG -> SINGULAR

Round 10: D M P A I E R O G

Jonathan: IDEOGRAM (8)
Steve: PRIMED (6)
DC: GRAM (4) EPIGRAM (7)
Score: 69–31 (max 82)

An impressive 8 there from Jonathan even trumps Gyles' 7. 8-)

Round 11: L D B A I O N T E

Jonathan: DELATION (8)
Steve: bidental
OT: OBTAINED (8)
Score: 77–31 (max 90)

Bidental is certainly a perfectly decent shout from Steve, but Jonathan is just getting further and further away now......

Susie's Origins of Words talks about the origins of "ambrosia".

Round 12: R G M E I E S F A

Jonathan: REGIMES (7)
Steve: REGIMES (7)
DC: FREESIA (7)
OT: EMIGRES (7) FAERIES (7) IMAGERS (7) MEAGRES (7) MIRAGES (7) REMIGES (7) SEAMIER (7) SERFAGE (7) SERIEMA (7)
Score: 84–38 (max 97)

Plenty of 7's here, as Jonathan is closing in on that finishing line.....

SERFAGE relates to SERF, an agricultural labourer bound by the feudal system who was tied to working on his lord’s estate.
A SERIEMA (or CARIAMA) is a large ground-dwelling South American bird related to the bustards, with a long neck and legs and a crest above the bill. (Family Cariamidae)

Round 13: W T R I U E D T O

Jonathan: OUTRIDE (7)
Steve: OUTRIDE (7)
DC: DOTTIER (7)
OT: OUTDREW (7) TUTORED (7) WIDEOUT (7)
Score: 91–45 (max 104)

Jonathan gets the game over with his 7. Can he get yet another century, I wonder :? :?:

Round 14: 100, 8, 5, 2, 3, 5. Target: 613.

Jonathan: 613. (3 x 2 x 100) + 8 + 5 (10)
Steve: 613. (3 x 2 x 100) + 8 + 5 (10)
Score: 101–55 (max 114)

Another simple numbers gives Jonathan his 3rd century, but can he get his first conundrum :? :?:

Round 15: F A I R Y G I N T

Jonathan buzzes on 1 second to say RATIFYING which is correct.
Final Score: 111–55 (max 124)

YOU BET HE CAN :!: :!: :!: ;) :) :D

A super quick conundrum solve highlights the brilliant form by Jonathan today, despite the SENHORA spelling issue (which was irrelevant anyways).

Hopefully next week, I'll be back here recapping his 8th game, where he could just be the 2nd octochamp of the series. 8-)

Join Tracey tomorrow to see if Jonathan can be a half-octochamp, while Greg Rusedski enters the DC chair.

Till then, bye for now. ;) :) :D

Even if we're to suppress our gag reflexes and treat OUTWRITED as a valid word, I think it's probably a little unfair to count it as a missed max for Jonathan and Steve, as we know that it wouldn't have been in ODO at the time this game was played.
