Round 1: P W R O I A T D P

Nathan: RAPID (5)
Andrew: PAIR (4)
DC: PAROTID (7) TORPID (6)
Score: 5–0 (max 7)

It’s a RAPID start to his countdown career for Pace as he takes a five point lead. DC get the max with PAROTID

Round 2: E K W S A E D O V

Nathan: AVOWED (6)
Andrew: SOAKED (6)
DC: EVOKES (6) SKEWED (6) EVADES (6)
OT: EVOKED (6) VADOSE (6) VODKAS (6) WEAVED (6) WEAVES (6)
Score: 11–6 (max 13)

Ten sixes here and both spot one enabling Andrew to get on the score board. VODKAS was the best six there methinks.

Round 3: 6, 4, 4, 7, 3, 50. Target: 541.

Nathan: 541. ((7+4)*50)-(6+3) (10)
Andrew: 540.
Score: 21–6 (max 23)

Nathan continues to set the Pace in this game as he solves the numbers game to take a 15 point lead.

Teatime teaser: IGETATAD -> AGITATED

Round 4: N S P A E R T U L

Nathan: PARENTS (7)
Andrew: SPARE (5)
DC: REPLANTS (8) NEUTRALS (8)
OT: PLANTERS (8) PURSLANE (8) SUPERNAL (8)
Score: 28–6 (max 31)

Nathan is two better than Andrew in this round and is now 22 points ahead. There were some eights however and DC tell us two of them.

Round 5: M N L E I E R N Z

Nathan: LEER (4)
Andrew: MINER (5)
DC: LIMNER (6) LINEMEN (7)
Score: 28–11 (max 38)

Andrew beats Nathan for the first time in the game. He is still well off the Pace however and will need a strong comeback to have any chance.

Round 6: 7, 1, 3, 9, 75, 100. Target: 451.

Nathan: -
Andrew: -
RR: 451. ((9-3)*75)+1 (10)
Score: 28–11 (max 48)

Aagh!!! Both contestants miss a simple one. Andrew (understandably given the score) looks to be the one most annoyed with himself.

DC Guest – Richard speaks of having interviewed Mariah Carey in Las Vegas which ended with him getting a photo with her.

Round 7: D T S I A E H L Q

Nathan: LASTED (6)
Andrew: HEADS (5)
DC: HALIDES (7) DILATES (7)
OT: DETAILS (7) LATEISH (7)
Score: 34–11 (max 55)

Nathan looks well on course to take the game as he wins another round.

Round 8: D G T I U O G N A

Nathan: AGOUTI (6)
Andrew: DATING (6)
DC: GOADING (7)
OT: DOUTING (7) GIGATON (7)
Score: 40–17 (max 62)

AGOUTI from Nathan which suggests he is a big countdown fan. DATING from Andrew which is perhaps appropriate for someone in his age range.

Round 9: 8, 5, 8, 5, 2, 100. Target: 688.

Nathan: 687. ((5+2)*100)-(8+5) (7)
Andrew: 680.
RR: 688. (100-((8/2)+5+5))*8 (10)
Score: 47–17 (max 72)

Nathan is setting the Pace in the numbers as well as the letters rounds as he beats Andrew again here.

Teatime teaser: SIDEGIFT -> DIGESTIF

Round 10: C T M E O S A T G

Nathan: COAST (5)
Andrew: CAMEO (5)
DC: COTTAGES (8) MASCOT (6)
Score: 52–22 (max 80)

Andrew could have added the S to his word to win the round, but he misses CAMEOS and remains 30 behind.

Round 11: S J R E I O C F D

Nathan: FORCES (6)
Andrew: RIDES (5)
DC: COSIED (6) SCORED (6)
OT: CIDERS (6) CODERS (6) COSIER (6) CREDOS (6) DECORS (6) DICERS (6) DORIES (6) DORJES (6) EJIDOS (6) FIORDS (6) FJORDS (6) FODIES (6) FORCED (6) FRESCO (6) SCRIED (6)
Score: 58–22 (max 86)

A mass of sixes but Andrew can only get five and Nathan increases his lead still further.

OoW – Susie explains the origin of the word BALDERDASH following a request from a viewer.

Round 12: R S D E I A N R T

Nathan: RESTRAIN (8)
Andrew: RINSED (6)
DC: STRAINED (8) TRAINERS (8) TIRADES (7) SARDINE (7)
OT: DETRAINS (8) DRAINERS (8) RANDIEST (8) RETRAINS (8) SERRANID (8) STRAINER (8) TERRAINS (8) TRANSIRE (8)
Score: 66–22 (max 94)

A nice max by Nathan to seal the game, though realistically the game was won much earlier.

Round 13: B T F E O E V M I

Nathan: MOTIVE (6)
Andrew: BITE (4)
DC: VOMIT (5) EMOTIVE (7)
Score: 72–22 (max 101)

In what has become a pattern, Nathan again edges Andrew out of the round with a longer word.

Round 14: 3, 1, 10, 7, 50, 25. Target: 754.

Nathan: 750. Mistake in working.
Andrew: -
RR: 754. ((25+50)*10+1+3 (10)
Score: 72–22 (max 111)

Andrew is nowhere while Nathan has messed up his four away declaration. Rachael (kindly) tells them that she thinks studio nerves have got to them today as she shows them the way. Andrew (as in a previous numbers game) appears to be kicking himself round the block.

Round 15: A R I C H L U N Y

Nathan buzzes on 20 seconds to say UNARCHILY which is incorrect.
Andrew does not buzz.
The answer was RAUNCHILY.
Final Score: 72–22 (max 121)

So its Nathan who wins the battle of the new contestants following Stephen Briggs octochamp run. An unarchily performance sees him begin the new week of countdown with a win. Nathan seems to be a very enthusiastic contestant and may have a chance to notch up more wins

Andrew seemed affected by nerves and not just on the numbers games. Hopefully he enjoyed the experience which is after all what its all about.

Best wishes to countdowners everywhere.
