Thursday 13th November 2014 (Series 71, Prelim 86)

Post by Anthony Endsor »

Hello and welcome to the recap. :) James is otherwise engaged today so I am stepping in to his slot. This also acts as compensation for yet another Friday race-out Countdown is suffering from  which would otherwise mean I was recap-redundant once more.
Today sees Laurence Killen chasing his 6th win in an all Irish affair. Laurence is new to the apterous community, having joined presumably shortly after recording his time on the show. Considering he wasn't previously a member of apterous, he has done extremely well to get this far in the process. But how will he go on today, as Josephine Keane comes along from Dublin? Will the North-South divide close in on him today?
Enjoy.

Countdown recap for Thursday 13 November 2014.

RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: F P L E I E R N T

Laurence: FEINTER (7)
Josephine: REPENT (6)
DC: FERTILE (7) REPTILE (7)
OT: PERLITE (7)
Score: 7–0 (max 7)

Laurence gets off to a good start with FEINTER for 7. Josephine got a 6 at speed, but will now REPENT at leisure.

Round 2: M U E T N A U L S

Laurence: AMULETS (7)
Josephine: LAMENT (6)
DC: AUTUMNS (7)
OT: ALUMNUS (7) ELUANTS (7) LAMENTS (7) LUNATES (7) MANTELS (7) MANTLES (7) MULETAS (7) MUTUALS (7) MUTUELS (7) MUTULES (7) UMLAUTS (7)
Score: 14–0 (max 14)

Another 7 for Laurence with AMULETS. Josephine got LAMENT for 6, but will surely now be lamenting missing the S which could have given her a 7.

Round 3: 1, 7, 50, 75, 25, 100. Target: 946.

Laurence: 943. (100+50) -1 x 7 - 75 - 25 (7)
Josephine: 950.
OT: 947. (((50 x 7) - 1) x (75/25)) - 100 (7)
Score: 21–0 (max 21)

An impossible 4 large numbers game sees Laurence get another 7 points with 943. Josephine's 950 is not good enough to score. Rachel could do no better, but my research team tell me 947 is possible.

Teatime teaser: ANGLOMEN -> MANGONEL

Round 4: G N E U E Q T A S

Laurence: EQUATES (7)
Josephine: EQUATES (7)
DC: AGENTS (6)
OT: EQUANTS (7) NEGATES (7) SANGEET (7) SEQUENT (7) TUNEAGE (7)
Score: 28–7 (max 28)

This round EQUATES to 7 points a piece.

Round 5: W O U O S C S I P

Laurence: COPIOUS (7)
Josephine: SCOOPS (6)
Score: 35–7 (max 35)

A COPIOUS round for Laurence for 7. Josephine only SCOOPS 6, but doesn't score.

Round 6: 6, 8, 4, 9, 9, 75. Target: 212.

Laurence: 212. (9x6) - (9-8) x 4 (10)
Josephine: 212. (9-6) x 3 -9 -4 (10)
Score: 45–17 (max 45)

Good work on the numbers here sees both players get a perfect 10.

Kate Garroway talks about her time on radio.

Round 7: R D B E A T R I U

Laurence: TRIBADE (7)
Josephine: BARRED (6)
DC: RAREBIT (7) ARBITER (7) BRUITED (7)
OT: TARDIER (7) TARRIED (7)
Score: 52–17 (max 52)

Another 7 for Laurence with TRIBADE. Josephine only manages BARRED for 6. This sadly for her is becoming something of a theme in this game.

Round 8: N V E A E R N D A

Laurence: EARNED (6)
Josephine: VERANDA (7)
DC: ENDEAR (6)
OT: RAVENED (7)
Score: 52–24 (max 59)

But now the tide turns and it's Laurence who only manages 6 with EARNED, while Josephine grabs 7 back with VERANDA.

Round 9: 4, 3, 6, 3, 10, 7. Target: 167.

Laurence: 167. (4+3+3+6) x 10 + 7 (10)
Josephine: 167. (4+3+3+6) x 10 + 7 (10)
Score: 62–34 (max 69)

A perfect 10 for both players.

Teatime teaser: BIGWEDGE -> BEWIGGED

Round 10: L G R E I O P T S

Laurence: SPOILER (7)
Josephine: GOITRES (7)
DC: GRISTLE (7) RIPOSTE (7)
OT: GLISTER (7) GLORIES (7) GORIEST (7) LOGIEST (7) LOITERS (7) PETROLS (7) PIGLETS (7) PIOLETS (7) PISTOLE (7) POLITER (7) PORGIES (7) PROLEGS (7) ROPIEST (7) TOILERS (7) TRIPLES (7)
Score: 69–41 (max 76)

It's 7 a piece here. SPOILER and GOITRES.

Round 11: R M Z M I E U D O

Laurence: DOZIER (6)
Josephine: MIRED (5)
DC: MEMOIR (6) RIMMED (6) MEDIUM (6)
OT: IMMURED (7)
Score: 75–41 (max 83)

Laurence is the DOZIER here, but he gets another 6 points, as Josephine only manages MIRED for 5.

Susie Dent talks about the origin of bingo words.

Round 12: T E A I P C T O M

Laurence: TEAPOT (6)
Josephine: - (0)
DC: ATOMIC (6) CAPOTE (6) APOMICT (7)
OT: OPTIMATE (8)
Score: 81–41 (max 91)

Laurence gets a TEAPOT (wasn't he getting one anyway  ) for 6 points, while Josephine couldn't see anything so didn't score.

Round 13: R G J E I U F W G

Laurence: FIGURE (6)
Josephine: JIGGER (6)
DC: FUGGIER (7)
Score: 87–47 (max 98)

FIGURE and JIGGER for 6 points each.

Round 14: 3, 6, 9, 10, 4, 100. Target: 137.

Laurence: 137. (9x3) + 10 + 100 (10)
Josephine: 137. (9-6) x 10 + 3 + 4 + 100 (10)
Score: 97–57 (max 108)

It's a perfect 10 for both players again.

Round 15: S C A R I N G M E

This conundrum is SCARING ME. No really it is. But I'm not afraid to say it was Laurence who got SCREAMING in 6 seconds.

Laurence buzzes on 6 seconds to say SCREAMING which is correct.

Final Score: 107–57 (max 118)

So Laurence goes marching on and earns his 6th win and is now only 2 games away from joining the elite ranks of Octochampdom. How much further will he get? Well as said earlier, racing has washed out Friday's show again, so it'll be Monday before we see any further action. Join Andy McGurn to see if he can get win number 7. I'll be back next Friday, when one way or another we will have a different champion. I hope you will join me then. Thank you very much for reading, and goodbye for now. :)
