Countdown recap for Tuesday 5 November 2013.

Remember, remember the 5th of November as yet another Worsley Recap is brought to you (albeit late again, sorry )! Will there be any fireworks in the studio, I wonder? :D

C1: Champion Alan "Youngy" Young (3 wins, 267 points.) is an apterite from Glasgow who has been pretty solid in his three wins so far. Can he get to half octochampdom today?
C2: Challenger Michael McLaughlin is from Fox Rock in County Dublin, where he works as an electronics engineer. He is married to Mary and has three children, named Naomi and two others whose names I have no idea to spell. He is also a big Bob Marley fan.
DC: Susie Dent and Mark Foster.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: S R T E A E P S N

C1: PARENTS (7)
C2: PASTERS X
DC: PRESENTS (8) PASTERNS (8)
OT: EARNESTS (8) PERTNESS (8) RAPTNESS (8) SARSENET (8) SERPENTS (8) STERANES (8) TRAPESES (8)
Score: 7–0 (max 8)

Agent nouns are often quick tricky to judge whether they're valid or not and unfortunately for Michael, you can't be a paster, so Alan strikes the first blow. There were a few eights around, though.

Round 2: S U H A C O T U H

C1: CHAOS (5)
C2: COUTH (5)
DC: SHOUT (5) SCOUT (5) SOUTH (5) TACHOS (6)
OT: CUSHAT (6) SHOCHU (6) TOCHUS (6)
Score: 12–5 (max 14)

A nasty round with just a few sixes available. My personal favourite is TOCHUS, which is an informal North American term for someone's buttocks or anus. :P :D

Round 3: 100, 75, 5, 6, 5, 3. Target: 927.

C1: 925.
C2: 927. (5 + 5) x 100 - 75 + 6/3 (10)
Score: 12–15 (max 24)

Michael takes the lead with a perfect numbers solve.

Teatime teaser: UNLITFAG -> FAULTING

Round 4: L E N R I F U L D

C1: UNFILLED (8)
C2: DULLER (6)
OT: URNFIELD (8)
Score: 20–15 (max 32)

A good risk by Alan and he now has his lead back.

Round 5: M D T E I O R P E

C1: METEOR (6)
C2: DEMOTE (6)
DC: IMPORTED (8)
Score: 26–21 (max 40)

DC spot IMPORTED but the contestants get stuck on sixes.

Round 6: 50, 2, 6, 10, 3, 4. Target: 811.

C1: 811. (6 + 10) x 50 + 2 x 4 + 3 (10)
C2: 812.
Score: 36–21 (max 50)

This time it's Alan who is spot on with the numbers and his lead goes into double figures.

Mark talks about his tough time on Strictly Come Dancing and how he was once mistaken by a woman as her window cleaner.

Round 7: T R M O A I S B E

C1: AMORTISE (8)
C2: BARMIEST (8)
DC: ATOMISER (8) BROMATES (8)
Score: 44–29 (max 58)

A good round for everyone with all four eights being mentioned.

Round 8: F R A T O N A P U

C1: PATRON (6)
C2: PATRON (6)
OT: TANPURA (7) UPFRONT (7)
Score: 50–35 (max 65)

The studio gets stuck on PATRON but there were a couple of trickyish sevens hiding in there.

Round 9: 100, 75, 50, 25, 5, 6. Target: 159.

C1: 159. 100 + 50 + 6 + 75/25 (10)
C2: 159. 100 + 50 + 6 + 75/25 (10)
Score: 60–45 (max 75)

Alan deviates from his usual two large and goes adventurous with the easier (for me, I hate two large) four large. His willingness to take the odd risk is rewarded with a stupidly easy target by CECIL, who likes to be a pain sometimes.

Teatime teaser: DUOENACT -> OUTDANCE

Round 10: N O S V E W O M E

C1: WOVEN (5)
C2: NOOSE (5)
DC: SOMEONE (7)
Score: 65–50 (max 82)

Not an easy selection and DC do well to spot SOMEONE for the darren.

Round 11: G S B I E O A S J

C1: BASIS (5)
C2: BOGIES (6)
OT: BAGSIES (7)
Score: 65–56 (max 89)

Michael cuts Alan's lead down to single figures with BOGIES but another max is missed by all.

OoW: Susie talks about "sticklers" of the English language; those who are pedantic about it.

Round 12: T I G P E L A M Q

C1: PIGLET (6)
C2: GIMLET (6)
DC: MAGPIE (6) GELATI (6)
OT: IMPALE (6) LIGATE (6) LIMPET (6) MAGILP (6) MEGILP (6) MILAGE (6)
Score: 71–62 (max 95)

You might be forgiven for thinking you were missing an obvious seven but this turns out to be a very flat round.

Round 13: R E T D R O E S D

C1: DESERT (6)
C2: RESTORED (8)
OT: RESORTED (8) ROSTERED (8)
Score: 71–70 (max 103)

Michael has almost RESTORED parity with his eight and this leaves things perfectly poised as we head towards the conclusion of the game.

Round 14: 100, 5, 3, 4, 4, 7. Target: 769.

C1: 770. (100 + 5 + 4) x 7 + 3 + 4 (7)
C2: 767.
RR: 769. (100 - 3) x (4 + 4) - 7 (10)
Score: 78–70 (max 113)

Alan gets one closer than Michael but it's not perfect, meaning that his seven points won't be enough to avoid a crucial conundrum. Rachel shows that the way to solve this one is to work down from 800. Now who will take the honours in this game?

Round 15: D E E C L I M A X

C1 buzzes on 2.75 seconds to say CLIMAXED which is incorrect.
C2 buzzes on 7.75 seconds to say EXCLAIMED which is correct.
Final Score: 78–80 (max 123)

Wow, real drama here! Alan looked to have done it by buzzing in but he offered the eight CLIMAXED, obviously deceived by CLIMAX being written in the scramble. It takes Michael another five seconds to work out the answer and it's enough for him to steal the game, despite trailing for most of it. Alan's been a good champion but his three wins sadly won't be enough for him to make the finals next month. Michael will begin the defence of his crown tomorrow which Robbo will guide you through. I'll be back next week, see you then! :)

"My personal favourite is TOCHUS, which is an informal North American term for someone's buttocks or anus."

I don't know the spelling, but the word derives from Yiddish. The Jewish colleague who told me this has since retired, so I can't ask him...
