Very upset by the news about Gary Speed today.

One of my heroes of the glory days of the early 90s.

(Not that I'm not sad about the Togo players but I don't really know anything about them so don't feel the loss so much)

Just watching Stoke and noticing the green paint over the pitch markings from the previous game. At first glance I assumed it was just markings from Rugby played there or something, but now I realise they've obviously had to widen/lengthen the pitch for the european game. I'm assuming this isn't by choice. I have heard of them making the pitch narrower to suit their crap style before but i'm surprised the official pitch dimensions differs from the FA to UEFA.

Not sure how reliable my sources are here but cba searching further, have a bbc.co.uk/sport page which I will assume is correct for the premier league but doesn't say as much and a wiki page for UEFA. In England it must be between 100 yards (90m) and 130 yards (120m) length wise and the width not less than 50 yards (45m) and not more than 100 yards (90m). UEFA appear to have 4 categories. For categories 1 and 2, which I assume are lower level games, the dimenions are 100 to 105 m long, 64 to 68 m wide and then for categories 3 and 4, which I shall assume the Stoke game falls into, 105 m long, 68 m wide.

Also, Walters just came on and he doesn't look half as tough without his handlebar moustache.

Common ploy in amateur rugby league was/is, if there's a choice of pitches, to play to one's strengths and the opposition's weakness, i.e. a small pitch if you dominate the forwards, and a wide one if you dominate the backs.

Same of home field advantage in most sports I imagine, preparation of the pitch in cricket being a good example.

Spain, Italy and Croatia for Ireland and Ukraine, Sweden and France for England in the Euro 2012 groups. Ireland obviously gonna get it tough against Spain but I think with an Italian manager it's possible.

Just because Eoin lives in Northern Ireland, it doesn't mean he has to support Northern Ireland, so why not the Republic? Personally, I support American Samoa.

I have been on Sky Sports' website all day and the highlight for me is the ongoing terms between Bobby Zamora and QPR.

FULHAM CONFIRMED INS:

JACK GRIMMER - UNDISCLOSED
CSABA SOMOGYI - FREE

FULHAM CONFIRMED OUTS:

ALEX KACANIKLIC - LOAN
MARCELLO TROTTA - LOAN
KEANU MARSH-BROWN - RELEASED
COREY GAMEIRO - LOAN
RICHARD PENIKET - LOAN

I'll do that for anyone who wants their club.

Oh, shit. I wish it was a joke now.

No, there really was an advert scrolling round the pitchside advertising their shirts or something which gave the url as chelsefc.com/shopping. It was an alternating with a correctly spelled one. I kept expecting somebody to notice and pull it or change it, but no, it kept appearing throughout.

Sorry, it really was that dull. Not as exciting as a cat on the pitch or a fan handcuffed to a goalpost.

You know, I'm not joking, I did actually see that. I just had no idea really until you'd said it.
I actually remember thinking "that 'a' looked funny" as I just caught sight of it before it the camera changed or it left the screen, and then when I looked back and saw it again shortly after it seemed to be fine, which your "alternating with a correctly spelled one" fits with.

Cool.

As an exciting follow-up to this, I was avidly watching the electronic advertising boards during the England v Netherlands game last night, and there was an advert for ...er, something, I can't remember what - McDonald's football academies or something? - anyway, and there was a bit where it just said "n thousand children and counting", except there was a ballboy/steward crouched right down over the "o" in counting so it clearly just said "cunting" instead. It was shortly after Parker got that tripod in the bollocks, because when I started giggling I pretended to my son that it was still at that. I hate Parker.

Why do you hate Parker, out of interest?

I think he's gone from being underrated to overrated too quickly, and he looks a bit like a 90s popstar. That's why I don't like him. But I wouldn't say I hate him.

Those are all good points and certainly contribute. But mainly for me it's just his attitude on the pitch. He's one of those cunts (like Michael Brown, for example) where it just seems to me that he would happily just chop everybody down if he could get away with it, particularly when games aren't going his way.

Any of our resident maths geniuses want to work out the odds of the Champions League draw coming up with the same pairings as the rehearsal? Sky Sports said 5000-1 but it seems like it would be a bit more than that to me. The equation is complicated by the seedings and the fact you can't get drawn against someone you played against in the group stages.

I did this just now for my (seldom updated) blog. I got 1 in 5,463 by brute-forcing it.
