Hi all,

Just set this up for people to add their personal choices, for the first ever song you ever remember hearing, and thoughts about it, where you heard it etc....

As a millennial, my first ever memory of a song is being played must have been when I was about 3, and that song is "Dancing In The Moonlight" by Toploader, which my parents would play on CD in the car for long journeys etc... It was a tune then and it still is now... :)

It's mad how memories work. They're notoriously unreliable and yet you can convince yourself of details that you're sure of even though you couldn't actually know. I have a memory of being about three as well, standing up in my cot, bopping away to a Queen song. I can't remember which song it was yet I'm still sure it was Queen even though I couldn't have known that when I was three. It was only later on that I heard the song again which triggered the memory and allowed me to identify it as that song I heard in my cot but now I can't remember which song it was but I do know it was Queen.

Also it's a great topic but can we expand it earliest over all memory? I remember my second birthday, sitting at the table and the room just lit up with the candles on the cake and then being frightened when they were blow out. Come to think of it people would probably have been singing happy birthday so that's probably one of the first songs people hear but it's not part of that memory at all.

Sure, but the prime focus is on music. :)

Crawling along the ground, and being pulled back by my mum on those drawstring things some baby rompers have on.

My third ever memory, pleasingly, is of my dad having a poo.

Yesterday by The Beatles. I think I was 3 or 4yo, but as Mark said, memories can be very unreliable. I also remember singing the chorus to Yellow Submarine over and over again from about the same time.

First single bought was "I Did What I Did For Maria" by Tony Christie in 1971 (45p). I don't remember my first album. First gig was The New Seekers on FA Cup final day in 1974. My second gig was UFO in 1979, so there was a shift in my musical choice in those 4 years.

I used to love Boney M in 1978 (especially Brown Girl in the Ring), but this is half memory, half post hoc filling in. The first #1 I'm sure I remember is Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick from Jan 1979, just after I'd turned 2. I certainly loved Pink Floyd's decade-ending #1 too.

Coincidentally, the first single I bought was "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" (must have been December 1978 as I remember playing it a lot over Xmas that year). The first song I can definitely remember hearing on the radio was "Save Your Kisses For Me" by Brotherhood of Man (early summer 1976, in a car with my grandparents). Bonus information: I think the car would have been an Austin Allegro.

If it is of any interest, the car was a Red Passat Estate. I can also remember Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve being blasted around the car frequently as a youngster, too...

Oh gods, we had one of those, silver with the red and orange stripes. It might have gone faster without that added paint.

At the risk of derailing this thread slightly, at the same time our family car was one of these, a Volkswagen Variant:

I only mention it because they seem to be completely forgotten now. I remember when my mum once completely demolished part of the garden wall while reversing out and didn't even realise until she got back. Seriously, those cars were built like tanks.

VW's were- our Passat had over 200,000 miles on the clock when we sold it after having it for nearly 10 years...
