Looks like people are keen to do this again. See Marc already did his list in the 2017 thread, when's the deadline for submissions?

Should post the rules as well :P

1. 10 names, must have some sort of notability;
2. Once you've posted your list, that's it. No revisions.
3. Each one that dies in 2017 scores (120 - age of death);
4. Bonus of 25 points for any one of them being murdered;
5. Bonus of 25 points if you are the first person to nominate a celeb who dies (or something similar, need to check with Jim)

and as for my own list.

Rosemary West
Leah Bracknall
Nobby Stiles
Clive James
Olivia Newton-John
Prunella Scales
David Prowse
Linda Nolan
June Whitfield
Tessa Jowell

How are you going to define that objectively though?

If we're gonna suggest rule changes I think 120 is too high. It ruins the risk reward element of going for young people. You may as well just pick a list of people over 90. I know people are living longer than ever but who realistically lives to 120? To get over 20 points for people in their 90s is too much.

Dick van Dyke
Regis Philbin
Bill Clinton
James Earl Jones
Barbara Streisand
Mel Brooks
Bret Michaels
Queen Elizabeth II
Gay Byrne
Kanye West

Not many changes from last year although no more Gazza for once so he's probably guaranteed to go now.

1 person has lived to a verified age past 120....https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeanne_Calment :ugeek:

I don't get what lowering it from 120 would do...surely it would have no effect?

Lets imagine one person has someone die who is 60 and another has someone who is 100:
120-60=60
120-100=20

Lets imagine the number you subtract from is 100:
100-60=40
100-100=0

it's still the same difference of differences. the person who picked the 60 year old would be getting 40 more points than the other either way.

As a sidenote, The deathlist, which this was presumably named after, is basically where people try and find the oldest people they can with even the slightest bit of notability. Really clutching at straws for some of the so-called celebrities on there.

I genuinely think she'll still be around if you're doing this in 2028. Ain't a chance she's going soon the amount of care she gets - she can still ride a horse for god's sake.

The points difference is the same but likelihood of death is different. People are less likely to pick younger people because, even though you would get more points the likelihood of it happening is less. Plus the fact that you can also get a first pick bonus means you're better off focusing on the older people who are more likely.

And that's my point. The game has basically become let's pick really old celebrities. The original celebrity death pool cut off was 100 and I don't get why that needed to be changed. Maybe if we keep it at 120 but reduce the first pick bonus?

It makes a difference because you could end up with negative points. Also, it makes a difference when different people score with a different number of people.

If it's 120, then two people of 99 get a total of 42 points. One person of 80 gets 40.

If it's 100, then two people of 99 get 2 points. One person of 80 gets 20.

Here's my list of very old people, just last year's with the dead two replaced. Rest in peace Chuck Berry, rot in hell Hugh Hefner.

Vera Lynn
Prince Philip
Sir David Attenborough :(
Angela Lansbury
Barbara Bush
George H.W. Bush
Jimmy Carter
Betty White
I.M. Pei
Kirk Douglas

I agree the first time bonus is too high and while I think people above 100 should score some points maybe the current system is a bit shit. Maybe some kind of polynomial or exponential growth formula could be used, to greatly reward people who go for young people?

Re: Deathwatch 2018

I propose picking a constant x (we're essentially doing it with 1 here), 1.05 seems like a decent value from playing around a little bit feel free to change, and then a fixed age N (say 90) and then multiplying whatever points you would get by x^(N-[age of death]). This is just a suggestion after a couple minutes of thinking, I'm sure there's better formulas. So using my values, for a 90 year old you would keep the same score, a 95 year old would score 0.783526166 times what you would get, a 70 year old would be 2.653297705 times it and so on.

Alternatively, do away with all the other shit. Just get straight up the amount of points from the formula (you could always multiply by 100 or that long decimal Gevin likes to use or something) and just get that many points for a person. Yeah, I like this one more. So that's like 100 for a 90 year old, 78.4 points for a 95 year old, 265.3 points for a 70 year old and so on, feel free to fuck around with the exact values until you get something you like. Could still have like a 20 point bonus for first person to say someone, 100 point bonus for murder (or like double points) or something. Whatever

And I reckon there should be a wise person or people to adjudicate if people are too ill to count (and also if they actually qualify as being 'famous')

The linear thing is a bit simplistic, but it depends how complex you want to go for something as unimportant as this.

Is it necessary to mention the deaths who weren't on anyone's list here? Whenever I see this thread has turned red and is at the top of the page I think someone must have scored some points and when it's just Gev listing off the latest dead "celebrity" it's a bit of a disappointment.

I like to be able to look back and see who died in a given year so having this thread enables me to do that. Though I could just edit an existing post to add new people rather than make a new post if it's that annoying.

Sure, I can continue the 2017 version without a cutoff. Until everyone's choices have died, or until I've died, whichever comes first. I'll have to check to see if I've missed any deaths from these first couple of months, though (don't think I have but you never know). I'll post an updated leaderboard soon (back in the Deathwatch 2017 thread, I won't clutter up this one).

It was on the BBC most read down the side. They did previously take measures against this zombie article thing by having a note by the link to really old articles saying its date. Obviously they forgot to carry on doing that.

Anyway I accept full responsibility.
