Nicolas Cage is amazing. The accepted story seems to be that he blew all the money that he'd made from his early successful films on dinosaur skeletons and Austrian castles and stuff (and owes loads in taxes), so has had to appear in any old shit since then just to keep afloat. I've no idea if that's true or not (I suspect there must be some truth to it) but it doesn't really matter, because I think he's now got a much more interesting filmography than he would have had if he'd stayed in the mainstream. So yeah, good for him.

And needless to say I'm looking forward to this when I can get to see it.

I thought Mandy was terrible (apart from the soundtrack)
The dialogue was appalling.
But many of my movie gowing friends think it's brilliant.
So maybe it's me

Watched Ready Player One the other night, was okay actually, although over-simplified from the book, which is saying something.

Ironically it didn't have enough Spielberg references considering he made it

I was indeed thinking that it was most unlike his sort of referential type of thing. [this may be the least coherent thing I've said all week]

Watched two in-flight movies this week.

"First Man", the Neil Armstrong biopic was very good, and I can recommend it.

"Widows" based on the Lynda La Plante novel/mini-series, started off well, but the final twists were a bit preposterous.

Point Break - about time I’d watched it, and good to watch on a plane to California. Scratched an itch; oh to be young and free again.

The Conjuring - trope-heavy but well made and just a bit scary at times

The Nun - the above’s prequel or sequel or something. Complete garbage.

Can you ever forgive me? - Kinda bleak and sad yet funny and in a way uplifting. Worth watching.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this. I love Melissa McCarthy. I've only seen her in comedy roles up until now and can't wait to see what she's like in something more serious. A lot of comedians transfer well to serious roles, so hopes are high. And Richard E. Grant is always good fun in whatever he does.

The Highwaymen.....Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson. A netflix special. It's about the hunt for Bonnie and Clyde. I quite enjoyed it 7/10

Also new on netflix, The Thing. I hadn't seen this in over 30 years and was surprised how well it had aged. It's considered to be one of the last big special effects movie not to use CGI, and the effects are very impressive when you know that.

That and the original Bladerunner.
Both overshadowed by the hype of E.T.

Just watched Joker.
A brilliant tour de force performance by Joachim Phoenix.
A very dark movie evoking ekenents of A Clockwork Orange and Taxi Driver
I see the movie is getting pelters for using a Garry Glitter track.
I can't believe anyone would boycott a film over s piece of music.
I'm sure I will get some pelters for that.
I can easily seperate the art from the artist.
Hence I have no problem watching Polanski movies.
Not Woody Allen though , cos his movies are not my cup of tea.

Jojo Rabbit.
If you like satire and your humour dark then this film is for you.
Laugh out loud moments followed by scenes to make you sob.
I haven't seen a better film at the cinema this year and I've seen over a hundred ( good old Curzon movie pass )

Considering I have Netflix , I haven't got round to that one yet.
It seems this year is a good year for comedy actors playing serious roles.

Just watched Velvet Buzzsaw. Thought it was pretty good. The final third was a bit weak but overall I would recommend it. I liked Nightcrawler from the same director too, his cinematography is amazing, in particular his shots of city skylines which are unreal in both movies.

2001: A Space Odyssey was on the other morning. I had watched it before back when I smoked weed which is supposedly how you're meant to watch it but I didn't like it that first time so thought I'd give it another. Still not getting it really. You can tell how well it's made I guess and it was probably groundbreaking for its time but it falls way outside any all time greats list for me.

Also caught Once Upon Time in Hollywood over the weekend. Can't make my mind up on it. I love to watch Red Letter Media and they always that Tarantino is the last true film maker who can command a mainstream audience. Like everything he makes is true to his vision. I agree with that and I guess overall I enjoyed it but I wouldn't put it up there as one of his best. I was amazed at the recreation of the time period. When they're just driving around the streets of L.A. it's astounding how authentic it feels and looks.

Once Upon a Time in America was very self indulgent .
For a film that lasts close to three hours nothing really happens until the last 15 minutes
That said it's still visually better than most things I saw at the cinema in 2019 ( I watched a lot of movies in the cinema ).
Great performance from Brad Pitt , deserved his Oscar.

Die Another Day was on ITV just now. The first half is brilliant. The second is... not. Brosnan is brilliant in it, Halle Berry isn't (what's she doing nowadays? The sort of D-list celeb that would be ideal in Dictionary Corner, surely?), Toby Stephens is OK as a deranged North Korean general who's whitewashed himself, which is... an, ahem, *interesting* idea.

In all seriousness, the minute London Calling starts playing is the minute the film crashes downhill, it's almost like the storyline was two films they had to squeeze into one. The infamously bad CGI's not... actually that bad (but admittedly I was watching what appears to have been a HD-upscaled version). Everything that goes before London Calling is amazing, however, and I thoroughly recommend the first 30-odd minutes for anyone even vaguely into James Bond.

Easily the worst Bond film. He has an invisible car ffs! Also, the scene where he windsurfs on a tsunami is embarrassing. This movie could have killed off the franchise.

In a way it did, cos it then rebooted and then we had Casino Royale, one of the best (in my Top 5, if you read my Bond countdown list on Facebook relatively recently...)

But again, that's in the naff second half... and the car chase is pretty good, since the car's hardly ever invisible. And, well, the theory works.

It's #1 in the US Netflix charts, so obviously opening the contest up to some Americans. Seems well received with the viewers, but not so much the critics. Volcano Man cracks me up.

Just watched Gravity. Terrible film. Obviously it was made to be watched in the cinema in 3D so I missed out on all of the super-duper special effects, but a film needs to be more than special effects. If a film minus its special effects is terrible, then it's never going to be good. Watch The Martian instead.

I enjoyed The Imitation Game on Netflix the other night.

I found it slightly irritating when characters kept saying how "smart" Alan Turing was. I'm pretty sure that the term "smart", meaning "clever", wasn't around in the 1940s. Turing seemed to know what they meant though, so maybe he was even smarter than I thought.

I'm sure you're right, but in the film it was used by the British characters, a couple of times when he was a pupil at Sherbourne school in 1926, and again by Keira Knightley at Bletchley Park.

When I was at school (some time after 1926), the term "smart" could mean well dressed, but for a short time it was used for "cool" or "good". It may have been a northern thing.

I found it more irritating that Turing was portrayed as an isolated loner, when in reality he had an active social life and a wide circle of friends. That plus the usual historical absurdities, like the way the film depicts John Cairncross (later revealed as the "fifth man") as working with Turing at Bletchley Park.

Just watched Gravity at the weekend. Quite enjoyed it - it flew by (haha). Just shows that a single-idea film can be entertaining. And well done her for landing on land in the tropics.

I did! Maybe it helped that I have a big telly? It was obviously a very simple idea, simply done, which to me, is quite nice. Didn't need to think too hard about it.

To be fair, all you said about it was that it was "terrible", which is an opinion, but hardly a review.

We've been watching all the Bond movies in sequence as ITV have been showing them over the past few weekends (except Goldfinger which they missed out for some reason). Watching For Your Eyes Only, I was reminded of Barry Norman's comment that it "cost less to make than its predecessor, Moonraker, and, while still not coming within hailing distance of plausibility, was at least close enough to be contacted by phone".

Now that's a review.

Well I left it at that because I knew that it wouldn't reach Barry Norman's standards.

But anyway, it was just about a woman floating about in space trying not to die. There was nothing really gripping about the way it was done, and the way George Clooney's character decided to commit suicide was just stupid and showed that the film makers had no idea about physics. There was also one point where the killer satellite shrapnel came along and destroyed exactly everything present except for Sandra Bullock's character and the shuttle she needed to get into. That sort of thing goes too far and reduces any potential suspense in future scenes. It was also quite unclear what was going on a lot of the time - what she needed to do to get to the next stage in the process and what she was doing etc.

Watching For Your Eyes Only, I was reminded of Barry Norman's comment that it "cost less to make than its predecessor, Moonraker, and, while still not coming within hailing distance of plausibility, was at least close enough to be contacted by phone".

Now that's a review.
I don't think it was Barry Norman, but my favourite review was for Alien 3......."In space, no one can hear you yawn."

My favourite review was of Raise the Titanic,. I think Barry Norman said it would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic

It was Lew Grade, and it wasn't a review. Other than that, excellent.

This was a fun silly campy film.
I'm not sure Americans will get it but if you like Eurovision you will like this
Even Will Ferrell is not annoying , which is hard to achieve
I think it was OK and picked up a lot when the action got to Edinburgh, but Will Ferrell was clearly trying too hard and could have chopped off a fair bit. The ending was so utterly soppy. However, I thought it was OK overall. 3 stars.

I am also watching the James Bonds - many of which I haven't seen before. Don't think ITV are showing all of them (they went straight from OHMSS to The Spy Who Loved Me I think). Loved The Spy Who Loved Me. For Your Eyes Only was OK - License to Kill was good but not great. GoldenEye this Saturday, though... my personal favourite.

Probably a budget review rather than a film review.
Actually this was the first film I watched, at the cinema, that I fell asleep watching.
The second one was The Swarm.
Fun fact, when a critic interviewed Michael Caine about how dire it was, he replied that it paid for his summer house.
I'm Sure Phil will let everyone know if I'm wrong though

I will, that referred to one of the Jaws sequels - IV, I think.

Did you read my review of it (a few posts above)? A bit of a difference of opinion!

The other person watching with me found it gripping, and no matter how implausible it all was, we weren't there for a physics lesson (it wasn't that bad either - the momentum he clearly had was possibly enough to take her with him - seemed reasonable, if overly noble). As for confusion, I was only half watching, and it was pretty clear what was going on to my mind - like I said above, it was a pretty simple, linear tale. Not sure what there was to get confused about.

Nope, so far they've showed all the Eon films (i.e. the official ones) apart from Goldfinger. They're tending to show the better regarded ones on Saturday evenings and the lesser ones on Sunday afternoons, which means they sometimes come out of sequence.

It seemed to me that he had no momentum left because they were holding on at that point, and momentum doesn't have memory. It might seem a small point but it would have been quite easy for them to do it in a more realistic looking way.

With the confusion, I understood the main objective - it was just some of the little things that were going on. E.g. What is she trying to achieve right now?

Tenet.... spoiler free review.
Feeling confused all the good guys wearing masks a sense of impending doom.
Yes a film that fits in with the current world atm.

What's good : Great visuals and set pieces.. To steal someone else's quote (over to you Phil) it's like James Bond on acid..

What's bad : Iffy soundtrack, mumbled dialogue at times a bit like talking to someone with a face covering.
Dodgy Russian accent from Sir Ken.

Overall, needs at least two watches in order to follow it, although please don't copy me and watch it twice in the same day.
4 out of 5 rating
As a footnote for those that watched it
This is ineresting

Watch Upload instead similar premise but far more entertaining and on a fraction of the budget

Thanks for the recommendation.

I don't mind sci-fi, but this modern surge of superhero movies leaves me cold.

I tried watching another one that was recommended by a different friend, called The Umbrella Stand, or something, and lasted one episode. There was a sage-like talking chimp in it, and no-one batted an eyelid.

The Umbrella Acadamy is OK.
If you want to watch something that subverts the Super hero genre than give The Boys a go.
I do have a love hate relationship with Marvel and DC films.
Just lately only Logan and Joker worked for me because they were plot and character driven and would work as a non comic book movie.

Give Watchmen a go both the film and the breathtaking HBO series

I watched Joker recently and thought it was awful. Forget being a poor man's King of Comedy, this was destitute.

Watched a few based on a true story stuff which I enjoyed.

American Made with Tom Cruise. Decent. Ended up reading about the real thing while watching the movie though. I tend to do that a lot recently, read wiki on my phone with the movie in the background.

Bad Education with Hugh Jackman (not Jack Whitehall). Excellent stuff. Really enjoyed it. Alison Janney is always good too.

Marvellous. Based on the true story of Stoke City's kit man. It was marvellous.

It truly was marvellous, Toby Jones was superb as was the writing by Peter Bowker who went on to write the A Word

Beyond the disgruntled fan boys, yours is the first negative reviews of The Joker I've heard.
An acting tour de force. Yes, it is derivative but it captured seventies New York perfectly, its more a Taxi Driver homage than the King of Comedy.
Interestingly Scorcese was meant to be a producer of this film but when Netflix was chucking money his way in order to make The Irishman he had to drop out
