Fantasy World Athletics Championships

Post by Oliver Garner »

Hi all,

I have set up a Fantasy game for the upcoming World Championships in Beijing. Similar to Fantasy Football - pick 11 athletes while keeping within a budget, with points for position, personal bests and that sort of thing. Entry closes 2300BST on Friday.

The entry form is here:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1jAAu8u ... 8/viewform

Athlete lists and more detailed rules can be found here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... =107746512

Enjoy!

Cheers Oli, thought I wasn't going to be able to get my entry in, but have done it now. Doubt it'll change. Quite a challenge keeping within the limit there, much tougher than Fantasy football!

Anyone who picked KJT, don't worry - she's got a few jumps left in her - see if she can pick herself up for the individual long jump. So agonising for her; I was with Colin Jackson though in that she should have played it ultra-safe on her last jump, even go for a 6.30-6.40 to keep in among the medals.

I actually wanted Jess Ennis more than KJT if I'm honest, but went for the latter because she was doing the individual event too. And yes, I've never really understood why decathletes and heptathletes - even the very top ones - don't use their second attempt as the ultra-safe jump. Then at least they've got some points and can go for it all-out on the third.

Never got round to doing this. Never mind!

She said in an interview that she meant for the second jump to be a safe one but she obviously just fucked it up.

Your point makes perfect sense - go all out on the first jump, and if it goes well then you don't need to bother wasting a jump by getting a "banker". But then if it's a no-jump, then just make your second jump the banker.

Vivian Cheruiyot a snip at £6 - easy choice!

How come everyone else got 8 points for van Zyl and I only got 2?

It's obviously a conspiracy!

Nah, I've no idea. Oli's probably not just finished updating it yet - if you look, everyone who has KJT has no points, when in reality she should either have "THU" for her next event, or have at least some points from her PB in the heptathlon shot. I think.

Well, at least I wasn't last though I was a bit out of my depth there, I'm not keeping up with everything any more, especially field events.

Some more bits and bobs:

Most productive of the 11 categories: Male sprints (average 28.5 points/player), closely followed by female sprints (average 28.1 pts), then female throws (average 26.3 points) and female jumps (average 24.2 points/player).

Least productive category (surprisingly to me) was male jumps (just 12.4 points on average).

Finally, it's quite noticeable that the players who did well (particularly the top two) tended to do so in the categories that other players effectively ignored - consistency is the key (as disgraced former Gladiator Shadow said, repeatedly, until getting chucked off the show).

Cheers for that Oli, much fun. Any plans for something similar around next year's Olympic athletics programme?

Oh, I was only posting the final leaderboard for convenience, as all the data's in the original file that Oli posted anyway (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... =107746512).
