Spoilers for Tuesday May 31st 2011

Post by Andy McGurn »

After two quite one-sided quarters and that tough one between Mary and Tom yesterday, the game that is normally the closest between number four and number five takes centre stage today.

Ned Pendleton the cool, laid back Londoner faces, er…. me.

Stats (even less detailed than Jordan’s, sorry)

Firstly

No 4 seed, Andy McGurn (8 wins, 702 points)
Highest Score: 110 vs Pam Hill (3rd game)
Lowest score : 64 vs Adam Fleetwood (2nd game)
Conundrums: 3/8

Secondly

No 5 seed, Ned Pendleton (8 wins, 664 points)
Highest Score: 92 vs Greg Bowler (4th game) and vs Emmett Masterson (8th game)
Lowest Score: 69 vs Mark Jones (1st game)
Conundrums: 1/8

Thoroughly enjoyed watching this one again - this bore so many similarities to the corresponding quarter-final in the previous series (Scott vs me) where the no.4 seed went behind by 7pts, then again by a further 7pts which at this level is really hard to claw back. I don't know how Andy felt but when I was in the exact same position I felt I had a mountain to climb and rather than be put under more pressure, just relaxed into the rest of the game, thinking that it was probably more or less over. Congrats to both players who produced a thrilling contest - shame that one of you had to lose. Really good to meet you both too :)

Just out of interest were the two conundrums shown the only two that actually happened or were there more that were cut.

I remember someone saying in this game there were four, although only two were shown: http://wiki.apterous.org/Episode_4825

Also does anybody know if there's ever been an episode where more than two have been shown, appreciate this might be difficult to answer without our resident statto around.

In round 10 you could just do (25-3)*6=132.

No, The only ones I got were the numbers alt and yesterday's numbers, just as James, who, quotes what he sees in the recap.

Very very good game indeed. I hope it's indicative of the remaining three games too. I did say that the third and fourth quarter finals are usually closer than the first and the second!
If you cut a gandiseeg in half, do you get two gandiseegs or two halves of a gandiseeg?

Douglas - those were the only two conundrums in today's game. I'd not been there before when this has happened and obviously it took a while to change the board before the recording could continue.

They were the only two conundrums done on the day, very tense stuff indeed!

I do what Kirk Bevin's suggests as 'declare' between the two televised contestants, when Andy declared 8 I'd have 'played' ODORISES.

Not wanting to rain on your parade yet again, Rhys, but James always makes clear which words he's spotted himself and which he's found while doing the recap.

Great game guys. Unlucky on the conundrums Ned. DUNNIES was good, NOTABLES was even better and TOMATINE was simply superb. I thought at the time that Andy deserved it after spotting that, but it was so tense on the conundrums that it seemed to be more a matter of who could hold themselves together the best at the end.

Another niner for Adam and yet another century. Well done, that man."

Thanks Clive. Other eps are 1156, 1734 and 2191. More than I thought, and I may still have missed some!

Are you certain about 817? And IIRC, 3959 apparently only had two, despite comments made in a Countdown Experience.
