Spoilers For Friday June 18th 2010 (Grand Final)

Post by James Robinson »

So, we've reached the main event, the piece de resistance. The top 2 competitors of Series 62 go into battle to decide who will be the new series champion of Countdown.

Will it be New Malden's Oliver Garner or Swindon's Nicki Sellars :?:

Here are the stats:-

Firstly, No.1 Seed Oliver Garner - 10 Wins, 1,030 Points 8-)
Highest Score: 123 vs. Claudia Tyson (Quarter-Final)
Lowest Score: 81 vs. Mark Goodliffe (8th Game)
9's Achieved: 4/6
Conundrum Success: 4/10

Secondly, No.7 Seed Nicki Sellars - 8 Wins, 745 Points
Highest Score: 100 vs. Danny Pledger (Quarter-Final)
Lowest Score: 68 vs. Alan Hibbert (6th Game)
9's Achieved: 0/1
Conundrum Success: 3/9

So, who will be celebrating tonight :?: Well, surely everyone when England beat Algeria (hopefully), but who will be the toast of their town and return home with the complete set of dictionaries and the Richard Whiteley Memorial Trophy :?:

Find out with Mike tomorrow, or just watch it in a hour and three-quarters time. ;) :) :D  8-)

I really don't know who to support today. Oli is without doubt the standout player of this series and thoroughly deserves to win. But Nicki's a mate (as is Dave, her husband, who I used to work and socialise with back in the '80s) and has performed extremely well on the show, particularly in the quarter/semi-final stages. I'm going to be gutted whoever loses. :(

Yeah, it's a very friendly final. The series might not have had as many standout players, compared to the last 2 series, but there have been many colourful and friendly figures throughout the series.

So, it's a bit of a mix of good :D and bad.

Well played Oliver - the deserved champion imo. Your effort, hard work and dedication has been rewarded - enjoy the dictionaries and the title.

Very well done Oliver - a concerted effort that came to optimal fruition. Commiserations to Nicki, who did so well throughout the series and was unlucky to come up against such an exceptional player in the final.

Incidentally, am I missing a gag/reference in the "BEDISCLUE" conundrum scramble?

Well played Oliver, a very worthy series champ, you now join the other Countdown greats. 8-)

Commiserations to Nicki, but congrats on being a series finalist. Also well done to the Countdown team for yet another enjoyable series. :D

Congratulations to both semi-finalists but especially to Oliver on a terrific game and a decisive win.

The Series 62 title could so have been mine, though. Let the stats speak for themselves. ;)

Well done Oliver. I didnt actually know if you were in the final or not, I didnt actually know if you had won or not and I haven't even read this thread. But its obvious you did win the series. Apterous has killed Countdown.
If I suddenly have a squirming baby on my lap it probably means that I should start paying it some attention and stop wasting my time messing around on a Countdown forum

Congratulations on putting a sour note on probably the best day his life.

Brilliant Oliver! No doubt you deserved to win and I look forward to seeing you in the Champion of Champions, could I end up playing you? Who knows?

Well done!

Btw There wasn't much emphasis that Oliver's the second youngest champion or how young he is. I mean, when Conor won it was all 'oh he's fourteen' but Oliver's only a year older than that!

Wow. Just goes to show what a year's worth of practice does....he's so much better now than those games in 2008 suggest.

I think the CoC have been scrapped but I look forward to the 2010 annual champions match (or whatever the name of it will be called.) against the series 63 winner.

To be fair in the audience Dinos was equally useless at clue recognition.

Also, nicely played Ollie. :D

Very good performance, Oliver. Very worthy winner of the series. Nicki put up a good fight to and deserves a lot of credit for making it to the final.

There definitely needs to be a CoC XIV. The amount of talent there would just be phenomenal. :D

What was the score, good match, etc.?

Had the pissing result ruined on aptochat soon as I had got 4od loaded up. Yes, shouldn't go on apterous, yes, obvious result anyway, but ffs still.

Gutted? Seems a bit strong. You could have looked at the positive and said you'd be pleased whoever won!

Anyway, well done Oliver - consistently great all series. I did think though that Nicki wasn't as strong as in some of the other games and that she could have run him closer based on how well she had been doing - maybe it was final nerves.

Sorry for not saying so earlier, but thanks very much for all the nice comments. I had a brilliant time up there and really enjoyed meeting my fellow finalists (and Kevin!) as well as some of the other forumites. Also congrats to Scott on his well-deserved octochampdom. Thanks to Charlie because without Apterous, I would be nowhere near winning.

PS - Am I the only person to beat two people on the same day they are being shown on telly (Jan 7/12/09 and Nicki 28/04/10)?

I reckon even James will find that question a bit too tricky to answer!

I haven't seen 3 episodes but decided I was safe to read the Grand Final thread as I'd already seen it. Oh well. Might just read the reviews now.
