Thank you, Derek. ;) (and no thank you, Davy.)

Today's match-up could be a critical point in Series 61. Should Tom lose, the quarter-finals will be completed, leaving the last 4 prelims as an intriguing competition to see who will be carryover champion for Series 62.

He's done well so far, just missing out on a good century yesterday. Maybe he has been getting some tips from Kirk :? (Probably not!)

It seems that Jon Gaunt is still dividing opinions among fellow forumites, especially after his talk about food yesterday, but I'm still on the "not so sure" side of things about him. Still, we could always plead to Damian to bring on a journalist who is the direct opposite to Gaunt.

Any suggestions :?:

They're the silent majority that Jon Gaunt speaks on behalf of.

I think Charlie and Damo kind of defended him. (although I admit it doesn't necessarily mean they like him)

I'm surprised the "custardy" Marc didn't get TRIFLES.

Also was upset to not see a repeat of Rachel's STD gag in the previous round! :)

I was surprised "Aquae" was disallowed- make it at scrabble all the time. Likewise "Quean" was missed by Susie- a scrabble favourite!
Pleased to say I got "Origami" and "Realists"

I was pleased with TRIMIX in round 6 and then DC had ORIGAMI. I always find this an impressive spot, including when James Doohan got it in the finals of Series 60.

The Dutch pronunciation of the diphthong AU is more-or-less like Jeff said it. I think a number of Middle English vowels were much more like Dutch, so this could indeed be an accurate throw-back (as Charlie suggests).

I actually meant the Greek τραυμα (wound), wherein αυ is pronounced "ow". Don't know much Dutch as such.

Slightly hard to make COSSETED with only 1 E in the selection, Eoin.

Alternative to 1st Numbers:

75 - 10 = 65, 65 / 5 = 13, 13 - 7 = 6, 6 x 100 = 600, 600 - 3 = 597

In my experience as many people use the 'trow' as the 'tror'. I use either -it depends, but not sure on what.

Mind you, I always say 'sez' for 'says' :)

Oh okay. I thought you might know how similar certain aspects of the two languages were a few hundred years ago (esp. pronunciation), prior to the vowel shifts (and grammatical changes) that have since occurred in English. [Source: Some Oxford publication or other (I can't remember which - probably an etymological dictionary).]
