Spoilers for Wednesday, 5th of March

Post by Martin Gardner »

PAYOUT is in my NODE, which beats POUTY
If you cut a gandiseeg in half, do you get two gandiseegs or two halves of a gandiseeg?

Did DC mention SOLENOID in round 8?

Carol's way to the 925 in round 5 was nice, but I had a nicer one, I think:

(7 x 6) + 8 = 50
5 x 4 = 20
50 x 20 = 1000
1000 - 75 = 925

You could even do (8 x 7) - 6 for the fifty if you were feeling a bit saucy.

PAYOUT is fine (I got that!), also CAUDEX (solver-assisted) in round 7.

I'd say yeah to TREASONS. Not in the usual sense of betraying one's country, but in the more general sense of betraying anyone - petty treasons, and all that.

Yeah, you're right. It doesn't specifically say [count noun] for that definition, but I seem to remember the contestant notes (or something) saying about how mass nouns which are "the action of" can be pluralized.

I'm a little happier adding it to my game's dictionary now :D

You didn't have it in before this? We might need to merge again...I promise it'll be a painless* operation, and you can ignore any of the dodgy mass nouns that I let through.

No, I didn't have it in. I'm fairly confident the only differences in our dictionaries are due to mass nouns (of which this is one) so I'm happy to pick up the odd straggler like this. I have already been through and screened them all manually once after all....

Actually I got SIDELONG as well, was that a DC-beater?

Just offer SENATORS. It's a bit like offering MANTICORE when CREMATION is there.

Yeah, I did :D
I'd have been pretty narked for my opponent to then offer TREASONS though. Well, I wouldn't, because I've accepted that it should be allowed, but there are probably other instances where you've bothered to learn an alternative anagram to a dodgy mass noun plural, and it would be irritating to have your opponent pick up the points with the mass noun. MAGENTAS/MAGNATES would be a good example, I still don't see why MAGENTAS is allowed.
