Post by James Robinson »

Dear oh dear...., SQUINTER instead of SQUINTIER costing Gemma the game there....

DAIGOUS (nice to remember that one now!!) in R1 and HALIDES in R10.

1st Numbers Alt.: (5 x 100) + (6 x 50) - 3 = 797
3rd Numbers Alt.: ((75 + 25 - 4) x (7 + 1)) - 7 = 761

I was surprised to hear BOWLINE pronounced /ˈbaʊlaɪn/ by both Gemma and Susie. Apparently it does derive from a ship's bow, but the actual pronunciation given in Lexico is /ˈbəʊlɪn/. Wikipedia gives either this or /ˈbəʊlaɪn/, which is how I've always thought it was pronounced. I'd always assumed it has some etymological connection with the bow that you tie.

If you look at how a Bowline is tied there is no way you would relate it to your neckware!

As a onetime regular user of the knot I always pronounced it bolin.
