Fab work Elliott! Would also add that the point differences between the past 2 games have made the opposition look awful, when they have not. They were both taking the game in good spirits though....

His ability to find the most obscure 9-letter words is phenomenal.

Crikey blimey! I'm going to let someone else do the recap today -- I am not worthy!

Phenomenal job by Elliott, and major commiserations to both his opponent and Zarte!

May as well skip the 1000 club altogether and go for 1100.

I hope Elliott's future opponents are all cunts, no half decent person deserves what's coming to them.

Thanks for all the kind messages guys :)
Was an honour to get it! John was lovely too - you can see us having a laugh in the credits after, great personality.

Well, I guess most people felt sorry for John, as I did - until he picked 3 large in the penultimate round.

What was he playing at?

OK, I appreciate he almost certainly didn't know the record was in reach, but it must have been obvious that Elliot was on for a fantastic score. Why potentially make it more difficult when you've already been soundly beaten (unless there's been some kind of bad feeling, which there patently hadn't)?

I was so relieved to see that target; with 2 ones in that selection there must be a fair few that are impossible, and a load that would be very difficult for even someone as good as Elliot to solve in the studio in 30 seconds.

Anyway, another brilliant show by the young man from Oldham who sounds as though he has a permanent heavy cold. Could he break his own record in the next few days? I would not bet against it given a reasonable run of the letters.

And will Zarte ever be able to face tiramisu again?

I don't think the challenger should be made to feel that once the game is out of their reach, their only purpose in the studio is to help facilitate the champion's record attempt. He probably just wanted to pick a quirky selection for what he knew would be his last numbers pick.

Of course Elliott solved it anyway - record-breakingly good players don't get that way by suddenly crumbling at the prospect of a 3 large - and congratulations to him.

hahahahaha... 152!!! Crazy shit!

Very well played. Powerful stuff.
Delighted there's a new game record.
How long will this one last...
Days?* Months? Years?!

.

*On current form, you couldn't completely rule that out.

Agreed - and conversely, if it became known that deliberate facilitation had taken place, that would open a can-of-worms-like debate about whether it should really count as a record. It was a relief when that numbers game turned out to be fairly straightforward, though, especially when the selection hadn't seemed the most promising.

I was happy to have got INFRACTED after missing NODALIZES, but ANIMATEUR might as well have been on another planet.

According to the wiki, John was a former Octochamp, so he's enjoyed his success in the past. He probably didn't need two teapots! No shame in losing to Elliott - and depending on perspective, an honour to be part of a record breaking game. His score wasn't unrespectable. I liked the fact he went for something interesting on his final selection, but also glad it didn't present a problem for Elliott!

Isn't 3 large the median selection for difficulty? It's not as if he went for 6 small.

I kind of was a little mad at him at the time, but I genuinely don't imagine that he knew about the record or even considered facilitating a huge score. It was the last pick he was ever going to have on TV, so he wanted to go out with a bang. Same as if he'd stolen the conundrum - it's only a worthy record if your opponent plays to the best of their ability and doesn't "help" you.

I'd probably have preferred 6 small, in fairness as I'm more likely to solve a 6 small than a 3 large :p

Kirk got a 130, but that was the old 15 round format.

Dan McColm's 123 remains the only perfect game in the new format as far as I know.

I wondered if he meant the highest possible maximum. According to the wiki, the old format had a highest max of 173, and the record for the new format is 175.

And a 9-rounder had a max of 106.

On the wiki: "Furthermore, his score was the highest ever achieved by just spotting three nine-letter words."

Surely this is redundant unless it also applies to Apterous?

(If I was on any other site, I'd apologise for my pedantry, but it hardly seems necessary here!)
