Martin won that one fairly predictably, though Bob put up a good fight. The second quarter final of the lot, and already we're into the octochamp vs octochamp games.

New aptoforumite and general madlad Mike Daysley is #2 seed, and he'll be taking on vaguely well known screenwriter Adam Rolston in #8.

Some stats: (do let me know if there's anything I should include)

Mike Daysley:
Wins: 8 (everyone left in has 8 wins so probably not much point this being here now)
Points: 786 (98.25 per game)
Maxes: 61/120 (51%) (30/80 (38%) letters, 28/32 (88%) numbers, 3/8 (38%) conundrums)
Highest Score: 110 (game 1)
Lowest Score: 79 (game 7)
9s Achieved: 1/4

Adam Rolston:

Wins: 8
Points: 650 (81.25 per game)
Maxes: 36/120 (30%) (20/80 (25%) letters, 13/32 (41%) numbers, 3/8 (38%) conundrums)
Highest Score: 99 (game 5)
Lowest Score: 68 (game 6)
9s Achieved: 0/7

PATIENT as an equaller in Round 1, surely? Can't believe the studio missed that.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Mike Daysley here on the Forum yesterday commenting about my QF1 review and I bet he's waiting for this so here goes... (Sorry for that nickname though, I couldn't really think of anything else...)

Letters: Well done to both for spotting GAIETY in R8. In addition, other good spots were Mike's DOWAGERS and Adam's TECHNO. (I did have OVALNESS in R7 but chickened out and declared REASONS instead :( )

Numbers: Alas, everything came apart for Adam after that gamble in R6. He probably got the idea from Bob yesterday and took a bet today on whether it would work against Mike since the latter had never played a six small Numbers game until now. Then again, given Adam's performance on the six small in the Preliminary, I figured out this would flop and unfortunately it did. :( Nerves probably got the better of him as evident in R9 and R14 whereby they were of easy standard for the Finals.

Conundrum: Again, like yesterday, was rooting for either one to get it based on the records. However, as I quote from our Series 72 Finalist Tracey Mills from the daily chat, this was "way too easy for a Final". Indeed, I thought the first TTT, MELATONIN, should have been the Conundrum instead. Let's hope for more difficult ones next week.

I predicted Mike would win comfortably by about 40 points but the first-third today made me wonder if my prediction would hold. Ultimately, it mostly did hold true as the margin was 47 points. Adam sure had his 15 minutes of fame (Well, maybe a lot more than that) on the show and I wish him all the best in his job. One day, perhaps he'll be the recipient of an Oscar, Emmy, Tony you name them. :)

Five more episodes, one final week of Normal Countdown in 2018 but with a borrowed guest from 8/10 Catsdown, Phil Jupitus. Come Monday, QF3, the "3L" masters face of each other. "Almost certainly would qualify for University Challenge" Andrew Jackson vs "Guy who probably started the 3 Large craze in the later part of S79" Alan Duval, let's see if changing combinations in the Numbers Ronuds will work or not if that even happens...

Progress:
QF1 (13 December): Martin May (#1) vs Bob Lunt (#9) (115 - 86)
QF2 (14 December): Mike Daysley (#2) vs Adam Rolston (#8) (104 - 58)
QF3 (17 December): Andrew Jackson (#3) vs Alan Duval (#7)
QF4 (18 December): Dave Ashton (#5) vs Tony Manwani (#6)
SF1 (19 December): Martin May (QF1 Winner) vs (QF4 Winner)
SF2 (20 December): Mike Daysley (QF2 Winner) vs (QF3 Winner)
GF (21 December): (SF1 Winner) vs (SF2 Winner)

Or you could garnish DC's FETA to make FETATION.

Well played both mike and Adam and I'm still kicking myself from not having my 9 routeness in. Although I don't think I showed it too much in the daily chat. Well I hope I didn't.

Thank you for the kind words and I honestly was only joking about the nickname, was very nervous on the day (didn't want to go out and miss the final recording day) and I've had a couple of friends asking why I look so serious or if I wasn't allowed to smile 😀
Adam was a great bloke and Dan in DC was too I was lucky with all of the guests while I was on

Well played today Mike, solid stuff throughout. Some nice words declared too, as Ryan stated. Was nice to see Adam back in the finals- there were a couple of the numbers I expected him to get, but he played well nevertheless. Monday will see a battle of 2 specialists in their respective areas, Andrew with the numbers, Alan with the letters, so will be interesting to see which one triumphs in the end.....

Rachel clearly hadn't spotted Mike's R14 solution - her voice suggested she thought he was going wrong.

Weird that in the first 2 quarter-finals that they put the series winner's trophy in front of Nick....
