Spoilers for Tuesday 4th November

Post by Martin Bishop »

Is it egotistical to start the spoiler thread for my own episode?

Post any beaters here. If you can.

1st numbers game:

((25 - 5) x 5 x 6) - (7 x 3) = 579.
600 - 21

Also, is MITHRIL a valid word in Game 2, or has only Tolkien heard of it?

I got METREAGE as a beater in the last letters - it pays to pay attention to the Teatime Teasers.

Also it was interesting what Susie said about HAULERS - an American word rather than spelling. In my NODE (presumably the same in the ODE-R2D2) it has it as a North American as opposed to US word. Does this imply that Susie would disallow not only US but also North American spellings?

I think the recent "Teatime Teaser" was LITREAGE but I get your point since it led me to METREAGE as well. :) There was also SOCIETAL in another round. I had a bit of a mare today on the letters, only getting them outside the time. I think that's the first time I have failed to get the three inside the time had 981 on the last one.

If it's an American word that's come over here and is used sufficiently then it is valid, if it's a US spelling of a pre-existing English word then it isn't ... I think.

I know, but it's the difference between North American and US that I was wondering about.

The most competitive game I've seen on the show for a while - well done to both players.

I managed to get both the first 2 numbers just after the time so will leave the glory of posting it to those who managed them in the time. For the last numbers I was pleased to get 985 (2 over the target) within the time:
9*5+2=47;
47*7*3=987;
987-2=985

I had two DC beaters today: SOCIETAL in round 6 and METREAGE in round 13.

I was two away on the last numbers (best you can get apparently) with the rather straight forward 981 solution: (5x3x7+2+2)x9. You got the second numbers spot on, Nick? My solver says it's impossible. I got the first one as Carol was speaking so too late to post on here - there's no joy in finding them late.

A quality game today, well played Martin. I thought I'd heard that name before! I reckon we could be seeing you for some time but let's see...

Edit: Credit Corner goes to DC today with their marvellous spot of MONOFIL.

Doh, it turns out I didn't have the second numbers after all: I used two 5s & one 3 (rather than the two 3s & one 5 that was in the selection).

I think it's a good idea so we don't say, "wow, that guy was a complete twat" before we realise there's a chance you'll be reading it.

That said, that Bishop guy today was a complete twat.

Did I see EXHALES as a winner in one round?
If I suddenly have a squirming baby on my lap it probably means that I should start paying it some attention and stop wasting my time messing around on a Countdown forum

No. Well, you might have done, I can't vouch for your vision, but it wasn't there.

Excellent debut Martin! Enjoyed the 6 small games too as we don't see them that often. A late contender for the series crown methinks....

Great trick from Paul Z as well (the first one) - love stuff like that, where it's all done right under your nose. I neither know nor care how it was done, I'm more than happy just to be misdirected and amazed by it :)

Congrats Martin. Will actually be able to watch your 2nd show, and if you make it that far I will be recapping your 6th appearance :)

Congratulations, Martin! :)
I have to say, unfortunately, playing along at home watching a recording this morning, that both you and Andy beat my score hugely. This, thankfully, is rare for me.
Andy was also a great contestant, and you did brilliantly to win. Hope you do well in subsequent games. 8-)
