As we wrap up this week, Bobby Banerjee has racked himself up four wins, and is going to try to go for the sweep of the week and tie himself with Rod Chatfield for wins. Can he do it?

Managing your erection is hard, apparently.

Also, I can understand the studio pressure can be tough, I guess what I don't understand is if the girl didn't have anything, she could have at least declared 500 and perhaps just hoped Bobby made a mistake. Was she just that nervous maybe?

Inverdale doing a great job to boost the contestants confidence by letting them know Susie got the 9 in a second.

I hope after the break we start calling them consonants again.

:D

(4 x 2 + 3) x 50 - (4 + 1) on the R9 numbers or wherever we're up to.

Also, how does someone who either can't spell trio, or thinks it's 5 letters long, get on to the show? Hmmm...

The most agonising part of this excruciating viewing experience is that with the third 9 just having come up, if the contestants were actually competent they could have had an enormous score.

Dunno but 9s distort it. He's not the greatest player ever but he's the same standard as most non-apterite champions and certainly shouldn't be lumped in with the challenger.

I think there's only been one previous game in the new format that had as many as 3 nines. Was it 4 today?

I felt like an idiot watching the last finals. One week into this new series and I feel like a fucking genius.

Been speaking to Dan on facebook and he's pretty confident it was 161 points possible, so I'd imagine a lot of players on here would have broken the record - wouldn't even need the trickier of the four nines.

Not gonna criticise the contestants, but yeah, it would have been really nice if that game had fallen to a top player - would be cool to see a new outright record.

For what it's worth, I make this the 178th game of the new format. Until today's game the top max scores were 154, 147 and 147.

It depends on what you mean by an "enormous" score but if you mean record breaking territory or close to it, then very few contestants would be capable of getting close, even with four nines available. I think we should go easy with criticism of contestants, at the end of the day it's just a fun game. You've also got to remember that most contestants haven't dedicated months and years of their lives towards Countdown, unlike a lot of us.

PEYOTE in round 10. A final O in the last letters round would have given a fifth nine: SONNETEER.

Personally thought Helen was nice and Danny was good fun the other day too. Two games I've enjoyed watching, I'd rather be watching people like that than people who'd do a bit better, still lose but be instantly forgettable. I actually felt really sorry for Helen when the target was 495 and there was the 5 and 100 and she said she wasn't even close. Does make me hopeful for my own application though!

Hope Bobby makes the finals too, comes across as a bright and friendly bloke. Wasn't at the top of his game today and his numbers will stop him being a series champion contender (unless he works on them) but he pulls off good spots quite regularly, he just doesn't know the words that you really need Apterous to learn.

I guess this series of events along with a couple of other past posts perhaps leads to certain questions.

To what point should talking about contestants go? What's too far? What makes rational sense to say and what doesn't? I'll leave the floor open, but I guess I'll explain my thought process with my comment. I had made a comment that I didn't understand that Helen didn't get at least 500 with a 100 and a 5. What my thought was in that is; one, I genuinely didn't understand what part of the nerves took over or something like that. And two, I had only brought up a point about her performance in one round, nothing about herself, her personality, etc., which I feel is sort of the point of these threads, to talk about Countdown as it's happening. So I felt what I said wasn't so bad. But, I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time and won't be the last. Which is also why I'm sort of encouraging this sort of discussion.

Happened plenty of times, mainly with the low scoring winners, like 2 of Ben Nicholson's shows in Series 66.

Quite happy to get all 4 9's, even if it took me nearly all the 30 to get NOMINATES. :P

FOOTER/FOOTIE in round 8.

Well, yeah, this isn't the nicest thread ever, but it's hardly surprising. (...I'm not sure how calling others pathetic or c---s really helps matters, but here we are...)

I see it like this. You wouldn't watch a football match and see the referee disallow a goal because he thought it was offside but he couldn't really remember the ruling on it at the time. You wouldn't watch the Weakest Link and see someone try to vote off Anne Robinson. Kirk wouldn't turn round to Phil Taylor and say "mate, stop throwing, I can't remember what 60 + 57 + 20 is". There's a thing called quality control.

Countdown generally do a bloody good job of this (auditions, thorough background checks, etc) and they also prepare the contestants very well for their appearances on the show (clear, unambiguous guidelines & rules handbook etc).

Whatever the reason, today was definitely an anomaly, which is unfortunate. But we ought to move on. More contestants like Bobby next week please!

I entirely agree with Andy. Ever since I watched Countdown, nearly all of the contestants were of good standard. But today was a bit of a let down regarding Helen. She had some good rounds but in a few, e.g. declaring EGYPT when the rules clearly stated that capitalised words, countries and suchlike are not allowed, I was disappointed. It was probably down to nerves, but it might not have been, we'll never know. Regarding Danny a couple of days ago, it was different. He knew he was poor but he made a good effort and when he knew he was going to lose, he may as well enjoy the rest of the show and become a bit of a Countdown personality and be adored by the viewers, and it really made the game more entertaining.

Like Andy said, today was a one-off, and hopefully, we can all move on from this without any more falling out.

We are judging her on ONE GAME. The best of any discipline have an off day sometimes - unfortunately, it may be the day that matters most. I'm not suggesting she is usually of Conor's standard, or even of the standard of her opponent, but who are we to start calling her "incompetent" or a "joke contestant" and questioning the Team's "quality control" because she was poor on the day? Some people miss all 4 9s available in the letters rounds in their audition because they're nervous or the maxes are difficult, but are totally fine on the show (cough cough); some people do fine in their auditions but badly on the show - especially when their opponent has x number of wins and they're mindful of the fact they are being filmed for national TV. Just because we're a bunch of anagramming robots doesn't mean everyone else is :)

The stuff about the contestants having the temerity to 'waste' a huge max is pretty churlish too. It's hardly like they did it on purpose to spite you. Let's not forget that there are at least 4 people in this thread who've 'wasted' their own opportunities to break that record...

How was the contestant to know Egypt wouldn't have given its (decapitalised) name to an item or action of some description? Worth a punt. If she'd tried it with Japan, Morocco or Panama (assuming the letters were in the selection), it would've paid off.

Why is Egypt so surprising? If you've got nothing else it's not a bad guess. You can have japan, china, mali, morocco, brazil, chile, chad, guinea, panama, turkey and probably more.

That was quite a good spot. I could only find APOGEE from those letters....

You absolute shaft. I had to ask someone else for a third because I could only think of 2!
