Best post you've ever made Corby.
I found this link, which seems to confirm it.

If it's true, I give it a year.

You give what a year?

Please explain.

It was my guess at how long Jeff would keep the job for, before he packed it in, if he was the new host.

Actually no, because no matter who it was, I would've come up with a guess of how long they would last.

Nothing, but then thats what a guess is (to predict (a result or an event) without sufficient information.)

Bizarre.

In that case I will guess that if he does get the job his first series will feature a retired jeweller called Don who loses in the quarter final.

But JS has been at Sky for about 16 years and he helms 6 hours of live TV every week which would seem to speak to his loyalty and stamina. He should have more staying power than Des L.

Countdown hosts these days are like Doctor Whos - they just don't seem to stay in the job as long as they used to.

Has anyone suggested John Inverdale as new host?

Susie aside, hes the best person whos ever been on Countdown by a mile.
If I suddenly have a squirming baby on my lap it probably means that I should start paying it some attention and stop wasting my time messing around on a Countdown forum

I agree, he was very good. I think Jeff Stelling is being touted again as the media favourite so that probably means he has been definitely ruled out.

So, was it because that he was also the media favourite too, that Alexander Armstrong, turned it down, or is he actually doing it now?

EDIT: Ignore this, as I am certain that I have misread David's post

There is a theory that the Jeff Stelling story has been completely cooked up by the Murdoch empire to gain some publicity for Sky Sports.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Vine was in Leeds the other day. I was half-joking when I suggested him before, but they do seem desperate enough.

Hahah - Jennifer, i don't know who you are, but you are very funny.

Murdoch needs to drum up publicity for Sky Sports? Viewed by tens of millions across the whole of Europe every Saturday / Sunday?

Get real please.

"Need" doesn't come into it. They still like a bit of free publicity, they have the means to get some, and they're somewhat notorious for, er, "cross-promotion" of this type.

Admittedly, the theory could be wrong. Maybe the story hasn't been made up by the Murdoch press and then copied by all the other media outlets. But then to prove it wrong, you'd have to admit that Jeff Stelling is lined up to be the next host. Go on then.

I'd never heard of this Jeff Stelling chap, so if he has been chosen I hope it's because he would make a good host rather than because he's a recognisable face - well I hope that regardless of who does it.

Damn .... you all stole my thunder by suggesting John Inverdale, who's been brilliant this week.
He looks like he actually watches and plays along too.
His quote on friday of, "those letters look like there must be a seven or an eight in there" was exactly the sort of hing you'd want to hear froma host.
I bet he even knows all about leotards, pronate and tangelo!
I hate that Des still looks baffled at every answer to the tea-time teaser.

Stelling would be great too, as would Armstrong.
Interestingly, why are old men always touted as the new host? When Whiteley started he was just 38. Armstrong is the only one in that age bracket to have ever been considered.

That we know of, Rob. Actually, come to think of it, Rory Bremner isn't that old, either.

Even if you cannot tell us the names of the new presenters, surely you can tell us the date/time when an announcement will be made. That will stop me checkng all entertainment pages on the internet and teletext every hour fruitlessly.............
