What was your first 9?

Post by Eoin Monaghan »

Anyone who watches Countdown must remember the first time they got a 9, what was yours?

Mine was SHARPENED when I was (appropriately) 9 years old.

I think mine was Round 1 of this game, which is a pretty easy place to start.

I don't remember, but I do remember getting a conundrum ALUMINIUM sometime in the early to mid 80s. Back then, it was extremely rare for me to get a conundrum.

On checking with the wiki, this must have been Episode 161!

I have no idea when I first spotted a 9 while watching Countdown. I remember in primary school our teacher would play Countdown with us and I beat the Asian kid by spotting CREAMIEST. First one on Apterous I think was CABRIOLES.

I think it was CAPTIONED. If so, it must have been this game.

Edit: and my first on apterous was REDACTION.

That's scary because I was going to post this. It wasn't necessarily my first nine, but I specifically remember getting a nine in this episode, and it must have been DECANTING.

Nope; must have been when I was in primary school though as that was when I watched it daily and I would get a 9 every now and again (maybe 2 or 3 a series; really can't remember though). I vaguely remember beating Dictionary Corner with an 8 or 9 once in primary school and checking the dictionary to make sure as I could hardly believe it.

C2: SEATING (7)

Another niner for Adam and yet another century. Well done, that man."

It was at some point last summer when my mum had people over to play Mahjong, which means it was probably a Monday, but I have no idea what it was or who was playing -this was before I started paying attention to/fancying the contestants. It was probably an '-ing' word, though, because I'm a simpleton like that and I don't see the clever 9s.

Mind you, seeing as everyone else seems to have started out playing really young, I'm going to blame my simpleton-ness on the fact that I only started watching the show last year. As in, I watched it when I was 7 a few times and thought I was an absolute genius for managing a 5, but that's it. (Though getting a 5 was still better than my uni housemates last year, who used to be proud of their 4s.)

Can't remember my first 9 but I vaguely remember getting SHITFACED sometime in the the eighties.
BTW i would have thought getting a 9 that DC missed would be far more memorable.

Can't remember my first ever as it was about 1986 when I started watching but first televised one was FACULTIES in my 3rd heat game against Angus McGregor. Saw FISTULA first, then pondered FISTULAE and then saw the 9 on about 15 seconds and then hoped and prayed Angus wouldn't see it (which he didn't).

Turns out my first 9 on apterous was MONITORED. I got CABRIOLES the next day. Landmarks are cool. Well done Charlie.

My first was DEPARTING sometime in Series 63.

IDONTCARE would be an awesome conundrum - AFAIK it's never been used though.
I'm not dead yet. In a rut right now because of stress from work. I'll be back later in S89. I also plan to bring back the Mastergram - if I can find a way to run a timer or clock through pure MediaWiki without having to upload to Vimeo every time.
