Does that mean the answer's "no"? :(

I am so sick of that cop-out.

hi folks im a new member with two questions:
1, Is there anyway of appearing as a contestant on the show without having to download the application form.
2, I have watched countdown for close to ten years and i'm still not sure of the maximum number of consonants or vowels that can be selected in one round.

Hi Fidelis and welcome to the forum :)

In answer to your questions
1) you can email or write to ITV asking them to send you an application form
2) a contestant must pick at least 3 vowels and 4 consonants in each round

This isn't a question.
Dinos Sfyris wrote: 2) a contestant must pick at least 3 vowels and 4 consonants in each round
This doesn't answer the question. He asked for the maximums, not the minimums.

Welcome, Fidelis.

Well, the previous three posts quite accurately represent the range of people and posts you'll get here, from pedantry through helpfulness to blind optimism. :D

Hi, I'm Craig Chittenden, I'm 21 and have been a fan of Countdown for a very long time. Have just come back from filming and had an amazing time. My game will be on Monday 8th Feb (and then anymore if I win but I'm sure you all worked that out already) but I'm really not looking forward to seeing myself on telly. Thanks for letting me on here without my surname Charlie, I didn't realise you needed your whole name, I thought by real name it just meant no names such as 'godofwar' or whatever

Hi Craig and welcome to the forum :)
We'll look forward to seeing your game - don't tell us how you got on but I hope you did well! If you like playing you could try Apterous - you can play people live; it's fun.

Hope this is the first of many posts :D

Welcome, and sorry for the delay in approving your account. We're being absolutely bombarded with spammer accounts lately, two of which have managed to get through (very convincing forename and surname) so we're having to filter people very strictly to stem the tide.

Hi Lesley,

Don't worry, I'll be quiet about my games. I signed up to apterous today as well thanks. I want to play straight away, shame I have to go to college soon. I might just throw away my social life and replace it with this.

Wow, if you follow the trail in the comments it's actually recorded as early back as 2004, so it's possible that it was in usage even earlier than that. It hasn't caught on that well whereas 'lol' is still in widespread usage.

Now, back to the game, and it's the challenger's first pick of the numbers...

Since the very first show in 1982

I play against the TV every day on skyplus, first thing i do after work

I'd say I win 75% in a year, never beat Mr Bevins or Mr Carson, but I did beat Mr Davies 1 time out of 11

I've just made Apterous sound like Reservoir Dogs, how apt!!

You're a good man, Joe!

I've still enjoyed Countdown even though it's hit puberty, by all means.

But is Countdown a 21st century television show? No. That's what will keep us watching!

I'll try to remember your advice in future.

Pretty soon after my first post my computer was damaged beyond repair. It has only been now after 6 or so months of saving that I have managed to buy a new one.

I returned to the Countdown studios for a second time in September with a couple of friends. I saw three of Jeffery Burgins games when Colin Murray was the guest. My friend took quite a shine to you, Jeffery. :) The best part for me was when Jeff couldn't say a particular tea time teaser as it implied something much ruder than it actually was. The outtake was included on the best bits compilation at the end of series 61. He's a legend.

I am a quarter of the way through my degree now and since I posted that grammatical error, I have got distinctions on both assignments I have handed in towards my degree. My grammar can't be that bad? :?

Basically the point of this post is to say hello again and hopefully my computer won't die this time around.

Hello! You might recognise my name as someone you've clobbered on apterous at some point within the last month or so…I'm an American college student (although, when left to my own devices, I basically spell like a Canadian…^_^), and I watch Countdown on Youtube. (Although there's not much there. What I have seen, though, I like quite a lot. :D )

Hi everyone, I'm Eddie. Some of you may have already played me on Apterous (I love that website!) I'm 21, from a little city called Newry in Northern Ireland, but I'm studying French and Spanish in Stirling. I'm a big fan of Liverpool FC (please don't laugh! :( ) and other things I like include Boards of Canada, poker, pool, most sports, quizzes and going to the pub. :D

Countdown-wise, I haven't been on the show before but I'd like to go on sometime in the next few series, though I'd get so bloody nervous that I would probably embarrass myself pretty badly! Im sure I'll do that anyway with my silly accent and antisocial demeanour!

I'm Helen and I'm from London, and I think Countdown is great. I've only been watching a few years, so I missed the days of Richard Whitely, but from what I've seen on youtube I can see why people loved him so much.

I'd love to be a contestant, but I think I'd want to get a bit better first - from nosing around this place I've seen it's inhabited by quite a lot of names I recognise from the show, maybe they'll rub off on me!

Sorry Helen, hardly your fault that you have encountered a rather puerile sense of humour!

Edit: if you are looking to improve your game rapidly, and haven't already done so, then I'd suggest you visit Charlie Reams's excellent online Countdown interface at apterous.org

Let's see if I can make this quote thing work...

Don't worry David, I don't think I would have got very far in the world if I couldn't handle a bit of 'lads banter'. This apterous.org thing looks quite good, although it seems a bit slow at the moment, but it says something about that on the website so i guess I'll have another try later.

I don't think there is a standard method of announcing one's retirement from this forum - I assume that here is as good a place as any. If this is a matter of supreme indifference to most members, so be it.

I won't be reading Jon Corby's thread of yesterday because I know it will be too painful. Undoubtedly the presence of the OffTopic forum tempted me into saying things which should always have remained unsaid. Part of the problem was having hung around too long, something which I can put right now.

I am proud of the contribution I have made from time to time in offering statistical insights, particularly the "Rachel vs Carol" thread which seemed to hit exactly the right note at the right time. There was more I wanted to do, which probably explains why I did not disappear some time ago, but yesterday's events have certainly helped me to recognise that there are many more important things.

To help keep a proper perspective, I will always be grateful to this forum for the "How autistic are you?" thread, which helped to make sense of many issues and which encouraged me to seek help which I would have benefitted from many years ago. Seven months on progress has been slow, with many promises not being kept by organisations which appear overwhelmed by the demand for their services from people like me, but I believe I'm on the right track.

So - farewell. Be nice to each other.

LOL - so Jon's thread was too painful. For who? The bloke who prides himself on giving 110% to the show that gave him his career, and with that his wife (who i met at YTV) and soon-to-be fifth child, or for the bloke who, along with others, became embroiled in a vortex of bitterness and hate towards people they know nothing about?

You've only fucked off because can't handle your own guilt complex after having been sussed out spreading non-truths about yours truly. You're nothing more than a spineless coward who's legged it when the going got tough.

Take your pathetic 'bowing out' speech and stick it.

Hello My name is Tracey Mills and I appeared as a contestant on series 47, my opponent was Jeremy Slaney that day I lost by 4 points after a 25 point deficit from the first half, I enjoyed time on the show and I would do it again if I was allowed, my interests are surfing the net scrabble music and keep fit. :D
