This one made me smile broadly too when I just read it, and the aftermath was just a little dispiriting

Well if it's any consolation, for some reason I didn't get Derek's pun straight away and I might never have given it a second look if it hadn't been for the "aftermath".

Recalling that a forum members group was set up for all those of us who'd been present at the Series 60 finals (so that we could access a private topic prior to transmission to talk about what went on), it occurred to me that the same had probably been done for the Series 61 finals and nosily wondered who was in it. Looking at the group listings under the membership search, I see that there is indeed a group called "The61ers" - but the membership list looks a bit restricted:
Charlie Reams
Ben Wilson
Howard Somerset
Kirk Bevins
Innis Carson
Chris Davies
Simon Myers
Andrew Hulme
So, besides missing loads of forumers who were in the audience (like Sue, Dez, Andy, Dinos, Rich etc), there are even a couple of notable absentee finalists (Ryan and Jeffrey). What's that all about then?

Ooh-err. I've been added to the group for some reason, despite not being at the finals. I may be able to resist looking at the topics in the "hidden" forum. Or I may hold out for an hour or so before reading them all and then posting what I think are innocuous comments that actually contain idiotic spoilers. You know what I'm like. Anyway, you may want to take my name off the list. Or not.

Thanks, Charlie. You may also want to consider adding: Rich Priest, Lesley Hines and the Hurst brothers. Hopefully that's everyone.

EDIT: having read the posts therein, probably add "number nine seed" (almost posted a spoiler there!) and remove Lesley, as she was only there for the QFs.

Ironically after all this innuendo about the V's, I have just read in this week's edition of my staff magazine that conjoined V's symbolise "the Virgin of Virgins".

". . . one of the visitors commented on the ‘graffiti’ on the door frame.
These are in fact ritual marks made to protect the building and ward off evil spirits. They are found both in relatively modest houses and stately homes as well as in churches and cathedrals (including St Paul’s). They typically occur at building openings: doorways, windows, chimney breasts, and particularly where a wall has been broken through.
The sorts of symbols used have remained the same for centuries. Most common are conjoined V’s (which evoke the protection of the Virgin of Virgins), arrows, houses with a cross on top, circles, daisy wheels and simple heads."

One of my favourite moments of the finals was when Dave Beasant was in dictionary corner, and Jeff asked him to play a game. "I'll start saying popular western holiday festivals and you have to complete the name," Jeff said, grinning.

He started by saying, "Eas-", looking at Dave expectantly, who paused a few moments. "Easter", Dave replied.

"Very good. Now, "Hallo-"." He tilted his head, cocking an ear in Dave Beasant's direction. Dave replied quickly, "Halloween, Jeff".

"Fantastic. One more then..

"Chris-..." Dave? ... He's *pause, as Dave seems to suddenly have disappeared* ... gone."

What? It was a genuinely funny moment in the show. The expression on Jeff's face when he realised he had been talking to an empty seat was priceless - Susie could barely contain her excited grin. It turned out Dave Beasant was under the table making origami shapes out of one of the contestant's papers - classic schoolboy antics. Kirk Bevins and his mates were laughing so hard in the back row of the audience because they thought Dave couldn't work out the answer to the question ('Christmas').

I liked the bit where the conundrum was INDUCTION but no-one buzzed so it went to the audience. Kirk put his hand up but couldn't get it even when someone sitting next to him told him the answer. Jeff then asked "What's INDUCTION?" Susie decided to answer using an illustration and drew Hume.

Yeah, and then all the people who think some idiot who is not good enough to go on the show, can barely play Apterous, and makes "jokes" of questionable value can follow me to my rival Countdown forum.
lol

I wonder at what point this went from being a ludicrous suggestion worthy of rolleyes, into a really-good-idea-that-really-should-be-done...
