The second episode of the final "Lewis" story "Intelligent Design" shown on ITV on Monday 11th February had
Lewis's boss joking with him that when he has retired he will spend all his time "growing carrots and watching Countdown".

RR was on Sunday Brunch on Sunday (as you'd expect) and suggested that contestants were anagramming in the bar afterwards. My only surprise was no mention of numbers being done too :)

On Scott Mills' 'inneundo bingo' they just used a clip of (I think) of Jono's first episode from this series. It was just on now, so presumably on listen again it'll be about 58 minutes in.

Jeff Stelling on The Sarah Millican Television Programme

Jeff Stelling talks about Countdown for a few minutes (4 minutes in), mentioning Jack Hurst's SHITFACE incident. He seems to have slightly misremembered it though!

She certainly wasn't the predominant one. Richard Samson, Mark Nyman and Damian certainly had their fair share, as did some of the other females like Tania Styles and Catherine Clarke in the early 00's and mid to late 90's.

12 mins and 20 secs in to this clip from that tacky ITV comedy from the 90's - The Upper Hand:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9omu2C1BFo

The programme is only worth watching because it's tacky. It's currently being shown on ITV3 lol

The theme tune is so over the top.

So do I, hence why I came across the Countdown reference - because I was watching it. But I like the tack more than anything. It did have a warmth about, along with some humour. But ITV comedies are almost always tacky with shaky sets, over-the-top acting and often outrageous storylines. That's often the reason why they're funny to watch, ironically.

There was a version of Countdown on C4 sketch programme Anna and Katy today. There was an interesting numbers round with a spoilage like selection but a target of 605 I think, but it wasn't up for long enough to make a decent attempt at it. Anyone written it down?

I watched this too – and for what it's worth, I thought it was lousy. Their fake talking heads were particularly embarrassing, and the sort of thing that Charlie Brooker does much, much better,

But the Countdown – or rather "Küntworts" – rounds were interesting, supposedly the German version of Countdown if the continuity announcer before Derek was to be believed. I did notice the scoring system was wrong, as both the higher-scoring and the lower-scoring contestant in the letters round were awarded points.</anorak>

It's available on 4oD, with the first part of the sketch at 5:26 and the second at 12:21.

Letters: T A G B E P P ⦏ I (I'm not sure if the penultimate glyph was a stylised 'O' or a joke about the German language.)

Numbers: 3, 70, 108, 23, 69, 417. Target: 605.

Könundrum: COCKHOUSE

Highlight for their solution: HOUSECOCK

I can get one away quite easily, but can't see how to do it - but I was never any good at spoilage anyway.

An interesting story I found online. Series 47 contestant Paul Burlinson looks set to make another quiz show appearance, but this time as a panellist on Have I Got News For You. http://parwich.org/2013/04/01/have-i-go ... y-for-you/

Does anyone else happen to know the only other contestant to have appeared as a panellist on the show (obviously except for all the people who appeared in the celebrity versions) :?: :geek: :ugeek:

No, it was from quite a while ago actually, both when he was on here and on HIGNFY.

The answer is John Diamond, a journalist who won 2 shows in Series 9. He appeared on HIGNFY in 1991, it's 2nd series, and later married Nigella Lawson, before he died of cancer in 2001.

It's "Nixtape" actually - seems all she had to do was press a few buttons and read out the names of who requested the
track, though I sadly missed watching the video stream where hopefully you could see her dancing. It was from 09:30
to 10:00 if you want to play it back online.

Sandi Toksvig's 1001 Things You Should Know is back soon and she was on the One Show today. The presenters showed pictures that had been sent in by people who had appeared on quiz shows yonks ago. Someone sent a picture of herself (annoyingly I can't remember her name) on Countdown from what appeared to be 1983-85 ish. Richard, Carol and the many surplus-to-requirements women they had then where all in the picture looking garishly eighties. As Sandi pointed out "where do you start with that fashion?". One of the good things about the return of 1001 Things is that (as a number of us know) if a Maths question comes up on the show then a clip of Rachel asking the question appears and a clip of Susie or Nick appear if an English question comes up. So Countdown gets a regular mention on it.

No I just haven't watched Countdown this week......................

I don't watch every single episode, but I do watch most. The credits aren't exactly thrilling, and besides, that doesn't matter, it's about the fact that Countdown from the very old past got a nice mention today.

On The Chase a while ago, but still catching up as ever :P :

Armond Jammot provided the format for which long-running game show :?:

Countdown, Family Fortunes or Mr. & Mrs. :?:

Then Mark "The Beast" Labbett mentions that all 4 Chasers would love to be in Dictionary Corner, and they even suggest having a 2 vs. 2 match. 8-) 8-)

Bradley then suggests doing it nude. :P

Interestingly, having spoken with Paul Sinha on Apterous, there's nothing in their contracts saying that they can't be in Dictionary Corner, but they can't obviously be contestants, although as we all know, Mark was a contestant back in 2000.

Here's one that I've gradually pieced together from memory. As I can find no record of the episode in question anywhere I'd be grateful for any confirmation. It took place as part of the TV version of Simon Mayo's Confessions, a show where members of the public were embarrassed by revelations of their past misdemeanours. IMDb says it ran from 1995 to 1998 but I can't put a precise date on it.

The "victim" was a lady who regularly taped Countdown so that she could watch it with and play it against her friend, who she regularly beat. She'd arranged to go on one of the regular tours of the Countdown studios, which unbeknownst to her was being filmed for the BBC. As she and another visitor were being shown round the set, there was an unexpected appearance from Richard Whiteley, who proceeded to set them the conundrum FRESCOSON. Neither of them got it and the answer was revealed as CONFESSOR - at which point it was revealed that the victim had been secretly watching all the episodes in advance and memorizing the answers!

Does this ring any bells with anyone?

Do you mean Vanessa Feltz :?:

Interesting mention on A Question of Sport, also on Wednesday, when Matt Dawson's team were trying to rearrange some letters to make the name of an England cricketer, and Commonwealth gold medal heptathlete Louise Hazel worked it out, straight away, with Matt suggesting that she go on Countdown, and she even admitted to liking word puzzles. Defo a DC suggestion, if ever there was one. 8-)

The way you've written it, it's zero because multiplication takes precedence over subtraction. Even I can work that out!

Did you mean ((14x14)-14)x14? Or was it all intended as a joke anyway?

Only just seen this thread so I'm a bit late with this, but Nick Hewer was on Backchat recently, a BBC3 chatshow hosted by Jack Whitehall. Lethal Bizzle was a fellow guest and Nick promised to use the word "dench" at the next Countdown recording. Has anyone noticed him using this word on countdown? Would probably be in a show broadcast November-December, if he did it.

Lethal Bizzle was a fellow guest and Nick promised to use the word "dench" at the next Countdown recording. Has anyone noticed him using this word on countdown? Would probably be in a show broadcast November-December, if he did it.

Yes, I came on here to note it but you beat me to it, vested interest and all that. We miss so much by watching the edited version every day :)

Believe me, even that was edited down. This went on for about 10 minutes. Susie finally calmed down and I looked at Brenda (my opponent) and we both collapsed into fits of laughter.

Me and Chris Davies were in the front row, and I was just gone completely. And that coming after the ORGASMS bit as well just made it even more memorable.

I just knew it had to be on there. ;) :) :D  8-) :geek: :ugeek:
