Dictionary Corner Guests for the new series

Post by Brian Whitworth »

Any ideas who we have got coming up?

I'd like to see Giles B return, or Jo Brand! Loved it when she was last on and she was making nonsense words up with her own definitions -- I've seen her live, she's so funny!

apart from that -- here's my dictionary corner fantasy guestlist -- who's yrs??

Why is Jennie Bond on your "fantasy guestlist", given that she's been on umpteen times already? Yeah, let's get her back on so she can tell all the same stories about I'm a Celebrity for the fifth or sixth time.

Kate Humble will be on 16th to 20th Feb. She's the wildlife presenter who does Springwatch with Bill Oddie.
I saw some of the recordings, and she was very good. But then I liked her in the first place!

I like Jo Brand too. Charlie can be a miserable sod sometimes.

I like to see the regular guests as mentioned JB GB etc. but would like some new blood maybe the odd football pundit as has been muted or sportsmen women and possibly some younger generation guests.

Look forward to Kate Humble but please not her accomplice in crime BO.

What a stupendously unfriendly post, on laughably superficial provocation.

You manage to castigate Martin "What Joke?" Gardner for missing the tongue-in-cheekness in one thread, while simultaneously doing the same yourself in another. I guess you fail at irony.

But how on earth was this guy, who doesn't know you, to know you were being anything other than serious? There were no indicators at all. The tone of the "could have been a champion at 11" posts gave ample clues away as to non-seriousness. I wasn't intending to castigate Martin anyway, I was trying to help him out. Although, as so often, intention not clear, leading to multiple levels of misunderstanding...

Edit: Having followed your link, I see what you mean. But unsurprisingly I don't read every single post on this place so hadn't seen that... and I'm guessing from this guy's reaction above that he still wasn't sure of your intention...

Touché. Obviously you caught me napping with that post.

As it is I'm supposed to be working, which clearly means I'm on here every five minutes. Maybe you should employ me, then I'd stay well away and spend all my time writing novels instead - anything to avoid work.

Ok, to put the record straight, Clare was right, to an extent -- at first I thought "ah, maybe it's a bit cliquey and hostile here" --

But then I read the original post in the other forum and I got the joke, so it's ok!

I sometimes think that Henry Kissinger should come out of retirment and arbitrate on some of the threads on this forum.
Ian Hislop would really be a good choice for DC.Also his mate on the opposite team would be OK,Paul Merton.Another person I would like to see is Harry Hill.Of the old guard,Dr.Phil,Ken Bruce and Tom O,Connor are ones I hope to see in DC again.

I'd love to see David Coleman, though he must be in his eighties by now. He would be great fun.

How about John Inverdale, Austin Healy, Henry Blofeld (would love to see him again on Countdown), or even, dare I say it here??? Des Lynam. I think the banter and repartee between Des and Jeff would be fantastic though it may detract a bit from the contestants.

Jeff is a sports commentator so let him shine (more than he does already) by having some sports related guests in DC.

I'm off to watch SF2 now, so don't yet know if you won or not? My fingers are crossed for you and the next post will be either congrats or commizzers...

Jon Gaunt
Martin Lewis (Money expert chap)
Colin Murray
Kaye Adams

Lots more TBC. Hope you approve - but have learnt by now to accept you probably wont!

I agree that Ran the Man would be a great return guest, he was so dry last time, a welcome change. Giles B - I'm with Charlie on this one, he makes my flesh crawl!! Steven Fry would be my ideal guest but understand he has been asked but is too busy, globetrotting or something. Other than that what about previous contestants, those who have been a bit eccentric or maybe won a COC? (Or even both?) :)

Someone I've wanted on the show for a while is Tim Vine. Countdown can never have enough puns.

A lot of people disliked Anne Widdecombe using the show to promote her political agendas, so it might be an idea to feature guests from across the political spectrum. To that end, I suggest John Prescott and Lembit Opik.

Also, is it just me or is this topic displaying weirdly? I'm viewing this in extra-widescreen.

It might not be just you but it certainly isn't me.

It is due to Ben's post above: http://www.c4countdown.co.uk/viewtopic. ... 516#p27765

He's put a maaaaaaaaaassive amount of exclamation marks in a row which can't word wrap to the next line as they're all in a row.
The page should be formatted so that table cell that holds the post has a maximum width - for example, in Firefox I can only see about 30 or so of the exclamation marks whereas if I try and quote Ben's post I can see there's several hundred. I am guessing you're not using Firefox and your browser is having trouble processing the page as it should be displayed.

UPDATE
Just tested in Internet Explorer, saw the super-wide page you refer to. But also noticed I wasn't logged in and so it was displaying that horrible 'new' Windows Media-player like forum style.
Turns out that is the culprit, not the browser you are using. So to view it properly you need to be back on the nice old original forum style.

I see the suggestion of Brian Sewell. He falls under that category of, 'He's knows a lot about his own subject, but little about popular culture'. He may know some amusing stuff on Vincent Van Gogh ? :o

He appeared on 'University Challenge - The Professionals' and it was amusing to hear him say 'Va Va Voom' to the question about the slogan of Renault cars.

What irritated me was his reply to John Humphrys to a passed question on 'Celebrity Mastermind'.
'How on earth did you expect me to know that ?'. Not so much that he didn't know the answer, but the impression that the question itself was beneath him.

I hope encourages those who be to get some more sports commentators / pundits as long as they didn't wear all red in the 70s, Messrs Hansen, Lawrenson and their like.

Comedy-wise, Peter Kay, Dave Spikey, Lenny Henry, Harry Hill, Victoria Wood, French and/or Saunders.

I'd like to see Bill Bailey in DC. He's obviously a fan of the show (or maybe just a fan of mocking it!) as he's referenced it in his shows many times. He could even do a live playout of the theme tune!

Are we suggesting guests here too? If so, here's my dream list!

Tony Slattery- amusing, very intelligent, probably has a way with words, is lovely, charming, I could go on!
Clive Anderson- the tales he could tell! Had a talk show, the Bee Gees poured water on him and walked out, you could make the conundrum a word relating to baldness and remind him of the good old days on Whose Line is it Anyway? when he got picked on every show for it.
Sandi Toksvig- good with words too, and she is very funny.
Eddie Izzard- He's fluent in French, for goodness' sake!

I know most of 'em are comedians/ennes, but they're great. If you can't book them due to schedule issues or anything, I understand and won't be upset :P

Other than that, have people already asked about Richard Stilgoe? I'm assuming that's the name of the man I saw on the Countdown Gotcha video on youtube, the one with the anagrams and limericks? I thought he was very funny. If not, I suggest him! If they have, I apologise for repeating them.

I thought the Bee Gees just walked out, with Clive Anderson's head remaining as dry as his wit.

God, you're easily confused!
It's BB of course.
Others may find Charlie offensive, but he'd be hard pushed to offend me! (I only hope he doesn't try)
Apologies then Ian.
I didn't post at first as I couldn't work out if you meant Charlie or Brian Blessed.
After you and Charlie responded to each other, I thought I was safely assuming you were talking about Charlie.
I wrongly thought you were being rude. As it were, you were simply being wrong, cos Blessed is a legend.
