Former contestants

Post by Anthony Jenkin »

I've noticed that a few contestants have stated that they've appeared on Countdown before. Are there any rules about who can "have another go" and who can't?

If you've been off for 10 years, and didn't make the finals, then go for it. Otherwise, it's up to producers' discretion.
Possibly the first contestant to accelerate with a mic clipped...

The official application form says all reapplications are at producers' discretion, but they're usually very easy-going if it's been ages since your last go so what Zarte's said is basically spot on. It should be noted though that they have issued a blanket ban on second goes in the recent past (around 2010 time iirc) so this policy is subject to change.

I reached the quarter finals in 1996. What do you reckon?

Glen Webb got back on in 2013 after being in the QFs in 1992; thus, logically, I'd think you would have a shot now. The one sticky point is that you were an octochamp on your original appearance, while Webb only won 2 games, and you'd be looking at becoming the first former octochamp to be invited back (I think). But still, with more than 20 years elapsed since then, I'd definitely give it a shot and apply.
I'm not dead yet. In a rut right now because of stress from work. I'll be back later in S89. I also plan to bring back the Mastergram - if I can find a way to run a timer or clock through pure MediaWiki without having to upload to Vimeo every time.

You could get into the quarters with 2 wins? Crazy.

When I wanted to go on again I contacted the production team directly before applying, and they were fine with it. Nine years between my appearances, unfortunately I faced eventual Octochamps on both occasions. I wonder if they'll let me have another go in 2025...

Martin Smith!
I played along with TV during your recent appearance... and lost to both Tom and you.
You were very unlucky to come up against Tom... just as you were unlucky to come up against David O'Donnell the first time.
I imagine they would be sympathetic and allow "the unluckiest person in Countdown history" (i.e. you) have another go soon enough...

Your profile picture looks like the money shot in some robot bukkake.

ffs Mark!
You've been watching too much weird porn...
...but I do see what you're saying (and can't unsee it now! )

I suppose I need to say something clever/filthy about your profile pic as revenge...
...but I can't think of anything other than the obvious - that it's hard to tell from that pic whether you're more of a dick or a geek.
hmmm.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could think up a new word to describe people who are both?

I've been sorting out some old vhs videos recently and found an episode of Countdown, which just happens to be Glen Webb's first game!
Good thing the result wasn't spoiled by me reading your post first, lol.

Yep, will sort something out. Pretty poor sound quality I have to say but watchable.
