University Challenge and Only Connect 2016/17

Post by James Laverty »

These two start again next week with quite a few apterites in the mix.

Giles is on UC representing Warwick, and there is a team of apterites (Phyl, Graeme and Tom) on OC.

Anyone else?
Definitely not Jamie McNeill or Schrodinger's Cat....

OC's facebook page implies Jack Welsby (of series 52) is on tonight.

And so he was.

Not sure either of tonight's teams will be challenging at the sharp end though.

Shocking that RB wasn't the first clue in the "Britain" round too, massive opportunity missed there.

I used to fancy Amy Godel when she was repeatedly on 15-1 (as Ian alludes to above). She would hypnotise me into joining her for saucy shenanigans in her sex dungeon.

Only Connect . The less said about Grahams teams performance in the first three rounds the better....and why did only two of his team perform .
So nearly made a miracle recovery in the final round though.

Surprised no posts about Haemangioma being on the show last week, just catching up! The intro mentioned our Rach as an alumna of Oriel College, Oxford as well. Not quite a quattrocento but 150 is a decent score and nice to see Eoin smiling and enjoying the experience as well :).

Weird question in University Challenge stated "To the nearest factor of 10", where the eventual answer was 80. That's a multiple of 10 and not a factor unless they've changed maths again?

It's the question-setter's fault, undoubtedly, but have you noticed that Paxman almost seems to take a pride in his complete ignorance of maths and science of all types? It's really weird and makes him look like a real tool, especially when he's castigating some astrophysicist on her mispronunciation of the name of some obscure 19th Century poet.

(I'm a little behind this series on Sky+).... noticed that too at the time. I assumed the answer had to be 10, 100, 1000 etc. Which doesn't make sense either, I suppose.

So that was Giles then? I did wonder (I tuned in late so didn't see the introductions and for some reason thought it wasn't; I'm unsure why but I thought he was a bit older). And yes, they did very well indeed, looking forward to their next appearance.

What the Dickens happened there, Eoin? ;) In all seriousness, the opposing team were on fire, credit to them for a top-notch performance. They even got all the bonuses on Northern Ireland, so no complaints there!

Cheers lads! A shame to go out on such a poor performance, but Bristol were on fire against us and as a team lacking Science skills, we really had no chance on any of the Science questions.

The audience had a good laugh whenever Bristol were awarded the Northern Ireland bonuses, and it was a struggle not to want to shout the answers!

RE the quarks; not gonna lie, by this stage I knew we were out and that I hadn't buzzed in yet - as soon as Jeremy mentioned quarks I ran through them in my head (saying up!) - and wanted to hear my name one more time, but knew I couldn't pause to think too much or Bristol's scientists would get there first so plumped for one that seemed logical. Knew as soon as I said it what the right answer was.

Oh well, was a terrific experience and we were outclassed. Was just very glad to have had a chance to take part given Oriel's hiatus from the show for over a decade.

I thought he said "quartz" so I was completely bamboozled. I pronounce it to rhyme with "barks" rather than "forks" so that's probably why.

Quarks rhymes with marks, as they were named for "three quarks for muster Marks" in Joyce's Finnegans wake (which I think alludes to the hoarse cry of a bird) :ugeek:

Apterous 'unlimited' format fans will have been pleased to see MATAMATA and CARACARA included in UC questions last week.

A lot of Only Connect was outrageously difficult again this week. And I thought it was incredibly harsh not to allow human figures on the logos of the NBA, Kappa etc, because they're specifically 'silhouettes of human figures'.

"The transgender girl" isn't really necessary, she has this handy thing that you can use to more easily identify her - it's called a name.

Yes sorry it's Sophie Rudd.
I have trouble remembering names. The irony being that I could only find her name on Google by typing " Transgender girl on University Challenge "

Another good performance from Warwick there but Wolfson were also on good form. Great run Giles and team, well done!

Well done son of Cropper, a real tour de force there.
Rudd had a bit of an off day by her (?) standards

Just caught up on the last two Only Connects. Well done, Verbivores! I thoroughly enjoyed Graeme's disbelieving facepalming in the closing credits of both episodes :)
